Editorial: Brechler back where he belongs

Rich Thurlow

The conversation in the newsroom after Delbert Brechler was convicted in absentia had one theme: Arrest him before he can get drunk, get behind the wheel and kill someone else.

Brechler was extremely drunk when he killed 17-year-old Cody Raymond on July 21 a year ago. Brechler turned down a plea agreement that, in retrospect, looks like a real good deal now.

But Brechler also skipped his trial earlier this month. No matter. They held the party without him and found him guilty.

Thoughts of Brechler on the loose brought back another memory, this one of Greg Wallen.

Wallen raped a 4-year-old girl in Pahrump, Nev., about 20 years ago, was convicted and skipped the sentencing. I'm going on memory here, but I'm pretty sure the above is correct.

What is certain is that Wallen raped and killed a girl in Las Vegas before he was tracked down, brought before the judge and sentenced for the earlier rape.

DNA evidence finally tied Wallen to the 1994 murder in 2009. Where he is now is beyond my ability to search the Internet. His absence from anything newer than 2012 indicates, according to crime reporter Doug McMurdo, the likelihood he's undergoing a continuing mental evaluation.

As long as he's in custody, that's fine with me. And that also goes for Delbert Brechler.

Sheesh, using the Internet to search for someone as heinious as Greg Wallen is not rocket science. It's not even kindergarten science. I typed his name into Google and came up with 427,000 hits. To narrow the field of results I added rape after his name and came up with 326,000 hits.
