Column: Benghazi media curiosity? Really?

Rich Thurlow
Editor

Let us harken back to those glorious days of 2008, when presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were debating who would be better prepared to respond to a crisis when the phone rang at 2 a.m.

It turns out that "C. None of the Above" was the correct answer, with the events of Sept. 11, 2012, providing the final bit of evidence.

And now something funny is happening. But not "ha ha" funny as far as the White House is concerned.

I was home the day of the latest Benghazi hearing, lending an ear to the proceedings while concentrating on the more immediate task of being Best Grandpa Ever for Alex. My bride, kdminer.com blogger Roxanne, was closely monitoring the events, flipping from Fox News to CNN to MSNBC. Fox News, which leaves the other two cable news networks in the ratings dust, was covering the hearings. The other two weren't.

For Fox viewers, the hearings provided little new "news," since that network had been aggressively covering all angles of the Benghazi story from Day 1. I'm familiar enough with MSNBC to know its coverage of Benghazi pretty much began and ended with White House talking points. CNN? I think more people get their news from Jon Stewart.

As we have grown to expect, the Associated Press's coverage was of the "nothing to see here" variety. The AP coverage in Friday's Miner focused on Republicans looking for political gain by trying to make what happened a scandal. This from the same news agency that ran U.S. death tolls in Afghanistan in every story from that country - until Obama took office.

I think readers will have a better idea of what it going on as it regards Benghazi by reading Linda Athens' blogs at kdminer.com (Random Thoughts of an Unabashed America Lover) rather than the fluff thrown out by the AP.

I had pretty much resigned myself to much of the mainstream media repeating the line that this is not news, despite the fact it's beyond dispute that the president and the secretary of state lied to the American people repeatedly in the two weeks after the terrorist attack on Benghazi embassy. This tall tale of a video inciting a deadly riot is pure bull.

Aside from the lies, we also know two Americans did respond and others could have, but that they were ordered to stand down. Why?

And where was the president while all this was going on? Why is that a well-kept secret?

There's more to this seedy story of, at best, incompetent leadership (and possibly, as detailed by Athens in her blog, something far, far worse). The surprise, though, is that the lethargy and Obama worship that has gripped the networks and other major players in the mainstream media, has been replaced by a smidgen of curiosity.

Those news professionals were played for fools and some of them have enough pride left to resent it, to bite back. There's a hint of hostility in questions directed toward White House spokesmen.

I wonder how long that will last.

•••

Kingman and Golden Valley residents have been shaken by tragedies in recent days, accidents of the type that make people stop and think and say a prayer.

It was also an opportunity to act, and that's what so many in our community did Friday in a car wash for the Howell family. Husband/father Tony Howell lost wife Joy and sons Jesse and Justin in a car accident last Sunday in Nevada.

To help with expenses, the Cedar Hills 4-H club organized a car wash that was held at the Stockton Hill Road Taco Bell Friday. Rebekah Russell, who knows the Howell family through 4-H, helped organize the event. From 10 a.m. until just before 6 p.m., Russell said there were always two cars being washed with at least one other in line waiting.

Home Depot donated $100 for car wash supplies, Russell said, while some who went through the wash donated $100 to the family. All told, Russell said the fundraiser netted about $3,000.

This community has a big heart. Don't let detractors tell you otherwise.

The latest on Benghazi. Admin has released only 100 e-mails of 25,000 which they refuse to release even though most aren't classified. 9-11 thru 9-13 are even missing.

We know Susan Rice was in the loop on the revised talking points. That means it is a lie that she just said what she was told on the five Sunday shows.

Two whistleblowers have said they are coming out to say Ambassador Stevens was in Libya in the first place to buy weapons directly from Al Qaeda. With Hillary behind it. Long story.

Of two dozen people at Benghazi on 9-11, NONE has been questioned yet. Obama admin is not being compliant on providing e-mails, witnesses.

Concerning Fast and Furious, Obama used Exec Order and closed any further investigation. The most transparent administration in history. NOT!

Eric Holder may have lied under oath. What a shocker. Now he is in charge of investigating....himself!! I'm sure he will prosecute any wrong doing to the full extent of the law. This administration is a complete joke.

