Letter: Opinion page needs the right stuff

Mr. Thurlow, in today's paper, May 9, 2013, the Opinion page could not be more liberal. Respectfully, sir, Susan Estrich and Joe Conason!

Most people I talk to in Kingman tend to be conservative. We vote conservative.

Do you really think that they want to read those liberal opinions? I notice the paper seems to be turning in that direction. I hope not. Thank you.

James H. Wessling

"If Rick doesn't, I will. Since all your comments come out on the "liberal" side of the issue, I would have to call you a liberal...not an independent."

Of course you would, because I take down the lies posted here by others, and it disagrees with your opinions, so you have to apply a label and try to degrade a person.

“I have no choice but to back the conservative side of the current issues, being pushed down our throats, every day!”

NO! You do have the choice to resist the conservative claptrap, “being pushed down our throats, every day.” Stand up for what is right and stand against the evils that permeate the Teabagger Right! Step away from the darkside of conservatism and embrace the light of progressiveness.

I am registered as a PND to vote, which is probably considered a "middle of the road" voter. However, with what this Obama administration is doing to the country...I have no choice but to back the conservative side of the current issues, being pushed down our throats, every day!

Way to preach hatred and disdain for others opposing views Rick! Being an independent who does not subscribe to either label you just threw out, how about putting a label on me?

I do believe the writer of this letter must not read it daily, since on most given days right wing slant is majority views, letters to editor are almost every other day from the resident unofficial columnist Linda Athens who goes from Birtherism conspiracies to now Benghazi conspiracy theory! Mohave County is run by republican party, no wonder they cannot pay their fire departments, seem to be sued in civil court constantly for not being able to manage their employee's fairly! I do believe only when they end up making such a big mess as the national republican party has done will any changes occur!

You are kidding!! Do you seriously believe that you are the only person on the planet entitled to an opinion. You are selfish, self centered and egotistical. Get over yourself, you share this world with others!!! If you want to tell people what to think maybe you need to move to a communist counrty.

I thought that the opinion pages were actually starting to make sense. So it must be true that the Miner is getting more liberal. Thanks, Miner! Bout time someone starts dealing in reality.

Ahh, Jim............now and then the newspaper has to "throw a bone" to the liberals. How else can the "conservatives" do anything if they don't know what the "libs" are thinking.

In defense of the opinions expressed in the Miner, well, I too am extremely conservative, the far right of the far right, as it were. However, having opposition opinions is a good thing, and well within the proper functioning of a Constitutional Republic, such as the United States is meant to be. Any healthy society needs a wide range of opinions and viewpoints, else the possibility, nay the inevitabilty of a theocracy is soon upon us. Without dissenting opinions discussion and critical thinking is soon discarded, and any possibility of advancement as a society or functioning country is diminished.
By all means, hold onto your beliefs tightly, but never so tightly as to obviate any dissent.

"Do you really think that they want to read those liberal opinions"

Actually we do. The old, stuck in the past lifestyle residents, are slowly dying off. The younger, open to new ideas crowd, are replacing them. I guess it`s who you associate with. I have no trouble finding people here with moderate views.

Some balance is needed on the editorial page. We don't need another Faux news on these pages. The area is more moderate than the loud mouths like to think it is. Too many blindly vote if the claim they are "conservatives" , even against their own best interests. So many people here would be in very bad circumstances if they had to actually live the conservative anti government principles they profess.

James,
This paper is leaning liberal? Are you joking? Do you want every non conservative view/opinion banned?
This paper is so far right, it almost falls over. I think what you want is Communism. Only print what the party wants. This paper should let everyone voice their opinion, but it doesn't.

This paper will pick and choose what opinions it wants to print and what not to print. If you have a disparaging remark about what conservatives have lied about, it's never going to get printed.

"Most people I talk to in Kingman tend to be conservative. We vote conservative."
That's true if the only people you want to talk to have conservative views. Most conservatives I've met refuse to listen or even talk to you unless believe what they believe. So yes, everyone you know thinks like you,
looks like you and acts like you.

Coming from an area that had an liberal newspaper, I would hate to see it too but on the other hand, lefty viewpoints are so easy to destroy.
They use emotion rather than logic and like their thin skinned clown in the White House, it's easy to get them riled up.

Well Mr. Wessling,

Thats why its an opinion page, where citizens can write their opinions. That is their right. And although ill argue to the death with a liberal, that doesnt change the fact that they have every right to be a liberal, or do the same with me. Its called the first amendment. So im not sure what your point is here, do you not want people to have different opinions than yours?

Yeah you wouldn’t want any alternative ideas in the newspaper to break through the right wing media bubble that so many in this area seem to live in. Heck even Faux News at least pretends to be “fair and balanced” by putting on the token liberal now and then so Bill O’Reilly can scream at him. But you don’t even want that. Talk about being closed minded.

In addition to conservatives and liberals, this area is also home to moderates. If you would like a conservative paper, you certainly have it in the Miner. I can't imagine how more right wing a paper could get. It is sad that people have to go to out of town news sources to get information about Kingman in general. Maybe if the Miner quite being a shill for the Republican party and reported actual news events here, it could work for everyone.

Sorry James but your not going to like the future very much either. As the older generations die off your conservative advantage is dwindling. Most Americans are not conservative, if they were President Obama would not have been elected again. So you can believe what ever you wish but that doesn't make it a fact. The reason the paper seems to be turning liberal is because people are fed up with the BS that is spewed by this obvious so called conservative newspaper. Just like Fox noise your point of view is anything but fair and balanced. The problems we face as a country need attention but both parties have become so divided nothing is getting done. I blame Fox news for most of this but both sides are guilty. We can't move this country ahead if both sides simply defend their point of view. What we need to do is become conservative liberals Americans. What I mean by that is most people are liberal on social issues and conservative when it comes to waste and mismanagement in govt. For example we can't vote down a bill for new tanks when the Army says that they don't need or want them because some politician wants those jobs in their district. Yes we need to cut spending on many things in govt. but social programs are not the place to start. The Republicans main focus is to protect the rich. If they needed protecting they wouldn't be doing as well as they are while it gets harder everyday for working families. The rich don't keep or reinvest their money in America they keep in offshore accounts so they don't have to pay taxes. And then they call themselves patriots and fund the Tea party.
