Reader Letter: Commonality

Southwest experiences sub-freezing temperatures. Freezing storms ravage many parts of the country. Temperatures plummet in Midwest and Northeast. Winter storm Nemo pounds New England. Thousands stranded without services. Dozens perish.

It seems Al Gore and Chicken Little have more in common than just looks.

@AN
Have you looked at any of the various definitions of "wiped out"? At least as it applies in this case, not surfing.

Here's one..."To destroy or be destroyed completely". Eradicate can also be exchanged for "destroy completely".

It has not been "destroyed completely" therefore it has not been "wiped out".

Is it that hard to understand? Why are you defending a mis-statement by LGD anyway?

Have you ever admitted that you are in error in your life? Somehow, I think not.

“As you often say (paraphrasing)...facts are important not opinion.”

I did not express an opinion, I provided a fact that fewer than one thousand people, out of the 1,700,000,000 people on the earth will be affected by polio each year. And then for some bizarre reason you bring up measles and whopping cough that have nothing whatsoever to do with the discussion.

Admit it, you were fundamentally wrong and no amount of spin is going to change the fact that you were fundamentally wrong!

"The term eradicated is a bit hyperbolic since polio still exists in the world. But historically for all intents and purposes the disease has been effectively stamped out."

Then she should have said "effectively wiped out". The FACT is that thousands are still affected by it. As are millions more by such things as measles and whooping cough....which could be "effectively wiped out" by the same type of simple vaccines. It's estimated that over 1 million die from those diseases. Just because it doesn't occur here in the US very often, should we just not worry about it?

As you often say (paraphrasing)...facts are important not opinion.

Dr. Hurd - and in South Africa, you had Thabo Mbeki, who as President of a supposedly advanced country (it WAS advanced when the African National Congress won the CIA's raffle prize of support over PAC and Chief Buthelezi) claimed that AIDS had been inflicted upon South Africa's black population by witch doctors in league with Western intelligence agencies. Let's spread the disdain around widely here.

It should be noted that the only parts of the world that are still transmitting wild virus polio do so because of radical religious fundamentalists who insist that the vaccine is poison. These Muslim versions of the tea party have recently taken to murdering public health workers trying to save the lives of children.

"Sorry, I always refute her points. She demands something be done about global warming. I respond by pointing out that talk is cheap when as a non-taxpayer the cost of the feds solutions will not be costing her."

If you consider twisting a person's words and taking the low road instead of presenting facts "refuting" then you are correct. Somehow, the rest of us in the real world know different.

And as you always tell others, you can claim whatever you want to claim on the internet. Just keep those checks coming from Obama every month, right?

And sorry, but my tax return gets sent in every year with nice checks.

“Just a note...polio has not been eradicated. Check the facts.”

The term eradicated is a bit hyperbolic since polio still exists in the world. But historically for all intents and purposes the disease has been effectively stamped out.

Beginning in 1910 there was a dramatic increase around the world of polio cases (affecting hundreds of thousands of children and adults each year) and large epidemics became common place during the summer months in cities (polio is a viral disease spread person to person). Even one of our greatest presidents had been stricken with the disease.

In the 1950s research led to polio vaccines (both Salk and Sabin) and resulted in an amazing drop in the numbers affected by polio. And today there are a less than one thousand cases of polio reported annually around the world that currently has a population of just over 7,100,000,000. That means for all intents and purposes polio has been eliminated.

I first became convinced that the global environment was warming about 20 years ago by a very simple experiment. How deep is the top of the permafrost?

"Evidence for warming and thawing of discontinuous permafrost in Alaska" T. E. Osterkamp and J. C. Jorgenson in Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 10, Issue 1, pages 17–37, January/March 1999.

Prof. Osterkamp thinks that the isolating effect of deeper snow cover, also climate change driven, is more directly important than direct air temperature warming. Obviously, they are both connected to climate change. ("Causes of warming and thawing permafrost in Alaska" T. E. Osterkamp, Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, Volume 88, Issue 48, pages 522–523, November 2007

Al Gore and Obama caused the latest weather pattern? I found this so funny, if this is not proof of how silly the Obama/democrat haters have devolved to nothing else explains it so well, do they have some mystical indian weather dance or is it some african kenyan witch doctor voodoo that they use to cause these weather issues? I venture a bet if one keeps track and looks back in history bad weather has come and gone and does not matter whose political favorites, governments etc. are in power or not!

although i do not believe in global warming whatsoever...whats wrong with wanting to take care of the planet we live on? i think we should all do our part in trying to limit the trashing of our planet so my son has clean air and a nice environment to live. who doesnt want that for their children? on the other hand i dont think it should be used as an excuse to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to made up projects and research so liberals can get rish off embezzled funds. repubs get fat off oil and liberals get fat off cleaning it up. i think it comes down to individuals, wising up and realizing that were trashing our surroundings and wasting our resources.

