Column: Paula Deen's slow-cooked, cheese-filled career killer

Alan Choate
News Editor

Last week was one for the history books, with huge decisions coming down from the U.S. Supreme Court, an immigration reform bill passing the Senate and events unfolding on the world stage.

So let's take a break and talk about the travails of Paula Deen, the southern cooking queen who's watching her food empire fall apart. Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Novo Nordisk, the Food Network, Smithfield Foods, Sears, Kmart and Walgreens all decided to cut ties with her, nominally - according to most news reports, anyway - because she admitted to once using a racial slur, specifically the "N-word."

To say Deen is being dropped by her business partners because she once used a racial slur is like saying her Ultimate Fantasy Deep-Fried Cheesecake packs a few extra calories - both statements are accurate to a point, but fail to show the whole picture.

Deen and her brother, Earl "Bubba" Hiers, are being sued by a former employee of Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, Ga., which Deen and Hiers co-own.

The suit accuses Hiers of maintaining a hostile workplace, including passing porn around at meetings and using racial epithets. According to Deen's deposition, he actually admitted to a lot of the alleged behavior, something she didn't accept. To her, all the fault lies with bitter people jealous of her success who are trying to extort her family.

This "poor me I'm a victim" act runs throughout the deposition, and it doesn't do her any favors. But she really did damage when she discussed plans for Hiers' wedding.

Deen mentioned a restaurant she'd visited with her husband where "the whole entire wait staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie ... And I remember saying I would love to have servers like that ... but I would be afraid someone would misinterpret."

The waiters were apparently very professional and good at their jobs, but Deen danced around whether it was the color of their skin that made the experience what it was.

The attorney questioning her asked, "So is there any reason that you could not have something just like that but have people of different races?"

"That's what made it so impressive," said Deen, again noting the waiters' abilities. "It was the whole picture, the setting of the restaurant, their professionalism."

The place evoked a different era in America, she said.

Deen: "I didn't live back in those days but I've seen pictures, and the pictures that I've seen, that restaurant represented a certain era in America."

The attorney asked her what era that is, and she said, "Well, I don't know. After the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War."

Attorney: "Right. Back in an era when there were middle-aged black men waiting on white people."

Deen: "Well, it was not only black men. It was black women."

Historically accurate? Yes. Black men and women were slaves.

Tone deaf? Absolutely. You can't be a media star and talk fondly about that horrible chapter in our history when twisted pseudo-logic was used to justify owning other human beings. And you certainly can't get so nostalgic about it that you think about recreating the era at your brother's wedding.

So while it looks at first as though Deen's been thrown under the bus by her corporate sponsors, the truth is that her downfall was self-inflicted. These companies are national and international brands that don't want the headache of being associated with outdated mindsets that are quickly fading outside of certain pockets of the country.

Not that she's through. Her latest cookbook is doing well, and business at Uncle Bubba's is reportedly through the roof.

And even though this can't be good for me, I just spotted Deen's recipe for "slow cooker cheese-stuffed meatballs and sauce." I think I'm going to have to cook it anyway.

Anson, try to be compassionate, you know, turn the other cheek like the Christians following LA's example do. It helps to understand that these folks believe the lies as being the truth because they get their information from tainted news sources - FOXNews, Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc. They hear it repeated over and over and it becomes the truth.

Not sure how the Paula Deen discussion turned to Al Sharpton but as a liberal I have to say MSNBC could have found a better and more deserving talk show host.

I am going to let you in on a huge non-secret, Skeezix. Cable, which subscribers pay for, is not "our public airways". If you don't believe me, just ask the FCC.

"Two kinds of racists ......."

Yep, a a, ther are indeed two kinds. The ones who get a pass, who are always either black or white liberals. Or people who do not get a pass, like Paula Deen, or Don Imus. The huge difference between someone like Paula Deen and Al Sharpton is that Paula Deen gets her show cancelled, while Al Sharpton actually gets a show on MSNBC after his racism was well known. And the only reason I can see for the two of them being treated so differently is skin tone, Ms Deens being the wrong one for ever getting a pass, like he does.

Scratch that "two kinds", there are actually threel kind. The third is white liberals who pretend that they care about the plight of Blacks in the U.S., but who'e real intent is to keep as many of them dependent on the govt. as possible in order to keep them voting democrat.

Yeah, decades of the govt.'s "war on poverty" has really reaped great results for all of the money spent.

"code words"

Used here? What are they, a a?

Hope Mills, NC - Farmer Ronnie Spell is always in the local Independence Day parade with all his many antique John Deere tractors and a load of watermelons to sell. Sometimes he has the Confederate flag with him, other times not.

