Guest Column: We're not respecting America
Theresa Evans
Kingman resident

I have, for the last 15 or so years, sat quietly by watching the political comedy going on in Washington, D.C. The best way I can describe it so everyone understands is the recent lopsided Super Bowl. Tea party androids versus Democratic drones - neither side willing to work as a team, or should they show signs of working outside the box, their own parties shoot them down.

Independent thinking and action, as well as bipartisanship, is considered treason, especially to the tea party and the GOP. Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Palin and others of their ilk take facts and figures that are true, then start twisting and squeezing them to fit into their agenda. This is how they spin the truth.

The circus known as Congress is a system of good ol' boy networks of donors, lobbyists and special interest groups. The GOP has always been the party of the wealthy, powerful individuals who feel threatened by those who dare to believe in equality for all regardless of race, creed or color.

Educated voters who know the issues and want to solve problems, and working people who want better conditions in which benefits, pensions, and Social Security are available for all, are frustrated by the roadblocks set down by the Republican-led Congress.

Quality of life is anathema to the GOP and the wealthy except for themselves. Religious beliefs greatly influence their thinking, not because they believe in them but because the religious right wields great power. It appears "It's my way or the highway." Choice is a six-letter word.

They complain about religious intolerance to those of us whose beliefs are opposite of theirs, but their shouts of family values and religion are attached when they use the legislature to try to pass laws forcing their views on others: Shades of Oliver Cromwell. The news and social media are partly responsible, as is the American public. The media will twist stories any way they can to get a story. The Congress will do the same, using the Constitution the way they want and the public believes them. Apathetic people do not want to think for themselves, leading them as sheep to slaughter. Twisting and diverting thought is the way they control us.

In the 1760s and '70s, we started our way to independence because the colonies were being treated as vassals of the crown. We are now being treated the same by the GOP tea party religious conservatives.

Stand up. Get the facts on your own and show America the respect, love and pride we have in her. Vote them out instead of rewarding them over and over.

Well, well. Eric Cantor is gone. It really didn't matter to me who took him down, just that he was taken down. I hope this is just the beginning of the end for the Republican Party, or at least the end to this do nothing Congress!

"watched while the BLM had snipers rifles aimed at the Bundy family as they were rounding up their cattle."

Didn't know you drove all the way up there just to get a look at it yourself. What's that you say, that is what you were told? Oh, okay. That's good enough then!

“Harry Reid has everything to do with it! It is his friend, former senate advisor, whose son wants to do a deal with China for solar panels to go on that land!”

No, dear. The Chinese solar project was to go on land in Laughlin no where near where Bundy has been ripping off taxpayers.

“…before accusing Bundy of ‘cheating the taxpayers’.”

Bundy used public land for twenty years without paying the requisite grazing fees – now if that is not ripping off the American people I don’t know what is.

I have to admit to being fascinated by those who are defending Bundy. These are the same people upset by “freeloaders,” anyone who is not “pulling their weight,” want justice for crooks and demand personal responsibility, yet somehow find the deplorable actions of Bundy to be perfectly acceptable. The guy has cheated the American people out of $1.3 million and after going to court refused to abide by the decision of the judges.

Harry Reid has everything to do with it!
It is his friend, former senate advisor, whose son wants to do a deal with China for solar panels to go on that land!
One reason for BLM backing off is because of Harry Reid's name coming into the public in stand off between Bundy and BLM.

I have a cousin, Debbie Smith in the Nevada Assembly, she as worthless as Reid is!

You need to take a good look where you are being tax cheated for real before accusing Bundy of "cheating the taxpayers".
Since Pres. Obama has been in DC every entity of the federal govt. has become as corrupt as the Mexican Cartel at your expense!
Divide and conquer is the motto of OB.

U.S. State Dept. has lost $6,000,000,000 and doesn't know where it went.
IRS is with holding tax refunds claiming the people have relatives dead or simply are unknown who owe taxes. Yet IRS has sent millions of dollars in recent time in refunds to people in prison and multiple refunds to one address.
So ask yourself who's cheating who??
And, it isn't the American people not respecting America, it the federal govt. who has forgotten who works for who!!, and not respecting We The People.

