Kingman Letter: Gun Control vs. Society Control?

It was a tragedy the day an elementary school in Connecticut was attacked by a mentally challenged person. I as well as many Americans felt sadness for those families that lost their children and family members. I have been listening to various personalities say we need now more than ever to obtain more gun control laws. Let us not forget that the mother of this young man was so desperate to have a relationship with her son, that she took him to a shooting range. Are you kidding me, the shooter in Colorado who had been seen by mental specialists did a horrific thing and the Fort Hood shooter who, our own government let slip through the cracks. Yes maybe we should have some control, examples would be, anyone with a relative suffering from mental disabilities should not be able to own a firearm, doctors that don't report patients should be held accountable for the misuse of a firearm, or how about making a person show that they have been seen and cleared by a doctor that they are mentally sound. Yes, there are things that need to be looked at, but what about the person driving and texting, how about the doctors not diagnosing a patient with a disease that has terminal consequences, because they just want to give a pill. Yes, there are many things in society we need to do to have tragedies not happen. Guns are not the only things that kill if education is not sufficient; we need to see the whole picture.

The problem with being for gun-control is, you never know who will ultimately benefit from your views. It is hard to know whose side you are on sometimes. See this.

“About as facinating as people who are driven to embellish or entirely invent a military history on the internet, right Rambo?”

I wouldn’t know about Rambo’s military history (just what I’ve seen in films), but there may be a similarity to people who show up on the internet and claim to write a check to cover $2.5K in taxes each year. It is odd how no one is poor or an abject failure on the internet

Oh, wait, that quote above was an insult directed at me, wasn’t it? I am so sorry my time in the military, along with my other success in life makes you feel so … well inadequate. Perhaps you should have made better choices earlier in your life. And also understood that being in the military is not like being in prison, and I quote your, “served your time” as an example.

@ AN
I, of the majority, would rather urinate on myself and have the CHANCE of protecting myself or my family from deadly force. That chance would be more likely to result in saving a life than to wait for the police to come to my rescue. BTW: From what I hear, there were quite a few seasoned vets who urinated AND defecated on themselves in terrifying times of battle. Why should I, or they, be ashamed, when acts of valor are born out of our most frightening moments?

"anyone with a relative suffering from mental disabilities should not be able to own a firearm"

Poor example. The way you wrote if someone has a relative with a mental disability who does not live with them, you could deny them the right to have a firearm.

"about making a person show that they have been seen and cleared by a doctor that they are mentally sound"

I have seen this one a lot lately, who pays for it? How long is it good for? And to whom would you "show" it to? The government when you register whatever weapon they are still allowing you to purchase?

Try thinking before typing out grand ideas for controlling people.

"The one thing I find fascinating are the keyboard cowboys and their bravado about “protecting” their homes and families. Most of these fools have never had to face down a bad guy......"

About as facinating as people who are driven to embellish or entirely invent a military history on the internet, right Rambo?

“Again, you make assumptions about the other people posting on this board.”

Perhaps, but then many of the usual suspects here regularly make assumptions – always incorrect – about me, so I guess it’s fair that I do the same.

And no matter how much you go on about the wonderful gun owners the majority would still urinate themselves and would be unable to shoot a “bad guy.”

"If you search the archives of various news sources, (and you'll have to be persistent since some of the liberal leaning news outlets don't like to report on these cases), you'll find many examples of homeowners who have stopped intruders in their homes using fire arms."

To play devil's advocate here, you can find about as many stories of homeowners who have been shot with their own guns too.

"The one thing I find fascinating are the keyboard cowboys and their bravado about “protecting” their homes and families. "

Again, you make assumptions about the other people posting on this board.

My assumption would be that the majority of the people, who have invested hundreds of dollars on a fire arm, are responsible gun owners who regularly go out and practice shooting their guns so that they are familiar and comfortable with them. And that they are ready and able to use them if the situation arises.

If you search the archives of various news sources, (and you'll have to be persistent since some of the liberal leaning news outlets don't like to report on these cases), you'll find many examples of homeowners who have stopped intruders in their homes using fire arms. They have either scared the intruders away, held them until the police arrived, or in some cases shot them dead.

Since these legitimate and successful uses of fire arms in the home don't help the liberal gun control scenario, you don't see these stories plastered across the front page.

People are not afraid to use their guns to protect themselves and their families.

Is that an assault shotgun?

“anson, youre right on this one. gun laws and bans do accomplish things.”

Thank you for the acknowledgment.

As I have stated in many of the nonsensical threads here about guns – changes are coming to the laws (and no, I do not know what those changes will encompass) no matter how much we rant on about them. But I am more than confident that the wild hysteria of, “OBAMA IS GOING TO TAKE MY GUNS!” will not take place.

The one thing I find fascinating are the keyboard cowboys and their bravado about “protecting” their homes and families. Most of these fools have never had to face down a bad guy and many of them would become immediately incontinent, drop their weapon and have the bad guy pistol whip them with it.

When I am asked about the best weapon for “home protection” I always say a shotgun. Just the sound of racking it scares the crap out of almost anyone and if they stay in the house, just point it down the hallway and fire. No aiming, no missing – just crime scene clean-up. It is amazing how many people tell me they could never do that. So what makes them think they can do anything with a handgun?

Changes are coming. Be prepared.

anson, youre right on this one. gun laws and bans do accomplish things. take detroit for example, extremely hard to obtain a firearm permit, and their mayor has stated that if you visit detriot, you will be doing so at your own risk because the police cannot protect you. and assault rifle bans prevent law abiding citizens from obtaining assault rifles, while being unable to remove them from the hands of criminals, thus giving the criminal the upper hand in a bad situation. so, anson, you are totally correct.

This pro-gun and anti-gun argument is not partisan, one can find a equal number of republican, democrat and independent gun owners, anyuone trying to make it a liberal or conservative issue is beating a dead horse and that dead horse is not even twitching anymore! Reagan was shot with a cheap revolver known as a saturday night special, prompted the assault weapons ban for a decade, which they sunset, as to taking 2nd amendment rights of gun owners with mentally ill relatives that one is a can of worms, how exactly do you take a right from someone who has violated no laws, is not mentally ill? I do believe some folks have more silly ideas than common sense! Next year some new crisis will exist, might be social, international, financial who knows but this story will be history soon!

You are right about everything! Even tho there are thousands of laws on the books now concerning guns, they are not properly enforced.
What we need is for the left to get off this gun control chant and start thinking about the safety of our schools right now.
Of course they say they don't want our schools to look like armed fortresses, but who gives a darn what they look like as long as the kids are safe...evidently their agenda's are more important.
If we all got together and forget political agenda's we could make our kids safe tomorrow, instead of waiting years for nothing that works.

Good points, people, especially liberals don't seem to be able to comprehend that "gun laws" do nothing, Washington D.C. has had the strictest gun laws for decades and the highest murder rate. I have said before, the cause of the crime needs to be addressed not the tool used in the crime.
