Letter: Care for veterans suffering

For 13 years I have been using the Kingman VA Outpatient Clinic. Having served in the U.S. Navy, I am entitled to some VA benefits! Recently, due to all of the federal budget cuts, services have decreased a whole bunch!

The number of veterans needing help (due to all of the global conflicts American has entered into) has increased beyond the clinic's capability. Now they want American service people to get into another foreign country's conflict. We and the United Nations already sent this country over $8 billion in aid.

Next, I recently had cause to visit the Kingman VA Clinic. Not meaning to degrade foreign doctors, I'm sure there are many very good ones, but I did not have personal contact with a doctor, but was put on a video teleconference from who knows where? He was not an American, and I wonder if he served in the United States Armed Forces. His English was very poor and difficult to understand, and mostly none of my physical problems were rectified.

Come on, America! Wake up and do something to accommodate the people who have served and sacrificed for you!

Dan Minor

"It’s always fun to watch righties come her and pretend “know” all about someone they do not know nor have ever met. USMC – 1961/1970 – RVN 1968/1970."

Pretty much the same claim Brian Dennehy made, right up until the book "Stolen Valor" came out.

Frank in Kingman, that doesn't surprise me that the Kingman clinic would lie to me. Job security I guess. I will have to check into it again because it's obvious I'm not going to get any care here.

“I have no idea who this ansons nephew is but I would bet my last dollar he has never served his country and probably never will in any capacity.”

And you would lose your last dollar. It’s always fun to watch righties come her and pretend “know” all about someone they do not know nor have ever met. USMC – 1961/1970 – RVN 1968/1970. Don’t you feel foolish now?

@VA Patient,
You can belong to as many VA facilities as you want and you don't have to give up the Kingman VA. There are no restrictions. All you have to do is register at the facility of your choice. (choices) I chose Las Vegas because I could not get even basic care at the Kingman VA.
I belong to the Southeast clinic in Henderson\, so give them a call. 1020 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89015, (702) 791-9030

@A Serious Thought.
Your incorrect. I belong to the Kingman VA and the Las Vegas VA. You can belong to as many VA facilities as you want. If you happen to travel a lot, you can belong to every VA facilities you travel to. The catch is, you have to make sure you renew at every one of them each year.
I have at one time belonged to to three. Kingman, Las Vegas and Great Lakes.

@ VA Patient

It's not hard to transfer to Vegas. First you go to their clinic and tell them you would like to transfer. They set you up with an initial appt, and from then on you are a Vegas patient. Now the kicker is you will have to go there for all your needs as you will be in another "districts area" and your records will be there also. Kingman VA will not have your record any longer thus they don't have your history.

I recently was seen by the oriental doctor mentioned. I think it would be best if I checked out the Henderson VA clinic and transferred to there. As mentioned, while the doctor was pleasant enough, the language and hearing barrier was just too much to overcome.

also just trying to get a disability eval is practicaly impossible. there is one doc there who has a very bad attitude when I finally got my appt he spent a lot of time telling me his problems and didnt even let me tell him about the error on my service record. I think I will try the Las Vegas doctors becuase they sound like better doctors.

If republicans have their way VA medical care will be privatized, sequestration is likely cause of this story but one will never get the angry right wingers to admit their party works for the elite 2% who live off the dividends of the health insurance stock portfolios they own! Look at the Governor of Florida today, a billionaire who barely escaped a federal prison cell for Medicare/Medicaid fraud, some folks are not to smart and willing go to the slaughter! The republicans believe and love one thing money the love of which is the root of all evil! What do you hear a republican talk about 24/7 their money!:-)

How do you qualify to go to Vegas? I was always told that I have to stay in my "district" (N.AZ), unless it is an emergency and Vegas was the closest ER to me. I've been told that by many employees/doctors in the VA system.

Just wondering.

Thank you for the information and I did not know
there was a list of ships that were involved in agent orange and I will try to find it.
You're right about using the internet for ordering meds from the VA and I will try that also.
I too have medical problems from the service and it seems to get worse with age. The VA for some reason has lost my records and now I have a law firm trying to get them.
It is a shame that a Vet has to fight their own country for help......thanks for the help.