It's interesting that the comments on this letter are pretty much divided with a few fence riders and a few completely off subject.
It's troubling that neither side seems to be able to question their own beliefs or admit that the other side might have something to say that is worth listening to and maybe even thinking about seriously.
It's sad that we have reached the state in our country that we are so divided we are unwilling to even consider a viewpoint other than our own.
There has always been opposite viewpoints on most all subjects in America, but until the last few years we have at least tolerated others beliefs.
Radical Liberals are intolerant of anything that is not the same as their beliefs and love to throw the race card around. That is such a shallow argument it would be funny if it wasn't so sickening.
Radical Conservatives are just as intolerant and frequently use religion to back up their argument. Religion and politics have no place together. There are too many good honest people who are not religious.
The Great Divider has caused a tremendous chasm between the people of the United States. Hopefully, we can change that by listening less to the talking heads on both sides and think for ourselves.

“I wonder if they will investigate the fiasco in Nevada with the Rancher and his property that Harry Reid is involved in.”

As usual no facts just the regurgitation of the right wing shouting head talking points. 1) It is not the ranchers land, it is ours, the American people, 2) Harry Reid had nothing to do with the BLM attempting to get we taxpayers the #1.3 million dollars the “rancher” owed for fattening his cattle and profiting from the use of OUR land.

A lot of us are paying close attention to the BLM attack on Bundy and the connection w/Harry Reid's son Rory, primary rep'r of Chinese ENN Energy Group seeking to build a $5 billion solar panel plant on 9000 acres of Clark Co., land it appears NEEDS TO BE CATTLE FREE.

In spite of it's $38.6 mill appraisal, it was picked up for a paltry $4.5 million, has been pushed by Harry since his 2011 China excursion but Rory says he and Dad have never discussed it and I'm the Queen of England.

My post didn't appear but those so called endangered tortoises, scooped off to S Las Vegas in '91 due to home building, not cattle, and from whence developers/homebuilders were taxed for them until the recession when building and new taxes dried up - well, 700 are now being dumped back in the desert, the other 700 euthanized. And Bundy gets the blame.

Yeah, lots of us watch Searchlight Harry, watched as the voting machines in Clark Co in 2012 marked you for obama even in you voted for Romney, watch weekly as he stands and lies, calls the Koch Bros unAmerican (but what he and Rory are doing is American?) and watched while the BLM had snipers rifles aimed at the Bundy family as they were rounding up their cattle.

Most of the articles in todays paper gave me one of the best laughs I have had in a long time. One of my hobbies was teaching a one hour history class about the RECONSTRUCTION PERIOD(1866-1897)First Democrats came from the south and wanted slavery and Republicans were from the north and fought slavery. Second, it was twisted to sound like carpet baggers were from the south. WRONG again. Most carpet baggers were northerners who cam south because they could buy a farm for taxes(as little as $25.00) Then the democratic congress fought against equal rights in the 40's, 50's and so on. Before you start to twist history to fit yourself, make sure you have an audience that does not know history and will agree with you. Please when you open your mouth, at least tell the truth. Be honest with yourself and the people. When you lie about the republicans, democrats or independents it will come back to haunt you. But most of all, what are we teaching our kids???????

@TW.....Person #1 works hard, saves what he can, educates himself, and participates knowledgeably in the political process (if only in discourse - his choice). Person #2 has their hand out for everything, raises criminal kids, and riots/burns down the town when they don't get their own way. Tell me how these two can stand together, and why those of us who point this out are divisive.

Thank God after thousands of supporters showed up, the BLM decided to back off before anyone got shot.

This is prime example why it has gotten to point one cannot have great respect for a federal government that has run awry with corruption!!
It is also a prime example of how and why the American people CAN and SHOULD stand strong with one another as federal over reach is growing rapidly!!!

