Reader Letter: Guns do kill people

I recently posted my support for common sense gun legislation on Facebook. A friend immediately responded with the NRA mantra, "Guns don't ....'

I reminded him of the crazy man who attacked primary school children in China and wounded 22 students and one adult Dec. 14, 2012. There were no fatalities.

If this deranged attacker had used a gun instead of a knife, there probably would have been 23 dead people in the Henan province village of Chengping, China, and still he would say "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

My concern is, people with semi-automatic guns with extra-capacity magazines kill more people than people without guns.

“I was no longer impressed with your articles and the Route 66 radio show,..”

Good for you. However thousands of people do like the Route 66 Radio and it has been syndicated in numerous markets all across the nation. As to how I do the show that has also been praised. About my articles – if my writing was not popular I would not have had hundreds of articles published around the world over the past quarter of a century, along with seven books currently in print and five others that are now out of print.

“Then you would mention all kinds of useless non historical information such as how great some new restaurant dive was,…”

The Route 66 Roadies of the world love hearing about the “dives” and where they can get some good old American Road Food and they respect my recommendations – you know, places like Mr D’s in Kingman.

“… Rolling Stones album, who are a very evil group.”

The Rolling Stones, “Very evil?” OMG, now we get exactly where you are coming from!

“Bottom line.......10 bucks or a hundred bucks, what makes you think anyone has to provide you with material to be used for your own profit for free?”

It is obvious that you have never worked in the publishing industry. The majority of museums provide material to journalists in exchange for credit lines and positive mentions that will result in more visitors to the museum. This is a standard industry practice and has nothing to do with the profit making of a publication. BTW – it is irrelevant to me if a museum provides material or not, I get paid, period.

”Pretty cheapskate behavior for the financial success you claim to be.”

Again, without the poster understanding the publishing industry this comment is … well, you know.

”Sinc3 I do not have access to past copies of the obscure magazine,…”

Clever, but with no substance as usual.

“But since it is an effort on your part to CYA, I'll pass on taking your word for it.”

And that is your right, much like how you will not provide facts on the things you consistently post here leading me to not believe them.

Did you remind him of all the "prevented" tragedies because someone DID have a gun?

Probably not huh? Why you. Noone else reports it either. That's because the press is run by obamabots - robots who cannot think independently unless obama tells them what to say.

Bob Moore said on a previous thread, "Nope and I never said that it did."

Yeah, that's for sure. There is a whole lot of the socialist agenda of your Democrat Party that you do not want tell us about, nor want us to find out. Just like Nancy Pelosi infamously said in her snickering, condescending tone of voice, "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in It." The liberal-biased news media would have never let a Republican get away with saying something so blatantly corrupt like that!

Here is a suggestion: How about submitting your own letter to the editor for a change since you have so much time to post comments everyday just to stir up ire by insulting everyone's intelligence.

By the way, even before I figured out on my own who you really were and political ideology aside, I was no longer impressed with your articles and the Route 66 radio show, which in retrospect was very boring because you would talk so slow with sayings like “ah, those were the good old days” and then to fill air time by playing old hit songs for content filler with added dead air space at the end until the next commercial.

Then you would mention all kinds of useless non historical information such as how great some new restaurant dive was, and even more ridiculous non interesting items such as how great it is that the owner of Cool Springs has every Rolling Stones album, who are a very evil group.

By the way, it is not a little known fact that the song "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson is from the "Honeysuckle Rose" movie soundtrack. That information was also stated on the original record label.

“… recalling that there was an article written by Paul Taylor in 1994 about the Mohave Museum of History and Arts. And if you doubt I was there (as you previously questioned) then how do you think I was able to recall that occasion and provide that source so quickly?”

What does an article supposedly written by Paul Taylor in 1994 have to do with my experience at the museum in 1990 when I was working on an article for The Mother Road Journal?

I should point out that as the former Executive Editor for Route 66 Magazine I have been involved with the magazine since its inception in 1993 and have each issue of the magazine. I can find no articles referencing the museum by Paul Taylor in any 1994 issue. Perhaps I missed it, so please provide exactly what issue it appeared in. Thank you.

And hand guns in inner cities are by far the worse. And your example cited, as described by you, was "crazy" and "deranged". You people are going to have to start realizing that we do not have a gun problem, we have a serious social ill problem.

“Sure you did. You're such a success story that you had to write a comment at this website whining about being expected to pay for photos of material you wanted to use in a private project of yours.”

Actually it was for world wide publication that I had been told by the Chamber of Commerce I could use the photos at no cost with the use of a credit line.

“And then you had the nerve to claim the amount you were going to be charged was 90 bucks more than it actually was.”

Nope, I was told the charge would be $100 per photograph and as to where you got the other information I have no idea.

”Back on the war hero schtick again? Ho-hum. That sort of thing is all over the net”

It is? I had no idea my military service “is all over the net.” How amazing considering I was just a guy serving his nation and never looked upon myself as being a “war hero.” I served with pride, unlike some who looked upon their military duty as being in prison with the “I served my time” comment.

You personal animus towards me is just sad.

No, you may not.

However, feel free to call me a law-abiding American veteran who served his nation with pride (not “served my time”), who honors and pledges allegiance to our flag (but leaves out the stupid “Under God” nonsense) and has had a successful life and multiple careers thanks to education provided by the taxpayers of this great nation (that in turn allowed me to make great sums of money and pay back the nation's largesse through taxes), appreciates the benefits I receive through Social Security and Medicare, does not look upon the less fortunate of our country as “parasites” and would never consider hiding my money off-shore or send American jobs to Communist China.