I also can not understand a $300+ heating bill...unless someone lives in an all electric home and doesn't account for heating water, cooking, etc.

Wow....you have a car now. This from one who once bragged here specifically about NOT having a car. Guess you're a sell out when it suits you to be.

Large heating bill. I live in a 3 bedroom house and have never paid in half that much in the coldest month of the winter. You've got a real problem.

Global Warming? Like I said, if it is indeed a man-made problem and solutions must be paid for, as a admitted non-taxpayer the cost means nothing to you at all.

"First of all, I resent you calling me a "geezer."

I stand correcteed. I'll be sure to use the gender correct "geezerette" in the future.

"You seem to be under the impression that you are better than anyone else,....."

Not at all, just some people.

By the way, I really don't care what you resent. Call a waaaaaahmbulance

The 47%? Just goes to show all the freeloaders flocked to ovomit. And as I believe Margaret Thatcher said: Socialism works, until you run out of people to pay for it.

LOL

Ok, so prove she does not pay taxes. For some reason, if she does not, I would suggest she is not the only one. Try looking in the mirror. LOL

Also, I am not defending her at all, I happen to not agree with her on almost everything, but my point stands, resorting to insults when you cannot refute a point makes a person seem small.

"it has been wiped out, thanks to that one person."

And if he had been working for some fed agency instead of the University of Pittsburg funded by what later bercame known as the March of Dimes..........we would still be waiting for a cure.

One man, without the govt. C'mon Lori, admit it, that really bugs you. LoL

However Lori, before you put him up for sainthood (oooooops sorry, I forgot your a sometimes athiest), his ethics at that time are questionable.

It is often trumpeted that he injected the vaccine in himself and his family. What is ommitted is the fact that he first tested it on children in two facilities, the D.T. Watson Home for Crippled Children, and the Polk State School for the retarded and feeble-minded. Since it was 1952, cosent forms were not even close to being the norm. Why those facilities? His test subjects could not refuse.

A great accomplishment and a great man, but not without very serious flaws in his ethics.

To Frank Lee Speaking:

First of all, I resent you calling me a "geezer." You seem to be under the impression that you are better than anyone else, and that is simply not true. With your self-adoring attitude and your hatred for everyone and everything else, you must be a very unhappy person. Your only expertise on any subject is to insult people. And, for your information, I pay all of my bills, on time, without the need of any assistance from anyone. It's true that I no longer pay Federal Income Tax because my husband and I are retired and on S.S.. But we paid Federal and state taxes for more than 50 years. Whenever we purchase groceries or anything else, we continue to pay a tax on those things.

I'm sure that when you become eligible to retire, if you're not already, you will not turn down your S.S. benefits, then you will be at the same station of life that I am.

Still harping on that 47%, eh? The Republicans lost an election because of that way of thinking. So keep right on thinking that way and we will continuouly have Democratic presidents as long as the Tea Party types have the attitude they have about almost half the population.

And one other thing... my husband bought me a car for Christmas, so I AM paying for the high price of gasoline, the high price of electricity, groceries, doctor and hospital bills, water and garbage, etc., and last month's heating bill was a whopping $323.00. AND THEY WERE PAID WITHOUT ANY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS. So don't suggest that I don't pay for anything because I'm on the S.S. benefits that I worked a long time for and paid into for all those years.

(30) .

Neither do you, and I am not defending her, only pointing out a resort to insults when a point cannot be refuted.

As to your quote...all I can say is "Hello black kettle, this is me pot"....pretty much sums up what you just said. LOL

One last thing. When she says:

"And if you want to call me gullible, go right ahead. I'd rather be safe than sorry!"

It is very easy for her to do so. Many of the costs will be passed on to her. Gas prices rising? No problem, she brags about not owning a car. Higher taxes? She does not pay them. Higher costs for electricity? No problem, she will demand a program to subsidize geezers like her.

Costs of govt. programs are no problem for her because like all of the 47%, she has no skin in the game.

"Another example of someone who could not refute and argument, so they resort in insults."

Since when is stating things that person gas said "insults"?

Did you miss this line of hers?

"And if you want to call me gullible, go right ahead. I'd rather be safe than sorry!"

And consider, this is also from the person who said she would give up all of her rights and freedom (except for her right to vote....like she would get to keepn that. lol) for a "less violent world".

Pick who to defend more carefully.
