Kingman Letter: Who pays for county raises? We do

This is in response to Marylee Hall's letter to the editor in June 11 Daily Miner ["Raise Overdue"].

I do not doubt that county workers deserve a raise! Most working Americans deserve a raise. Even if we didn't deserve one, we would still think we did, so believing one deserves a raise is a normal state of being.

The problem here is that government workers are paid with taxes that are levied on the private sector. The private sector, outside of the stock market, is not doing well. Most private sector workers have not received raises in the last seven years either. To expect those who have not received raises in the private sector to pay extra so that government employees can get a raise is grossly unfair.

Ideally, government raises should be tied to gross domestic product growth, but I know of no measurement for that in a city or a county. Since that is probably impossible, the next best thing would be to base them on increases in tax revenue that comes not by increasing the percent of taxes but comes because of more commerce. That would give an incentive to government workers to be business-friendly.

If something is not done to help government workers understand the source of their income, Atlas may shrug.

I have to agree with Chuey. It's been just as long, if not longer, for some of the people from the private sector who have had a pay raise. Please explain what sets the county apart from the rest of us that makes them anymore deserving of a pay raise at the taxpayers expense. I think the county workers need to suck it up just like everybody else, at least until the economy improves.

Unfortunately, there are those in our communities who believe that if a person is employed by a "government entity" that person is overpaid, lazy, or doesn't care who is paying for their employment. It is not fair, or right, to bundle all people together. I have been there, and I have seen and experienced all of it.

Many "public" employees have not seen an increase in 5 years. Like the rest of the population, they contribute to the economy, have bills to pay, and obligations to meet. They don't drive around in luxury vehicles. In fact, they, like everyone else, are trying to figure out how to get their used vehicles fixed, how to pay medical bills, how to afford gas to get to work.

Staffing in many areas has been dramatically cut on the lower levels. These are front line positions. Please remember that county employees serve the entire county and not just one community.

So before people start barking about pay increases for public employees, think about the people who fill those vital positions.

@Chuey Tidbittle,

TRUST me government workers Do understand where their pay comes from! They pay taxes just like those in the private sector and help
those in the private sector holdup all the others who aren't paying taxes. Their cost of living also goes up just like those in the private sector does! If not for all the waste in government spending at all levels giving the workers a raise would not be a hardship and maybe you in the "private" sector wouldn't resent so much government workers receiving a raise.

The people who work for the county do the things that keep the roads and buildings we use every day in useable order. They work full time and many of them are out in the weather while working. They deserve a raise and we should be glad to see our tax dollars allocated for that over other things that are less important.