Last week, Farmer Spell put a big sign on the side of the watermelon trailer saying White History Month Hug a Wht Prsn

Many were upset about it, saying they will now have to change the sign up sheet to make sure this never happens again so they can keep it a family event.

Those that were upset were white. Some said it was racist.

Some black people interviewed weren't bothered by it at all.

Is that old white guilt going to ever leave our country? Apparently not.

No, you do not. Insulting someone who proves their claims are factual belittles YOU!

Right on Linda A! For you, "Tired of Both Women"...she gets under people's skin on this issue because SHE....IS...RIGHT. Don't get me wrong, it's not because the comments Linda A made MAKE her right, but rather the FACTS. Race Baiters, reverse racisim...LET US FORGET IT, I'm sick of it already! So she said the word...ok, AND!?! ultimately, weather or not she brought any additional damage upon herself isn't so much of the issue as it is the WORD she used! Who CARES except for those who control media and money...not a lot of them if memory serves and that's usually the norm. Get a life, move on, slavery was over years ago, stop using it as a card (IF YOU ARE) and let US live our lives. Stop reporting this usless GARBAGE!!!

“The most non-transparent, lying POTUS in our history, fake BC, millions spent covering up his past. And you speak of truth?”

And YOU have the audacity to speak of truth when you post blatant falsehoods and bear false witness daily?

I find it fascinating that you never addressed the “lies” you promised to reply to in your blog (search Remember Cairo) on 12 May. And you speak of truth?

We are still the truth about your claiming to have voted for JFK.

“…but there isn't a black person today that would rather still be back living in Africa.”

Huh? What in the heck does that line mean?

“What are your thoughts on the Irish coming as indentured servants, often treated much worse than blacks?”

Well the Irish – according to the hate mongers of the time – were a bunch of shiftless, low-life, drunken bums – so I can see where they deserved such treatment.

Of course over the years we have come, as a nation, to hate not only the Irish, but the Italians, the French, the Germans, anyone Asian, the “brown” people from south of the border and of course anyone who does not believe in the so-called “Christian” God.

We have a GRAND TRADITION of hate in this nation.

Frank Lee Speaking and Jimi LightFoot sound line two pea's in one pod, racism exists in every race, every culture its a fact of life! Now the only difference is those who hide it deny it and those who admit it, I have more respect for the ones who admit it than the cowards who hide their racism and deny it! One can find a white, black, red, brown or yellow racist all one has to do is look, read what does it matter what the color of the racist is? If they are a racist they are a racist, only difference is are they a honest one a cowardly one or do they one day regret, change and repent? I guess only Jesus will know and he will sort them all out in the end!

What a co-in-si-dink.....I am sitting here in my wheelchair NOTat collecting disabilty. And I currently do not have a car that is running.

Great ploy at trying to garner sympathy. It took you long enough to admit you are all talk and no action regarding a "weighty issue" you profess to care so much about.

So what's the solution? The U.S. should shoulder the cost for these alleged victims of yours? I imagine that would please you greatly. After all, being on disability it will never cost you, personally, a dime. So, are there any other "weighty issues" you think that the rest of us should be throwing our tax dollars at?

No, I'm doing nothing for Iraq's kids except making others aware of their situation, so that when some overweight Southern bimbo drops the N word, we don't have to drop everything trying to solve the problem.

The only one who making stuff up is the person I took the quote from. It seems that person's life is centered on trying to belittle people. Must be a sad lonely life.

As to your archive search, you should understand, I used a different name before this one, if you ask nicely I might tell you what it is, then again...maybe not. You would only use it to cherry pick your facts like you normally do.

As always, your belittlement attempts make me...

And:

And once more you did not answer my question. I told you I am not concerned with this alleged "weighty issue". You, on the other hand, keep expressing that you are concerned. And once more you have responded without telling us what YOU are doing for the children you claim you are so concerned about. I will take that to mean you are doing nothing at all.

I have nothing to prove to you, I know what I said, you want to claim different, you prove it. I have said more than once that Sharpton is a piece of garbage. How about searching for Sharptongue and Jessie Jackassson? Too much work for you I suppose.

Also, why don't you look and see how many times I have said I am liberal or left or conservative or right? Answer....NONE, ZERO.

I have always said I am independent and would like to do away with the two party system. Again, that escaped you in trying to belittle someone again, right?

My bringing up Al Sharpton was not directed specifically at you. Or did you miss the words. "Speaking of racism, here is one for all of you leftists concerning one of your MSNBC hero's.."

If you consider yourself a "leftist", than you were/are lumped in with the group, and not singled out.

My mentioning liberal hypocrisy with how many liberals who are racists and bigots get/got a pass is perfectly justified.