I sure hope that Obama is held to account for Benghazi (I wish he'd be held accountable for being behind some events in Kingman not too long ago, and the flat-earthers here think I'M loony), but this week we are being treated to more of Islam's religion of peace in the streets of Stockholm, Sweden. Watching the videos of Allah's followers burning and looting (I guess they were looking for novelty after establishing themselves as the ubiquitous rapists of young Swedish women and girls), the question occurred to me - "Where are all the hateful mobs of Christ's followers?" I mean, Christians are always being accused of hatefulness, with their opposition to genocide (abortions), oral/ anal/& god-knows-what-else sex blessed in same-sex unions, and even to a President whose idea of immigration "reform" is to grant citizenship to those who broke the nation's laws (the rest of us even accused of breaking the law have our lifetime housing/earning options hopelessly destroyed). Personally, I think Alice's discourse with those strange creatures deep in that rabbit hole make more sense than what passes for logical discourse here many times.

Nice try.....for one, it is the word of an admitted criminal, I suppose you would take that as gospel, not me.

For two....it was only the older brother accused, not charged or convicted or any other thing, not the younger brother.

“Nice try Moore:… the very next day the harrassment of the Tea Party/Patriot/Jewish people began.”

Sadly incorrect as always since no one was harassed – they were investigated as was every other group applying for tax exempt (that means you and I pay) status. And now suddenly you are saying the Jews were targeted along with the Teabaggers? Where do you get that stuff?

”The IRS head had 117 (or thereabouts) visits to the White House. Won't Obama be surprised when he reads that in the newspaper?”

Yes, he will in light of the FACT no such thing ever took place. You gotta stay away from those righties.

“Speaking of scandals. Benghazi? Fifteen or so known and wanted for the murders - O admin hasn't picked them up. WHY?”

Who are these people? Why doesn’t anyone but you know about them? And where is your ire about The Criminal NEVER catching any of the people who attacked a dozen of our embassies and consulates during his Reign of Error?

“Marathon bombings? Two brothers probably killed three Jews on 9-11-2011. Where is that news?”

In the garbage can where it belongs because it – as usual – is not true. BTW, “probably killed” isn’t really anything of substance.

Here's a tidbit. Obama met with head of the IRS - the very next day the harrassment of the Tea Party/Patriot/Jewish people began. (Came out in one of the hearings. Do you watch them? I watched one until 3 AM last night)

The IRS head had 117 (or thereabouts) visits to the White House. Won't Obama be surprised when he reads that in the newspaper?

We already know he would not have known about all those visits because he doesn't know about any of these scandals until he reads about them in the news.

Speaking of scandals. Benghazi? Fifteen or so known and wanted for the murders - O admin hasn't picked them up. WHY?

“Of course you completely ignored my question and went straight to the liberal jab at Fox news.”

No “jab”, simply a statement of fact.

“Where exactly do you get your news if you never watch Fox?”

As I have pointed out previously I read numerous newspapers on-line (as part of my job as a news reporter) and many news magazines> As to my watching habits I watch BBC America, Al Jezeera English, with a sprinkling of MSNBC and CNN, but never FAUX News. Why would anyone pay any attention to a supposed “news” organization that went to court and demanded the right to lie about, make up and distort news stories?

“Seeing how you think your so knowledgeable about the facts, I'm surprised you don't call Rush or any of the good radio stations and spew out your left wing garbage…”

To call any of the Right Wing Shouting Heads only lends credence to their existence and since they are all full of nonsense and hyperbolic blather there is no point in talking to them.

“…or is it just easier to sit at your computer and cowardly call people names?”

I don’t know – you seem to be the one adept at those tactics. I simply tell the truth which – as we all know – drives the righties insane.

“Oh that's right, you never listen to Rush but your the expert on him also....”

I am far from an expert on anything – choosing to do actual research than just spout nonsense. As to the whacked out drug addict – one never has to listen to him because we all know that drug addicts lie – all of the time – about everything.

“You are you one consistenly caught in not telling the truth.”

Untrue, as always

“It has been pointed out to you, something you have ignored like you ignore WMD's found in Iraq after we invaded…”

The term is WMD. I posted the facts a few weeks back that showed the results of the ISG team put together by The Criminal to save his butt and prove there were WMD. After two years the team reported – there were no WMD to speak of in Iraq. They found 53 barrels of outdated material that had been given to Sadam by Ronald the Dim in the early 1990s and nothing else.

