Letter: Christmas shouldn't be forced on us

I have lived in Kingman almost all of my life. We moved here in 1985 when I was 10 years old. In this day and age of increased commercialism of the season, my family and I have become resentful of the ads on television and the feelings of being forced to celebrate before we are ready. As much as we hate to celebrate early, we feel we are forced to make Christmas purchases earlier and earlier every year in order to take advantage of the deals that are advertised.

My own personal resentment was increased the other night to see the tree on top of Radar Hill already lit up for the holiday season. Ever since I was young, I have looked forward to the lighting of the tree as a beginning of the Christmas season, and it has traditionally been lit on Thanksgiving night.

When did the city of Kingman succumb to pressures of advertising and start assisting in forcing its residents to celebrate Christmas early? Well I, for one, am very irritated to see the tree lit up before its time, and all it makes me want to do is dig in my heels in typical Arizona fashion and protest Christmas altogether.

The shops will not get any of our money this year. We vow to simply spend time with our family and not participate in the forced commercialism we have seen increasing in recent years.

So to all of my friends, we are sorry. Feel free to come visit with us. We are always happy to see you. But please don't buy us any gifts. We won't participate; we are celebrating family this year, not commercialism.

Gena Durrett

@FLS...There is no way that 250 words is sufficient to properly discuss the plight, the merits, and the deficiencies of Europe's Protestants who emigrated about 400 years ago, some of them to South Africa. I have had both black and white friends in South Africa. The only thing I can say briefly about black-white relations is that relevant discussions must be intelligent and not solely guided by wishful thinking. About the films - this also must be properly explained, but the answer to your question is that some films featured themes and titles from events in which I participated. If you can't grasp the principle (actually, the reality) of this government working collusively with the film industry, you cannot comment as knowledgeably upon current events as the situation requires. Picasso couldn't paint a masterpiece in 5 minutes, and I cannot properly explain this phenomenon within the Miner's word limit, period.

"I took full responsibility for what I had written, and do so now."

So you are saying, here and now, that movies actually have been made specifically about incidents in your life, some starring Tom Hanks? Shall I post those past comments of yours for you?

It is a very simple yes or no question that will in no way put you up against a word limit.

By the way, regarding this and other claims you have made in the past. Over the next few days, as time allows, I will be searching the archives for many of the past racist bigoted comments you have made over the years.

I am sure that when I post them you will claim it is a "conspiracy” of some kind.

@Bob Moore and FLS.....I stand behind everything I have written, and would be willing to visit the Miner if necessary, to access the comments Mr. Moore did, in fact, make here. As for the films, there is too much at stake to cringe before the likes of you two. They indicated their 911 terror attacks years beforehand in the films, and the crimes which law enforcement has committed here in Mohave County were, indeed, threaded into major films as FLS states that I have previously written. This also took place in Las Vegas. So there you have it - somebody here who will not back down from the truth, and furthermore.....(as General MacArthur told the Australians in WWII), I don't believe in a defensive war strategy, anymore than this lying criminal government does. On to battle.

I'm disappointed in you, "Frank". I would have expected you to visit the thread I recommended to Bob Moore, and return here with your vilifications over my constitutional stand. Fact is, neither you nor Bob can do that, because I accurately stated the facts. But keep circling around like the thread vultures you are, looking for perceived weak spots. There are more noble things to do with one's time, so gotta go.

@ Bob Moore.....as a contrast, when FLS attributed to me my most controversial statements - speaking of Hollywood's collusively-produced filsm and the government's threading their crimes through them - I took full responsibility for what I had written, and do so now. So far, after attempting to locate your comments in the Miner archives using those two words "hate" and "rage", I couldn't get any results. The I used some of my own well-worn phrases, and also got no results. Hmmm. That's the truth.

"If you are unwilling or unable to remember your own words, I'll leave it at that."

I am sure you will "leave it at that". You do so in the hope that others will not use your own words from past comments to prove what a weaver of cospiracy theory based fairy tales you are.

By the way, has the govt., working hand in hand with Hollywood (and that "certain ethnic minority") made any new new film about incidents in your life, starring Tom Hanks?

This is so hypocritical! First off no one is forcing you to do anything. You can choose to only buy gifts after December 1. However, you want the "deals". Give me a break. Just another reason to complain. Maybe buying no gifts at all should be your new tradition, then you never have to worry about this again.

“@Bob Moore..... If you are unwilling or unable to remember your own words, I'll leave it at that.”

Nice try, but it is not a case of either unwillingness or an inability to remember on my part, it is a case of never having said it. And you’re ridiculous “I believe” line followed by “I’ll leave it at that,” reinforces the fact that you cannot prove your allegation.

Once again your irrational ranting and subject changing is why I do not – as a rule – respond to you. And I shall not make that error again. I’ll let you and little “LOL” and Victor duke it out in the future.

@Bob Moore..... If you are unwilling or unable to remember your own words, I'll leave it at that. But you have now accused me of unsupportable comments. If that is what you believe, why don't you start with my comments at the "DPS over stepping on text crackdown" thread here, regarding constitutional law, and prove me wrong? Also, you and Victor Stokes were in the military long enough to have become aware of government behavior which cannot always be stated with proof (sometimes because you were bound by oath and/or legal consequences). That's all for now .

All you people who praise capitalism now seem to be comdemning it. Why is that? Businesses' main goal is to make a profit, isn't it? And if they can do it by advertising early, why not? There are people who will start shopping for next year's Christmas gifts the day after this Christmas. So what? They're smart. They won't be trying to buy their gifts all at once and can spread the cost out over a year's time.

