Letter: Misplaced priorities

I read, with disgust, the Miner article "Meals on Wheels" in the July 10 edition.

How the heck is it that the richest country in the world cannot feed our seniors when they need it but can send millions/billions of dollars to Third World countries that hate and try to kill us? How is it that our military does not get the proper life-saving equipment they need but we can afford to have our government waste millions (TSA, FBI, NSA) on foolishness?

How is it that our "royal family" can go on 18 vacations in four and a half years but we cannot afford to take care of our military personnel once they come home and need support?

People, we need to do some real soul searching this mid-term election cycle. Changes need to be made on both sides of the aisle and get our country back on the right track.

Take care of our people first and our allies second.

Sam Wise

Mohave County did not cut senior funding. It actually increased funding $30,000. Any decrease in overall senior funding is the result of reduced federal, state or private contributions.

Socialism is sharing wealth with even your enemies? I read this and then wondered I guess Jesus was a socialist under this analogy, (delete) but Jesus did say if you ignore the poor, hungry, the naked those sick and in prison you have ignored him! I often like the parable of how hard it will be for the rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, as hard as a camel riding through the eye of a needle! What political party talks of their love of their money 24/7? Which party goes insane if you even suggest giving to the poor? I think Jesus said something very telling you can tell them false prophets who come in his name by what proceeds from their mouths! A certain party claims ownership of God and his son Jesus, wonder how they will fare when they meet Jesus for that all important moment when he either knows them or not!

You're exactly right Sam, it is spending money on the wrong thing. Whether it is the military, education, foreign aid, etc etc, it doesn't help to throw money at it unwisely. Both parties are at fault but they just sit and blame each other and get nothing done. That is why I vote against ALL tax increases. They get plenty of our money if they would just use it wisely.

World's Top Military Spenders, in Billions, 2012:

USA, $682
China, $166
Russia, $90.7
United Kingdom, $60.8
Japan, $59.3
France, $58.9
Saudi Arabia, $56.7
India, $46.1
Germany, $45.8
Italy, $34
Brazil, $33.1

I have listed 11 countries here. The United States spends more on Military than the next 10 countries COMBINED!

What's wrong with this picture?

Sam said our soldiers are not being given the proper life saving equipment they need...but we sure as heck are paying someone, somewhere for something to rack up that kind of budget are we not? Our esteemed Republican President Dwight David Eisenhower warned us about becoming prey to the Dreaded Military -Industrial Complex but did we and our representatives in Washington listen?

Sam said our Vets aren't getting the support they need when they get home. I wonder how much of that $682 Billion dollar budget goes to them, or to those Vets that still survive from our previous wars and "police" actions.

The United States World share of Military spending is 39%...number two China's World share is 9.5%.

The US needs to stop being the Policeman of the World. We need to stop OVERPAYING the "Daddy Warbucks" corporations who prey on the collective fear of our populace and charge way too much money for the products (sometimes inferior products as Sam pointed out) we taxpayers buy for our Military!

I'm all for a strong Military and for the US to be able to defend itself, but considering that spending for the Military represents 4.4% of our GDP and (depending on whose figures you choose to believe) at least 20% of our total budget, I think it's time for some accountability, belt tightening and redirection of some of that budget towards other priorities!

"With the obamacare monstrosity that democrats are running away from, that 'lockbox' is being raided to fund that idiocy."

Totally and completely bogus. Sad to see such blantant misinformation being posted.

I'll say this much - I wish Obama would wipe that smile off his face while 26 U.U. military veterans daily are committing suicide, most from the recent wars in places we do not belong.

Article comment by: Sequester having no effect?

It's the sequester that's cutting out funds for Meals on Wheels, among many other things, and Congress still refuses to consider a more balanced approach to budget cutting. At the same time, there are still people out there who get all their news from Rush and Fox and insist that the sequester has had no effect whatsoever.

Foreign aid needs to be stopped and then reviewed under strict scrutiny.
Much of it is not only wasted, it's just outright stolen.

Every administration is guilty of this, from the early 60's program of giving rice to the Vietnamese to borrowing $7 billion dollars to build Africa's power grid- so there's a dependable supply of energy for Chinese mines and factories.

The poor are not always" lazy, shiftless." Giving people a helping hand is not the same as giving them permanent handouts. We have intergenerational welfare in this country. Now it's demanded as a right.

Seniors in this country are being robbed. Everyone here who has ever worked(and your employer) has been forced to pay into Social Security and Medicare. With the obamacare monstrosity that democrats are running away from, that "lockbox" is being raided to fund that idiocy. Now the regime wants to delay it for another year, to mitigate the inevitable disaster in the 2014 elections. Remember, with obama,it's all about politics.

Money wasted on the UN and foreign aid could be used to supply foodstuffs for OUR poor. USDA along with private groups like Feeding America and various food banks, also help America's farmers and ranchers by purchasing their products. We could reduce the cash benefits for people on welfare because they wouldn't have to spend as much money on food. Money saved could be used to build up our increasingly 3rd world infrastructure and provide jobs.

You said a mouthful there, Sam.
I'm nearing (and fearing) senior status myself.
I'm not scared of the age thing, I'm scared of what I view as a diminished respect of and for the aged by our Government. I believe the Obamacare legislation proves that categorically. Shameful.

PS I liked the part about "both sides of the aisle". A house cleaning is in order.

Priorities is amusing coming on the heels of a tendency for the far right wing to demonize the poor, the unemployed as lazy shiftless, deserving and wanting of their poverty and unemployment, I have often said when the republican party has beat these two dead horses till they will not twitch anymore they have the third dead horse to beat the elderly, shame on them for growing old, becoming disabled due to age related illnesses, shame on them for living long enough to be entitled to that meager barely life sustaining social security check, of course they have their solutions raise the retirement age, work that old dead horse till it falls dead! Republicans are lip service fake compassionate conservatives, much as their morality in god is often lip service!