“Fox news did NOT go to court and get permission to lie.”

Yes, they did – and here it is again! 28 February 2003 - A Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization (FAUX News). The attorneys for Fox argued the First Amendment gives broadcasters the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on the public airwaves. Fox argued and failed on three separate occasions, in front of three different judges, to have the case tossed out on the grounds there is no hard, fast, and written rule against deliberate distortion (lie) of the news. The attorneys for Fox argued the First Amendment gives broadcasters the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on the public airwaves.

”Any story that makes obama look bad, MSNBC DOES NOT RUN IT.”

Totally untrue.

“Why can't you own up to truth once in awhile.”

I ALWAYS tell the truth.

“An, looks like your prize administration is in another oopsie, lol. Oh, that's right this prize president had no idea what the heck was going on in his own administration,…”

I would lend some credence to your ire except for the fact you never spoke out against The Criminal saying, “I don’t know.” Or his daddy saying, “I don’t know,” or Ronald the Dim saying “I don’t know.”

I suppose in the narrow world of the righties the president should know everything that is going on throughout the entire government. Stupid concept, but it’s theirs and they gonna stick with it.

With that said, the various “scandals” (not actually but righties love that word) do need full investigation and action taken against those guilty of improper deeds.

“… epic fail, Mr president epic fail.”

That would be everything done during the eight year Reign of Error of The Criminal – so when will you be pushing for War Crimes investigations into the little weasel?

You probably can't say as it might make you look silly or do you watch Fox news (are you paying attention to how it is spelled?) and then condemn everything that is said?
I also pay a lot of attention to the ratings and Fox news doubles their closest competitor...so they must be doing something right or there are a whole lot of liberals out there who watch Fox but are to cowardly to call them and tell them where they are wrong.
Seeing how you think your so knowledgeable about the facts, I'm surprised you don't call Rush or any of the good radio stations and spew out your left wing garbage or is it just easier to sit at your computer and cowardly call people names?
Oh that's right, you never listen to Rush but your the expert on him also....how does that happen?

I have now answered this at least three times. For whatever reason, my answer seems to keep getting lost.

You are referring to me voting for JFK? Not sure I have the question right but I indeed did vote for JFK - answered it again on a BLOG.

I had been 18 for some six months. You seem to wrongly think you had to be born in 1937 to have voted in November,1960 which is when the election was. That would make you 23, not 18.

You have now called me a liar repeatedly. I was never a liar even once, distinctly remembering the election, my first, which I was very excited about.

I even remember one uncle who hated the Kennedy's trying to talk me out of voting for JFK. An avid reader, he was right of course, telling me all about Joe Kennedy being a rum runner, etc.

You owe me an apology for calling me a liar. I won't hold my breath since I have NEVER seen you even admit you are wrong. I have frankly never seen you right.

Sad how you never address the evils of obama and his turning us into a banana republic. I'm frankly not interested in responding to you anymore. You are a lost cause in the politics area since you refuse to address the horrors of this administration. Nothing they do bothers you. IRS horrors, Benghazi horrors, etc - Nothing but nothing bothers you. SCARY!!

Why don't you tell the rest of the story? A famous method of keeping Americans from knowing the truth. Tell half the story..

General Carter Ham, head of Africom received the same e-mails for help the White House received. When he immediately had a rapid response unit ready to go and told the Pentagon so, he was told to stand down.

He responded screw it, he was sending the group anyway. They were desperate. Within moments, he was apprehended and was relieved of his command.

Now General Rodriguez will take Ham's place as head of Africom. No way was the obama admin going to let a rescue effort take place.

NOONE except left wing news sources have said Stephens refused extra security not once but twice. Those working WITH Stephens say he was desperate for help. But he was advised it would go well with him if he DID NOT ask for more. So much for us sending our people into harms way and then deserting them.

Stars and Stripes reports Rear Adm Chas M Gaouette will be sent back to the USS John C Stennis' home port at Bremerton in what is called temporary duty. His replacement will be Rear Adm Troy Shoemaker - unusual to replace a carrier strike group commander during deployment...and in the Middle East.

Must have done something the Obama admin didn't approve of, like wanting to help those left stranded?

Don't we grow weary of this administration destroying people's lives and careers?