I hope everyone can enjoy a peaceful, joyous and safe Christmas. If you don't want to buy gifts, that is your right - that's not important. But don't belittle those companies whose business depends on our money to keep solvent.

I start putting up my Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving because it takes me a week or so to get them all up, and they'll be ready to light Thanksgiving night. I'm late this year - haven't even started yet cause I was sick. But seeing other decorations around the community motivates me. They make me happy and gets me in the mood to enjoy this marvelous season. Nothing is prettier than a house decked out in lights and decorations.

Gena, one question. How do your children, if young, feel about your decision?

“I believe Mr. Moore's comments to which I referred took place several months ago in the context of Dr. Hurd's postings about scientific theories and findings relating to God.”

“I believe” is proof of nothing and thank you for once again supporting my contention that you cannot provide any evidence of what you have attributed to me.

I believe all righties are as goofy as a box full of Palin’s, but I cannot prove it – it is just something “I believe.”

“… he replied with the comments which I have correctly attributed to him. I haven't the slightest doubt about this….”

Nope, did not make any such statement.

This is one of the reasons I have avoided responding to your ridiculous comments, because you are never able to support the nonsense you post.

I believe Mr. Moore's comments to which I referred took place several months ago in the context of Dr. Hurd's postings about scientific theories and findings relating to God. Another reader accused Moore of hate, and he replied with the comments which I have correctly attributed to him. I haven't the slightest doubt about this, and it is disingenous of so fierce a critic of others - referring, of course, to Moore - to deny his most revealing comments.

Gena, I'm sorry but no body forces me to do anything I don't want to! A valueable lesson my dad taught me. Sure Christmas trees get set up on display @ Halloween it's ridiculous, but I ignore it and continue on with my life. I choose (key word I) when to start my Christmas shopping, I choose when to set up my own Christmas tree, I choose not to let media and society "force me" into celebrating what the true meaning of Christmas means to me and my family. I can only hope you find a way around your frustration and choose not to let everything around you sway your feelings about what Christmans means to you and your family.

“@Mr. Moore....you did use those exact words. I have a very good memory.”

And yet you cannot show where I said that. Hmmm, curious.

“To find those words would require going over all your inumerable posts over the last year.”

Do it or …well you know.

“You volunteered the words, and I hold you to it.”

Nope, never said it. Prove I did.

@Mr. Moore....you did use those exact words. I have a very good memory. It stuck with me. To find those words would require going over all your inumerable posts over the last year. You volunteered the words, and I hold you to it. On the God thing, I don't fear what most blabbers blab. I look for what they DO, which in my case has been absolutely nothing.

What makes me sick is that you get beat over the head with Christmas since BEFORE Halloween, which is sad enough as it is. Then, on Christmas Day, when you ARE in the mood for Holiday songs, etc., the songs on the radio stop at noon, and the movies are cut off. The money making and commercialism make me sick. We all know we will be shopping for the holidays. Do we really need to have it rammed down our throats, then as soon as they have our money and the holiday is actually here, boom its over...don't let the door hit you. Hold onto your money, businesses, i'm not buying this year...

“Bob Moore has given us fair warning as to his own disposition and choices in life - he does not fear God, and is motivated by hate and rage (his own words).”

I have avoided your blather in the past, but when you directly reference me you must be addressed.

First I will challenge you to provide proof that I have ever said I am motivated, “by hate and rage.” The date and direct quote will work quite well. Thank you.

As to fearing God I have never understood the Christian concept of fearing their “loving” God. God and I have a nice working relationship and I do not fear him, nor does he fear me.

“The descriptor, weird, is subjective, and is a judgement on the actions or appearance of the couple in question.”

Nope, not in the least. It is a statement of fact and not a judgmental use of the word. That is unless you somehow seem to believe that killing children in the name of religious nonsense is somehow not weird.

Article comment by: The tree is cheery

I don't think the city had any intent of commercializing Christmas. They always light it by 12-1. Did you want them to spend your tax dollars on overtime to put it up over the weekend or today? I think it would have been double time on holidays. Come on if lighting the tree a few days early makes you so upset, you need to chill. It has nothing to do with early advertising but to bring some cheer to those who appreciate it. You do know that Thanksgiving was a little later this year?

@OKR....oh, c'mon Mr. Resident, give ol' Bob a break here (although your posts usually rank among the best). Weirdness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Some people would say I'm weird for rising early for a mug of English tea and thinking. But then, I think Kingman is weird. There are several reasons, but a couple in particular stand out above the rest - that people really believe they can walk right over a person's rights and thug them, and that that person will just slink away. And that others, despite repeated lucid efforts to relieve them of this malady, cannot be brought to know what is taking place around them. Bob Moore has given us fair warning as to his own disposition and choices in life - he does not fear God, and is motivated by hate and rage (his own words). I wouldn't insult the issues at hand here by attempting to address those issues within the Miner's word limit.

Personally, im with Gena on this one, not necessarily over the tree lighting thing, but everything relating Christmas starting so soon. It seems as each year passes, they over-emphasize Christmas even broader. I remember back when i was a kid that Christmas was never drawn out as much as it is today. I remember nothing being mentioned about Christmas until about 2 maybe 3 weeks before it. This year i noticed Christmas was being advertised even before Halloween came. Back then Christmas was not even in our thoughts, the halloween candy and dressing up was. Same with my parents.
Halloween didnt nearly get as much recognition this year and a few years before as Christmas is now.