Ken Raymond and son Gary have the Mt. Ferris Ranch 40 mi. north of Rawlins, Wy.
They have to clear everything they do with BLM. They had 15,000 acres grazing pasture and wanted to divide it to 2 7500 pastures which would req. fencing, all got approved on all levels, they bought the material got fence up. Quite sometime later BLM told them it had to come down due to the sage chicken, that hawks could sit on the fence and attack the sage chicken.
Needless to say Ken Raymond stood firm on his rights!
Ranchers work hard at caring for the land and the cattle they raise, it is early dawn till late evening.
EPA and BLM try to make it as miserable as possible for them, but those like Ken Raymond and Clive Bundy know they have to stand up and strong for their rights and thankfully though ranchers are far from one another you will always see them come together for America Strong!! We all should do!

Ya kinda hit it on the head little sister. I've said the same repeatedly but with more sarcasm.
Some of the other responses reflect the accuracy of your article.
Wake up folks, it ain't the Dems. or the Reps., its all of 'em on a gravy train where we foot the bill.
Unfortunately nobody's likely to make on the American psyche without the time tested method for training a mule that requires first getting their attention.
Much as I detest and distrust the officials surrounding that 'poor struggling rancher' up along the Strip, the 'fine print' of the issue reveals that he has asked for trouble since he quit paying his grazing fees back in 1993. He must have been doing pretty well without all that overhead.

This is a song I've been hearing most of my adult life: " Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the working man." Truth is, like the rest of us, each one is for himself or herself first. Behind altruism lies egoism. I've also heard : " If you don't vote, you can't complain.". Sure I can. But I don't. Why would I .
vote for someone I know is lying to me ? Besides, who REALLY elects the President ? If you haven't checked out how the Electoral College works, you owe it to yourself to do so. Quite an eye opener. I do my best to not get upset over things I have no control over.

Wouldn't it be just swell if the lefties could just get the righties to just shut up, so they could continue to destroy this country unopposed?
It the right says one thing about just about anything they are called racist or radical, but let a leftie come out with some piece of garbage and every leftie right down to the dumb ones with pink cowboy hats think it is the best thing since mothers apple pie.....they do stick together no matter how ignorant it is.
It is hard to believe how anyone could even consider being a Democrat these days as they certainly are the party of stupid!
I wonder if they will investigate the fiasco in Nevada with the Rancher and his property that Harry Reid is involved in. They sure stopped that in a hurry, when it got out about the corrupt Democrat Reid (dingy Harry) but I hope someone brings the scum down.

THANK YOU THERESA! The truth hurts many of the posters here. Our country has turned into a school yard of third graders (beginning shortly after 9/11). As demonstrated in most of the comments to your intelligent, thoughtful, and truthful column. Hard to imagine things will change any time soon. The dividers do a good job at keeping us divided. Apparently that's what too many American's like, constant division, no accomplishments, no progress..... heartbreaking. We are only great when we stand together, not when we name call and act like children.

Dollar Bill:

The Founders weren't ambivalent, were devout Christians in private life and w/our Founding documents, all of which come either directly from the Bible or from Bible scholars who got their beliefs directly from the Bible (Montesquieu, etc).

Dixiecrats: There's been a concerted effort to misrepresent the truth about Dixiecrats to discourage blacks from considering the Republican party.

In 1948, they bolted from the Democrat party after the Dems finally came around and put civil rights in the party platform. The GOP had been for blacks civil rights since it's inception in the 1860's.

No chance Dixiecrats bolted to the Republican party ever but started the States Rights Dem Party (Dixiecrats) in hopes of deadlocking the election, throwing it to the House, then using their weight to force the Dem Party to dump the civil rights platform.

Failing, 23 went back in the Dem Party, 3 (Thurmond, Helms, Godwind) became Republicans. The 23 continued fighting against rights for blacks but Truman won, eventually their stranglehold was broken and the end result was civil rights for blacks.

GOP especially pushed Voting Amendment. But at NO TIME were Dixiecrats EVER like the Republican party. They used KKK, lynchings, phony juries, etc to fight black equality.

