Kingman Letter: It's time for major gun changes

Is it any wonder that this country is geared toward gun violence? Fanatical gun owners vow that "no one" will ever take their guns away from them. As Charlton Heston, the actor and former head of the NRA once said, "They would have to take his gun out of his cold dead hands."

In other words, he would fight to the death to keep his precious guns. Movies and video games glorify killing. Gangsta-rap promotes killing cops. Young and old alike watch adults getting brutally killed every single day in TV shows, and on the news.

We, as a society, have grown culturally accustomed to this disturbing trend toward violence.

We no longer flinch at the idea of someone being killed unless we happen to know the victim. It's not that we accept violence, but we do expect it, and are not shocked by it anymore because it is an everyday occurrence.

And we do fear violence. That is why there are more than 300 million guns owned by people in this country. However, what we, as a society, are not accustomed to is the mass murder of children. This is something new to us, so we are appalled, shocked, and unwilling to accept any atrocity that is directed toward our children.

The atrocity of the Newtown, Conn., mass murder of 20 children must change our way of thinking. We can no longer be complacent about gun violence.

But arming teachers is not the answer, and it is insulting to the police and our military who train for months to become skilled "shooters."

It is a teacher's job to teach our children. They are not trained "shooters." And to pit a scared, trembling teacher with a handgun against a crazed gunman with perhaps an AR-15 with a high-capacity magazine is ludicrous.

Despite fanatical gun-owners and the NRA's objections, we must have better gun control, and we must tone down the violence on TV, in the movies, music, and video games.

Our children deserve to be safe and live in a country full of love, not one full of guns, hate, violence, and fear.

Wake up, boneheads.
Switzerland has the lowest crime rate per capita in the world.....Might it be due to the fact that one out of every two Swiss citizens are required to carry guns?

There are strict gun laws in Somalia. The average adult seldom lives to be more than 30..Another coincidence? I think not.

Washington DC (our capitol) has banned guns completely. Yet, it's the "Murder Capitol of the USA"...Does anybody see where this is going?

Its not America. Its the human race. Since the beginning of time people have found a need to enjoy violence.

Cavemen cubbed each other to death. Romans fed people to Lions while cheering crowds placed bets. Genocide has been documented in every corner of the planet throughout time. It still goes on all over the world daily.

No law will change Human nature. We KILL and we sometimes enjoy it . As long as the human race is on this planet violence and murder will be commonplace. Its just what we do. Sad but true confirmed by thousands of years of war and murder.

Gun laws , video games, poor parenting all have little to do with something thats part of human nature.

Stanislav Mishin's article at http://www.beforeitsnews.com today is a must-read on the subject. Writing from his Russian perspective, we are informed about gun ownership policies (there were none) under the Tsars, versus leftist-imposed policies. I wouldn't insult the writer by abbreviating his comments here. Put down the coffee, and take a look. His article includes details of U.S. Government support for Lenin against the (armed) White nationalists, who were mostly villagers, farmers.....common people. It's an eye-opener, folks.

@ Fred W. - Lori may SAY she is not against people owning guns, but she IS for restricting certain types of guns, etc. If she is successful, by many people like you believing the same way, this may be the match that starts the era of the next dictator. Deceptive groups out there are counting on our 'giving an inch, and (their) taking a mile'.

To all of you who are saying Lori is against anyone owning a gun, you are totally wrong. Lori said we need BETTER gun control, and I agree with her. Also I am a gun owning BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL as a lot of people call us. As Lori is saying we need to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally impaired, as this gentleman was, and also out of the hands of criminals. Don't ask me how that is going to be done. It has to be addressed by the people who have been schooled and trained to intelligently address these problems. Just saying to do away with all guns is not the answer, as is saying to arm everyone. An armed guard, at a school that could be in jeopardy, for a time, I believe would be the best answer. Just using common sense would answer a lot of these questions

While you have some good points Lori, in general I don't feel the answer is more restrictive gun laws that do nothing but restrict owners who go through the legal means anyways.

Despite what the media portrays the current gun laws are quite comprehensive and deal in common sense, the problem is that there is frequently a lack of enforcement from government officials and law enforcement. There is also a dosconnect between mental health facilities and adequate reporting to the law.

The issues we need to address in my mind are threefold: Better enforcement of current laws, mental health/mental health law, and requiring a licensed dealer to chaperone private sales.

Feinstein proposing national gun registration is unenforcable, would cost a fortune we cannot keep up our national debts now, imagine the law enforcement costs to try and arrest all the violators? I think this is much ado about nothing, she will submit the bill, it will fizzle likely in some committee, never see the day of light! Anyone but me remember the bill submitted to create a national ID card which was touted by the right wing as solution for illegal immigration? I bet a dime to a donut the gun manufacturers are making a killing at the bank with gun sales sky rocketing nation wide!

I am sure that auto correct would substitute a famous rapper's made up name with the proper spelling of a word. Nice try though.

@USMC

You claimed something about the Obama photo and the "dead girl". Have you seen the two pictures comparing the two? I have. Funny enough, these pictures, taken quite some time apart, funny enough, has the little girl wearing the same outfit with the same hairdo. Hmmmm.....photoshop maybe?

“She has already committed TREASON against the U.S. Constitution, and seeks a Foreign U.N. Power to take over the United States. Feinstein's Constitutional Treason is confirmed, and will ignite a Civil War.”

Can you please provide some proof of these amazing assertions? I cannot find anything that actually supports your charges – outside of a couple of right wing loon websites with no provenance.