"From the mouth of a former VA physician.. under the NU Obama Care rules and regulations.."

Why do righties insist upong posting utter falsehoods? There is nothing in the Affordable Health Care Act that deals with VA treatment. Why lie about this stuff?

@ Capt. Nice

There is a list you can find on the internet that lists all the ships affected by agent orange and allowed to file claims against. I'd post the link but that's not allowed here. Also, I don't understand why people don't get their meds online. I never go to the VA, not even to renew a prescription, that's just a phone call and I order my meds from the VA website, I'd post that link too but it's not allowed. I have serious health issues that are getting worse everyday, but to get a doctors appt is impossible and if you do get one, it gets canceled and they request you to come in for "sickcall". "Sickcall", are they serious? One, I hardly went to sickcall when I was on active duty, and two, "SICKCALL", I'm not a service member anymore!

@ KGMN GAL
ObamaCare has nothing to do with the VA and you know it. Maybe it's just that the Arizona VA is a piece of garbage. I personally are allowed one visit a year with the Kingman VA and that is for a blood test.
I now go to the Las Vegas VA and I can go there any time and see a doctor. By the way, my last doctors visit was about a half an hour.

So keep your lies to yourself.

I don't know about your personal Doctor, but I have found, the Doctors here in Kingman are pretty good. My own belief about training to become a Doctor, Our young kids don't have the ability or what it takes to go to Med School, they seem too busy with drugs.

From the mouth of a former VA physician.. under the NU Obama Care rules and regulations.. a VA doc is given only ''''12 minutes''' to acquaint self with patients history, treat patient, and then write up a new history and list tests and new prescriptions.. 12 minutes! it takes me longer to use the restroom and greater satisfaction.
This former VA physician.. is no longer with the system.... so what the Vets are getting is mediocre or lesser than so called doctors.. Thanks Administration... for your medical treatment of our heros....

I totally agree, the representatives have the attitude of, "you did the job now fend for yourself" very sad how the elderly and vets are treated in this country.

@Dan
Here's another little bit for you. You know that there's a new VA clinic being built. I have to mention now that the VA is leasing the building, not buying it.There is a reason.
Well the guy that's in charge of the build is a friend of mine. They started clearing the land and the VA came in and put a stop to it. If you didn't know, the parking will be covered. Covered with solar panels. The VA wanted to know what the power output was. They decided it wasn't enough. No big deal. The builder got bigger panels.
The VA then demanded to know what the solar panels cost, down to every nut, bolt, screw and washer. The VA wouldn't let any work to be done until all paperwork was turned in. Mind you, they are "leasing" the building, not buying it.
It's been over two months since they halted the work and they "might" let work begin in a week or so.
So you see Dan, there's no budget cuts, it just the Arizona VA sucks. It alway has and always will.

@ Dan I've lived here for 15 years and the medical care you get from the Kingman VA has nothing to do with federal budget cuts. The medical care there has sucked from the day they opened their doors.
If you want good service, do what I and many vets in Kingman have done, go to the Las Vegas VA. I go to a quite large, brand new clinic in Henderson and I go to the specialists in the brand new hospital in North Las Vegas.
If you want to complain about the Arizona VA, give your republican senator a call or write him a letter. He's the one that has the ability to make changes.

I too belong to the VA medical and have about given up. When you go to the front window to hand in a presciption you're treated like a bum off the street. You also need a progress report from your doctor, which is time consuming.
When you turn in a prescription, that take more than a week to get here, it sometimes turns out to be something altogether different than you ordered and then you have to send it back and wait again.
My Brother who was in Vietnam on board a ship has had lots of cancers and medical problems due to the B52's spraying their agent orange, but the VA said since he didn't put foot on land he is not eligible for their help....I guess he should have lied as some do.
My doctor is an oriental and a person can hardly understand him, plus he is hard of hearing, so it is actually a waste of time to go to him.
Actually I think they try to discourage you from going to the VA or at least it seems like it, but they sure like to send you their junk mail.
All I can say it sure is a heck of a way to treat our vets and our country should be ashamed.

Sounds as if you need to find your own doctor and pay for your own health care.