Yes, you may call me an Average American!

I found a wonderful example of what gun grabbing Leftists consider "common sense gun laws.

In Washington State Senate democrats have now submitted a real gem, Senate Bill 5737. It would, of course, ban those scary military looking "assault weapons" that always have their panties in a bunch. The article had this:

"Responding to the Newtown school massacre, the bill would ban the sale of semi-automatic weapons that use detachable ammunition magazines. Clips that contain more than 10 rounds would be illegal."

"But then, with respect to the thousands of weapons like that already owned by Washington residents, the bill says this:"

“In order to continue to possess an assault weapon that was legally possessed on the effective date of this section, the person possessing shall … safely and securely store the assault weapon. The sheriff of the county may, no more than once per year, conduct an inspection to ensure compliance with this subsection."

The article continues:

"In other words, come into homes without a warrant to poke around. Failure to comply could get you up to a year in jail."

It's a democrat gun controllers dream. The bill bans all semi automatic weapon that use a magazine. I am betting that even in WA state it will not pass, but they are trying there, and Leftists will try "reasonable gun lawsl" like that wherever they can.

"Once again I must object to your use of the tired and ridiculous term “gun grabbers,” particularly in reference to myself. As I have pointed out to you numerous times I am armed most of the time, I own multiple weapons and carry multiple CWP’s."

While I really don't give a rats *** what you object to, how about a compromise? Can call you "Groveler"?

I came across it in an essay on the 2nd Amendment. The author was discussing concealed carry permits and used it to describe anyone who grovels and asks the governments permission to do something they already have a right to do in the first place.

I think someone who actually brags about having groveled "multiple" times for permission from the government certainly fits his description.

A NPR linked story is a chain e-mail? Good one AN.

"unsubstantiated BS"

Sort of like unsubstantiated Viet Nam veteran claims on this website. Hey, the internet is full of them.

"I own multiple weapons and carry multiple CWP’s."

Might be true, might also just be "unsubstantiated BS"

"Once again I must object to your use of the tired and ridiculous term “gun grabbers,” particularly in reference to myself."

There are many, many leftist gun grabbers who have the "guns for me, but not for thee" mindset. You may be just one more of them.

And if I had used a link to FOX news or a conservative website, you would be here squaking in your usual parrot-like leftist way that the source was unacceptable and nothing but right-wing lies.

I notice you gun grabbers are not arguing the facts of story. You would think that a place with such strict gun laws would be virtually free of gun crimes.

Guess they need even stricter laws.

Do you all notice how liberals act like they are better than conservatives, smarter than conservatives and all they do is talk down people that make realistic and factual statements.

It is amazing how history has repeated itself over and over and the liberals can't see that America is following history and turning into what we fled from in England to begin with.

I'm sorry if I belittled the liberals in my posting . I don't want to be called a hypocrite and be in the same class as most liberals.

Lori Gabriel-Dane...thanks for the lesson on why things are called what they're called. Too bad you do not know the difference between homicide and murder. You said "The person behind a gun, IS deliberately trying to kill someone, that is why it's called "murder."" The person who kills an innocent person commits "murder." i.e. abortion doctors.
The person that kills someone in self-defense or protecting others does not commit murder, but homicide (justifiable). There is a difference between killing and murder. Perhaps if you knew that you would be in a better position to have an opinion on guns, and the control of them.

This ones just for you, falsely claimed from Chicago resident and KDM's #1 obama fan. (I still laugh at how Chicago magically became a 98% small lake town many MANY miles from Chicago, lol).

In obama's hometown of Chicago, the place with strict gun contol laws, here is what a great job the cops are doing with arrests in
shootings.

"But in Chicago, where homicides and shootings are up significantly this year, that old code is leaving a rising number of violent crimes unsolved. Chicago Police Department statistics show arrests are being made in about 30 percent of shooting homicides, while close to 80 percent of nonfatal shootings are going unsolved."

Here's the link:

http://www.npr.org/2012/11/13/163242604/in-chicago-violence-soars-and-witnesses-go-silent

Maybe they just need even more gun control laws.

And if that wasn't funny enough, this just in from the the "you can't make this **** up" file. A story headlined "Chicago Police Want 12% Pay Raise"

Oh, they also want a bonus of 3k for having to live in the city and to pay less for their health insurance.

Because, as shown in the first story, they are doing such a great job there.

“You are talking about a very small percentage of ‘bad’ people, not the millions of good people who own all types of guns.”

Do you feel the same about the small percentage of drunks (in comparison to the millions of good people who do not drink and drive) who kill people daily? Personally, having had my first wife murdered by a drunk driver I advocate some really serious actions towards drunk drivers that I feel would appall you.

“Do you want armed guards in schools? I sure do.”

I don’t because it is a senseless overreaction. However, if you are willing to support the cost of armed professionals at schools I am all for it – however, I refuse to fund any such action. It is odd how willing people are to demand such nonsense and yet whine about the “cost of schools.”

Heroin is illegal, so is crack, and cocaine, Now you want to make guns illegal, so that addict coming thrue my broken door, has a gun, and I don't. Chicago has very harsh gun controll laws, and the highest gun fatalleties. Looks like that law realy works.
Now look at the country with no land boders, Australia. They took away all guns. The Bad guys still have guns, and crime is up. The bad guys aren't affraid, of the unarmed, familey or buisness owner.
Fact: Most homicides are blunt force trauma. And NO you can't take my hammer, ball bat, or short piece of pipe away from me either.