“First NBC is reporting that there was NO RIFLE in the school, demand that uncut school camera footage be released.”

Where is this NBC report? I cannot locate it anywhere.

“Second In "Photos of Obama " taken before is speech in Newtown , Why is he taking pictures of with a girl that was dead ???”

I apologize, but that sentence makes no sense – on any level. Could you elaborate or translate.’’

“Of course Obamas Kids have guards at their school do yours ?”

I love this pointless argument. The school that Obama’s children attend is a PRIVATE SCHOOL that serves literally hundreds of diplomats, ambassadors, corporate heads and yes, the president’s children. It has been around for many, many years and the parents who send their children to that school pay enormous fees (and no, the taxpayers do not pick up the Obama girls tab) to insure the safety of their children – mostly because of their high profile (you know, like being the leader of the free world?) parents. Now, if other parents are willing to shell out as much as $50,000 a year for their kids to go to school – I am more than willing to let them do that. So, let’s see hands of all of parents who want to pay the KUSD $50,000 a year to see to it their children are highly secure while at school. Of course they would also have to provide secure and guarded transportation for their kids as well.

“Obama Has many armed guards if guards are not needs Lead BY Example MR "President" !!!”

Uhh, you do know that we’ve had presidents assassinated and his protection is … oh never, mind, some people just never get it.

What Feinstein is not telling you is the gun registration process will have a large "Tax" attached to the registration... Registration will not be free. Not only does Feinstein want to destroy the Second Amendment, she wants to make a profit and TAX the hell out of 300 plus million guns...
Feinstein wants to disarm Americans, Hitler STLYE, Criminalizing Law Abiding Citizens to take hundreds of billions of your money in the form of Registration FEE TAXES.
Sign the petition on the White House Website to ban Dianne Feinstein immediately from all Government Offices. She has already committed TREASON against the U.S. Constitution, and seeks a Foreign U.N. Power to take over the United States. Feinstein's Constitutional Treason is confirmed, and will ignite a Civil War.

@My bad

"I don’t think you would want to match paycheck for paycheck."

Since this is the internet, and you are using a screen name, any claim of wealth you have could be nothing more than just BS.

So when exposed and embarrassed for making a very elementary mistake, yur first reaction is to try and one up your critic with a "I'm richer than you" response?

Hate to break it to you Skeezix, but a bullet in the head from a low-priced .22 rifle can kill you just as dead as one from your vast arsenel of pricey military looking ones.

Whos idea of God are we bringing back? The catholic one? The protestant one? Or the Real One from the Bible? The one that never changes, the one that wrote the LAW? Because just about every church has service on SUNday instead of SABBATH. Christ did NOT nail the 10 commandments to his cross, He nailed our death warrant to it, our punishment. The 4th commandment has been cut out and forgotten, and its the ONLY one God commanded us to remember. So if its your idea od God that you want to "bring back" no thank you, I will keep the True God and the True Sabbath and read the True Word of God. So many many things mainstrean christianity is teaching is false. Please read your Bibles! Hebrews 4.

Just to let you gun control freaks know that one of the worst school killings was back in 1927, where some loony tune killed his parents and then blew up a school full of kids..
I guess we better start considering banning anything that will make a bomb and when that is done we can work on knives, pitch forks and anything with a point on it.
I think what we had better do is start protecting our kids and forget about this left wing gun control agenda and get to work right now safe guarding our kids...

@ Maggie

"We have NO evidence that HE was even the shooter, and NO ONE SAW him shoot his mother , now did they ? "

Seriously? The mother was shot with her own gun, which Lanza subsequently used to shoot up the school just a few hours later.

The psychiatrist has to state that Lanza had no violent tendencies. If he admitted that he thought Lanza might do something violent, he would be held partly liable for the massacre.

@Lori
Why yes I would disregard any law that infringes on my Constitutional rights.
As far as my comment, I think it's still not clear, so here is an example.
You come up to me and tell "You shouldn't smoke" my response would be, not your business, don't tell me what I should or shouldn't do. Now if this were to happen in a designated non smoking area, I might say my apologies, and either put it out or move to proper area.
That was my intended meaning. I was just wording it in a way to be less blunt!

"Thank you for proving my point."

I didn't prove your point. You said "Unless the Baretta jams – something they are known for"

Somehow I doubt a design used by almost 30 countries military and LE agencies is prone to jamming.

Any firearm with cheap quality ammo and improper operation can and will jam or misfeed. That is not the fault of the design....it's called operator error.

Give me any semi-auto pistol from a .22 to a .50 and I can make it jam.

Anon anon, i know the republicans cant come to the middle either, and i know that a big part of this economic crisis is bush's fault, but a huge part of it is obamas fault as well, its like he pulled the knife out of a bleeding artery that is taxpayer money and just let the money and socialism flow!! But to suggest any one party is more willing to come to the middle is ludacris, and its being claimed by the most one sided partisan liberal on here LGD

tj denton, not defending the lori comment on republicans and guns but being fair during the crisis of financial melt down republicans could not get their party to agree on bail out, so a bi-partisan effort was cobbled together under a outgoing president Bush jr and his crew, is that example enough for you! I do not think the problem is lack of bi-partisanship today the GOP is in major melt down mode, the GOP in congress is a divided group, the radicals the tea party want to burn the house down, the moderates are pretty much all gone, the elite, intellectual repbulicans are living in terror of being contested on their re-election bids by tea party looney tunes, now us democrats need do nothing but let the GOP eat their own!