Mr. Moore, Abortion affects every taxpayers' lives, part of your tax dollars are supporting Planned Parenthood to the tune of over $5million a year. And you say, but wait other entities receive subsidies. Yes that's true but wait, they aren't murdering those who are not allowed to grow to their full potential as a human being which can take an entire lifetime.
Besides, I know what is like to hold and care for that 26 week baby and watch her thrive and grow and become 15 and already had the date noted on the calendar when she can get her driver's permit, which will be Tues. April 15th.
Think about it, she was tiny but perfect!
When we see evil, know what's evil and do nothing, that is evil.
Wouldn't promoting adoption be best after much teaching on importance of abstinence?
I wonder how many guys out there would be devastated to find out after the fact someone made a decision to kill his child denying him a chance to know his own flesh and blood?
It isn't only the woman's body, there is a tiny person's body that is having it's life snuffed out.
U.S. Supreme Court of today needs to right a wrong that was done in 1973!

I think this letter might have been the most well-written and intelligent I've ever seen on this website.

And the comments are, yet, sadly exactly as expected.

You advocated for personal choice, freedom, and the resulting due diligence of researching for one's self policy positions and voting accordingly?

You might as well have suggested everyone reading those words start speaking Korean.

Anyway, thanks for brining some sense and education to the mix.

@LOL

“And remember that to do so you better be able to offer proof they did it based on thier religious beliefs.”

Here you go, one recent example. In South Carolina two GOP’ers inserted into a bill, naming a state fossil wording based strictly on their religious claptrap. Senators Mike Fair and Kevin Bryant inserted the following line in the bill, “Sec 1-1-712A-The Columbian Mammoth, which was created on the sixth day with the other bests of the field, is designated as the official fossil of South Carolina and must be officially referred to as the ‘Columbian Mammoth which was created on the sixth day with the other beasts of the field.” Bryant stated, “I think it's very important that we acknowledge the Creator.” GOP’ers passed the bill, with the added nonsense.

”…but something like hundreds of thousands of abortions a year would not even cause you to miss a meal.”

I will ask why you feel a woman making a personal and private decision to undergo a legal medical procedure is any of your business and how does that decision directly impact you life?

Yep, you certainly are a nosy busybody, rightie, GOP’er.

Are any of you paying attention to what is going on in Clark County Nevada??

You're worried that some are not respecting their country?

Right now there are 300 ARMED FED. AGENTS surrounding the BUNDI RANCH with snipers in the mountains above. FEDS have now taken 300 of this rancher's cattle!!!
This IS NOT even Fed. land_BUT, IS STATE LAND!!!!!!!
For all you atheist dem loving liberal people You Need to Wake Up, STOP playing the race/party affiliate card and realize ALL of OUR RIGHTS ARE BEING STRIPPED AWAY day by day!!!!
This situation in Clark County is over the desert tortious that isn't even endangered and are being euthanized to cut down the numbers.
You realize how close proximity we are to Clark County??? I only ask because I know to some it seems far away, think again and try to imagine your own family surrounded by armed fed. agents when you are only guilty of working a ranch that puts red meat on the tables all across America!!!!!!!

And that endangered tortoise Amaryllis speaks of, we now find out, there are so many, they are euthanizing them in Las Vegas.

Endangered? Or an excuse for the BLM feds to move in on state land as they have done all over the country.

This time, the feds have taken 300 cattle, tasered one Bundy son when he went to check on the cattle that they were herding w/govt helicoptors, separating calves from their mothers, running the cattle w/no water.

When the son stopped one truck to check on the well being of the cattle, he got zapped three times, his sister got knocked down.

A thousand defenders of the Bundy's are now there, many more will be there over the weekend.

This isn't about Mr. Bundy's cattle, it's about states rights, overreach by the US govt who have 200 surrounding the ranch, laying on hilltops looking down w/long guns.

Brings back memories doesn't it. Waco, a few years back. Janet Reno, no children of her own, loved children so much so when she heard that the children inside the Waco compound might be being abused, she burnt the whole compound down, killing 80 or so children. The leader walked to town alone every Sat, could easily have been picked up then.

This is all about Harry Reid insider deals, government overreach and every other rancher already run out

I am not sure ANY of the Founders were over-the-top religious fanatics. I think most of them were quite ambivalent about religion in general.
