Letter: Another dose

So Obama departs recently on an all-expenses taxpayer-paid $100 million vacation to Africa.

Meanwhile, at a cost of $75,000 a week, the White House tours remain sequestered to the very tax-paying vacationers who footed Obama's extravagant getaway.

Have another dose of what you voted for, America!

“hes the greatest president this nation has ever seen!”

I would not go that far, but I am pleased to see that you have finally come to recognize the accomplishments of President Obama (capital “O” deliberate).

“Oh, back to talking about the infallible god of the liberals!!”

Actually the God of the liberals is our heavenly father.

“am I right or what anny boy??”

Well, outside of recognizing the accomplishments of President Obama you were – as always – very wrong. Sorry. Try again.

@AN.... Look - I wrote the Miner separately to apologise here for a mistake I probably made, in thinking that "Schmo" (who writes here) may be you under a different moniker. Sometimes you never know here. Schmo is a Jewish name. So under the premise that LA was mocking you, I joined in, in a manner which I intended to be supportive of you, albeit with black humour. I'll be more careful in the future. After what you have been through in life, you are certainly entitled to your world view. Linda needs to understand the role which belongs to the Creator to influence a person's understanding of themself and history.

I made a a boo-boo. I was presuming that Linda Athens was masking comments to Bob Moore while addressing "Schmo", who posts comments here. That name is generally understood to be Jewish and mimics the name of a Jewish boy in the film I mentioned. This is one of about three mistakes I recall making this year - one of the others was addressing comments intended for Dr. G.S. Hurd to the doctor who actually deals with local inmates downtown. But I do take responsibility for my errors, few that they be. We all have heard the saying "no runs, no hits, no errors" about the person who sits out the action on the bench. I'm daily tempted that way. But the action involves such wretched Government (and some corporate and individual) presumptions that we will do just that, that I am obligated to remain in the field, despite the (hopefully rare) dropping the ball. My apologies. I would not deliberately cheapen - without good reason - the discourse here. And even when I have felt the need to cheapen discourse here, it's to highlight how others have, against what is at stake.

As a Jew and always a gentlemen I am slightly offended by your comments – but then, that’s my problem. And I would have held the fence so she could escape while I remained to draw the attention of the dogs. Thank you for asking.

for $100 million, I hope he made time to stop and have lunch with one of the thousands of white Afrikaaner families who have been made impoverished due to the criminal discriminatory policies of the African National Congress. And for $100 million, I hope Obama paid for the lunch.

@AN.....oh-so-briefly, I had this image of you and Linda Athens sitting together in the Bergen-Belsen shower room, surrounded by adults (you DO understand the film reference here, from "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" by Harvey Weinstein's Miramax Films?), moments before Zyklon B began to be pumped in. But then, you were probably a gentleman even as a kid, and wouldn't have invited her to crawl under the fence and go roaming around.....would you?

Schmo:

Sorry, wrong. Sequester was squarely on obama's head. Look it up.

Odd timing, the Africa trip, don't you think? Perhaps to take the country's mind off the six or eight or ten scandals swirling about obama.
And diplomatic? Ha! What a joke. If he needed r and r, he still has his other vacation in the NE coming up soon.

It just stinks when a POTUS always and forever puts himself ahead of scandals and wars. Egypt that he helped along falling apart, terrible job problems in America...and suddenly he has to blow $100 mill.

You libs will fall for anything. What a terrible pity...for the rest of us.

Wasn't it Benghazi where our people were dying but he didn't let it stop him from flying to Vegas for a fundraiser. Makes you sick. The cleanup after this president will be a long time coming...if ever. Not sure his damage is even cleanupable.

@Just A Cit
@David G

I'm not sure which you think is more egregious - that he took his family or entourage.

You do realize that the security team makes up the majority of the people traveling, right? Security for these things is a nightmare, logistically.

....I once provided ground support on one of these "vacations" as you call it with a cabinet secretary. In an African country. It was neither relaxing nor fun for anyone, I can assure you. He seemed bored as heck - can't leave the hotel except to go to meetings or make endless courtesy calls.

Perhaps we should just have the president go there alone, by himself. He can get a taxi from the airport and get robbed, stay in a hotel that's a glorified cement cell, and sleep under a mosquito net.

Maybe he could go to the beach, which some people still use as a toilet because of a lack of infrastructure.

“A rare moment of truth, AN. It was a vacation amateurishly disguised as an official trip to Africa.”

Still wrong. Why do you righties insist upon making up stuff? Oh, wait, it’s because you never have anything of actual substance to say. Sad, so very sad.

"Still untrue as it has been since the right wing blogosphere started this story weeks ago"

I figure once you read this you will respond by whining that the trip did not cost exactly 100 million, and also that it was not a "vacation" ......but here goes anyway.

A non- right wing source. estimating the cost at 60 to 100 million.

Yet another non right wing source from weeks ago.

And another non right wing source estimating the cost at 60 to 100 million.

If you need more I will be happy to provide them for you.

And I am sure you don't think it is a vacation, even though his mother in law and his neice went along. I am not sure how vital they are to our country's diplomatic efforts. Actually, I wonder how vital most of the "begger nations" in Africa he visited are to our national interests.

But hey, don't let facts stop you from just making stuff up.

LOL

That the trip cost $100 mil?

Soooo Daniel buddy...

Being the astute political pundit that you are, I'm sure that you are aware that former Presidents still have taxpayer paid...for lack of a better word let's say...perks such as Secret Service protection and other things while traveling, aren't you?

Can you name a former President who was also in Africa recently and can you give us all a breakdown of what that trip that he and his wife took cost the American public? Please be precise if you can.

Oh, and can you tell us all how much it cost the American public when that former President went to Africa while he was in office?

Can you say "Works both ways, I guess"?

Didn't think so.

I eagerly await your response, or someone elses response, that somehow things are different because of Obama...as is to be expected!

...said by someone who has clearly never been to Africa. Or has any idea what long-range military strategy looks like.

Senegal and Ghana are the closest stable democracies in West Africa. Senegal also borders Mali, a country that is harboring jihadists like crazy up in the northern portions of the country. Niamey, the capitol of Niger, is currently home to a U.S. drone base, but the security situation there is deteriorating fast. Where do you turn next? Hmmm.......

South Africa is a stable economic powerhouse we need to help keep China from getting a significant foothold on the continent. You should want this to protect U.S. jobs and U.S. interests executed by the UN.

Tanzania is another stable country that has dealt with jihadists well as they attempted to flow out of Somalia, through Kenya, is a combination Christian/Muslim country, and gives us access to protect ships in the Indian Ocean from pirates. Also, we're stepping up (stupid) intervention in Somalia for the millionth time in 30 years, and Kenya isn't secure enough to use strategically.

@Daniel:

Oh where to begin…

1. This was diplomatic trip, not simply a vacation.

2. The largest driver of the cost of this trip was security. The actual cost estimate was $60-$100 million based on the cost of past presidential trips to Africa.

3. President Bush took two trips to Africa while president and Laura Bush took five separate “goodwill” trips to Africa all on the taxpayer’s dime with similar security levels and a large entourage. Did you squawk about any of that?

4. If you have issues with how the sequester affects things like the White House tours go talk to Gosar, McCain and Flake. The Republican Party and its fixation on austerity are ultimately responsible for this situation.