Al Sharpton - "you a punk fa***t",

"“We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it.” (Kean University, NJ, 1994)

""If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house"" (A rally in Crown Heights Brooklyn, 1991.)

Sharpton helped lead the effort to have Don Imus fired for his insensitive/racist comments. So why is Al on MSNBC?

Then there is the now dead Sen. Robert Byrd. A former KKK leader who was "forgiven" and given a pass by Dems. If he had been a Republican would have been forgiven for his past?

"I have stated on here more than once......”

A search of the KDM archives under "opinion" for the past 3 years, using the words 'Nice Chuckle, Rev. Al Sharpton" results in "Nothing matched your initial search". I then entered the word "racism", from 2001 to the present. Lots of results, lots of comments. But none by you at all mentioning Al Sharpton.

But you should have no trouble at all providing a link to any of them. After all, you did use the words "more than once" to describe your past commenting.

Are you making it up? No big shock there.

There is another type of racist. The worst kind.

Like an abusive parent they coddle and over protect while constantly telling their charges that they aren’t as good as their brothers.

This sadistic parent tells their dependents that they are crippled by appearance and that they need the protection of the parent because they can’t do it on their own. They need constant help and enablement.

This type of relationship lacks any accountability as any failures are chalked up as someone else’s fault and responsibility.

These children grow up angry and believe that the world dislikes and is against them.

But woe is the parental shock when these children take to the streets over a perceived wrong to their brother. Terrified are the parents when one of these children takes his military and police training to stand off and fight against hundreds of fellow officers over office politics and racially incorrect speech.

But who else is he to blame? Mother Government, Cousin Media, Uncle Special Interest and Auntie Liberal have always told him his successes were his but failures were someone else’s fault, because America doesn’t like the way he looks.

The cycle of abuse and enablement is a hard thing to break. To raise a productive and peaceful population of Americans, the parents need to stop crippling their charges with the perception of you against them mentality just to garner votes, ratings, donations, or warm fuzzy feelings.

What our country needs is truth? And you supported Obama? How do those two go together? The most non-transparent, lying POTUS in our history, fake BC, millions spent covering up his past. And you speak of truth?

Wow! Would that we COULD get some truth out of this administration with all it's many scandals swirling around.

No one denies slavery was wrong. What you libs refuse to admit is, it was England that we separated from finally that was into slavery big time along with the rest of the world.

The Christian Americans that first came here, and later on the Adams families, were appalled at slavery and wanted it abolished immediately but worked long and hard to make it a reality because, of course, we were not free from England so we had to do what they told us to do. Even so, we had less slaves than all others.

We fought the Revolutionary War over slavery also.

Incidentally, while no one condones slavery the cotton thing is revisionist history and not the reason for the Civil War but there isn't a black person today that would rather still be back living in Africa.

What are your thoughts on the Irish coming as indentured servants, often treated much worse than blacks? How about the fact we took the least amount of slaves in our hemisphere as any country, and ours were first sent to Virginia by Britain. How about the fact, 10% of the blacks in America also owned slaves?

Your point is? I knew this already...and how did I know this? I saw it ON THE NEWS. I was pointing out that LiJiAma said there was nothing on the news about it, which is obviously not true, and you try to twist words into making me say something I did not.

As to Al Sharpton, why direct that at me? I have stated on here more than once I think that man is a walking piece of garbage along the lines of Beck and Limbaugh. You must have forgotten that in the course of trying to belittle people for no reason.

Linda, we were the only country to fight a civil war over slavery because every other country simply outlawed it, about 50 years before we did! In fact, the south lost the civil war because England and the other European nations refused to support them, even though they needed cheap cotton for their mills!

As for my great-great grandfather and the many other white men who fought to free the slaves, they were heroes. The racism of the south in no way takes away from their honorable actions and is really besides the point, my comment was about southerners and others who fool themselves into believing that black people were better off under slavery!!

In any case, a truth commission would help us get down to the reality of what slavery was...so we can move past it. That is what our country needs more than anything...truth and reconciliation!!

Speaking of racism, here is one for all of you leftists concerning one of your MSNBC hero's, Al Sharpton. He sent out a Tweet on yesterday, July 3.:

"What comes out of your mouth reveals what's in your heart and soul. One can only bring out what in in them."

The website that had that followed it up with a video of Al on TV more than a decade ago n a talk show. On it he jumps up and is screaming at someone in the audiance "You a punk Fa&&&t". (exact words) Looks like he revealed what was in his heart and soul then.

And he still has as good a command of the English Language as he did back then. LoL. And since he has been nothing other than a poverty pimp his whole life, I doubt he has changed in his thinking. But he is black, and a lib, so he gets a pass.