I am reminded of the evening in October 1973 at 10:15 P.M. when our commanding officer at a strategic U.S. military base near Frankfurt told us that "we may be in Israel by morning" (this depended upon unfolding events in Moscow and the Sinai). Thirty years ago, we were preparing to move enough forces to counter 115,000 Soviet troops marshaled at Moscow's Sheremetev airfield intent upon seizing the Suez Canal - in a matter of hours. So - Obama supporters here - tell me why this President could not, over a span of a reported 8 hours of fierce fighting at our diplomatic mission in Benghazi - he could not or would not muster enough forces to deal with a few hundred gangsters. (Gee, maybe I was prescient after all in writing a controversial letter to Obama a few years ago, for which I was subjected to a whole slew of that unacknowledged/surreptitious/extra-judicial government crime in Kingman). I know the Government wants us all reduced to sterilised effete compliant little citizens - and Hollywood will monitor the process, if you only knew - but I'm still here anyway.

You are repeating a lie over and over. That will never make it the truth, even in left wing lala land.

A deficiency in funds was NOT the reason no more security was received in Beghazi. For the third or so time, the second down in that department, Charlene Lamb testified under oath that they felt no more security was needed.

Incidentally, it has also come out by Utah's Chavettz the non funding you blame on Republicans wasn't funding that would have been used at Benghazi anyway.

So you are wrong twice here. And you are calling Charlene Lamb a liar under oath.

I have a TOTALLY different story on General Ham and I will tell it soon. You are aware, he was relieved of his command for differing with the Administration?

Also, we KNOW why they didn't want more security at Benghazi. They were gunrunning to leftist Syrian rebels (some of them cannibals - more on that later) and Obama also wanted the death of UBL on his watch to mean the end of Al Qaeda. It not only did not mean that, Al Qaeda is worldwide and very definitely has a presence in our own country. But you know that already.

To add security would have meant he was wrong. They wanted Libyan's who happened to be terrorists themselves, many of them, to serve as security.

I'm kind of curious to where these liberals who write in get their news since they tell the conservatives what liars they are.
I make it a point every time I turn on the TV to see who is bring us up to date on what is happening in Washington and always wind up watching Fox News, as the other channels are covering "dancing with the Stars" or some stupid thing that means absolutely nothing.
I know that Dane gets her information from a Muslim rag but where do the others come up with all their so called truths....It sure isn't from TV.
Reporters from Fox news go around asking people questions about what's happening in the world and most people haven't a clue especially college students...it is no wonder that Obummer got re-elected as most people think of him as our first Black president not some thug from Chicago who he really is.
I would like to see the Daily miner start reporting more about what's going on in the world to maybe help educate these people who I believe make things up and from reading letters from our know it all's we all know who they are.

Poor righties – those gosh-darned facts just keep popping up.

In the month before attackers stormed U.S. facilities in Benghazi and killed four Americans, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens twice turned down offers of security assistance by the senior U.S. military official in the region in a report from two government officials.

Army Gen. Carter Ham, then head of the U.S. Africa Command, phoned Stevens on 16 August 2011 and asked if the embassy needed a special security team from the U.S. military. Stevens told Ham it did not.

Weeks later, Stevens traveled to Germany for a meeting with Ham who again offered additional military assets, and Stevens again said no, the two officials said.

Stevens’ deputy, Gregory Hicks, for some curious reason, was not asked about the offer of additional assistance during his appearance before a House of Representatives committee last week, and testimony has not been sought from General Ham. Suspicions are that the direct questions would blow the Republicans big “scandal” right out of the water.

As if that was not enough it has been announced that the nations deficit has to the lowest rate since The Criminal was escorted out of the white House. Praise Obama. .

Must be terrible to be a scandal prone doom and gloom rightie right now.

Hey Richie, been amused since I first read this "endorsement" of Athens.

It is definately a public service that you and Mauser allow this "parrot" to continually comment on the "news" (sarcasm intended)...that way many of us do not need to listen to the shouting, talking heads on Fox and far right wing radio, and I for one thank you for that.

You really should add a disclaimer though...maybe something to the effect that "the opinions or comments listed as fact posted by one Linda Athens are her own and do not necessarily reflect those of the owners or employees of this newspaper"...just a bit of CYA advice.

BTW, have you been keeping up with her Cairo blog? It will be interesting to see how she handles the "I voted for JFK" situation...yep, certainly amusing!
