Letter: In love with 'free' stuff

So many newscasters have cast news, reporters have reported, writers have written and op-eds have op'ed, exhausting all the reasons why the election turned out as it did.

The explanations are as varied as the number of newscasts aired or articles written. Most of them accurately defined a particular segment of the answer. But to sum up the overall context of the debate, the general reason the election went as it did is relatively uncomplicated.

During the months of campaigning prior to the November election, Romney's crusade was about fiscal austerity, reining in government spending and eliminating useless bureaucratic strongholds. Obama's strategy centered on attacking the wealthy, redistribution of that wealth and the promise of government freebies - free contraceptives, reduced interest on student loans, increased government handouts, "affordable" medical care, and other inventions.

In other words, Romney's message was what the voters needed to hear; Obama's was what they wanted to hear. Fifty-four percent of the electorate, the low-information voters, went for the giveaways, bought the pie-in-the-sky, drank the Kool-Aid.

Ya know OKR there's really no sense in trying to enlighten you. Too much work in too little time.

I did have to chuckle with your comment about Romney's 47% line being made at a "non public event". (It's called private by the way.) He was running for president so it is important to learn of his philosophy even when it is made in private.

Oh and one last thing I've been curious by your name - what's Origional? Is it suppose to be Original?

“Because you made it through college doesn't necessarily mean you are highly intelligent.”

This is the meme posted by those who never attempted to gain higher education. The “made it though college” line is always a laugh because completing a degree is a process that takes massive amounts of work and perseverance.

“Perhaps you went to college where a liberal professor warped your brain.”

Perhaps you did not. Perhaps you had to deal with a Right Wing professor who kept spewing John Birch Society garbage day in and day out – which prompted you to seek the facts instead of nonsense.

”I have worked most of my life and knew people with degrees who couldn't change a lightbult but others who just started working young, never went to college at all and could do anything.”

I have no idea what a “lightbult” is, but I am sure there are people of all types who might have difficulty with such a task – although I seriously doubt their number would exceed 2 per 1,000,000. As to working I have also most of my life and that work has involved everything from grunt labor to advanced engineering followed by instructional training design to make the advanced engineering concepts viable for technicians. And while working I managed to attend university and obtain two degrees – all thanks to the taxpayers of the United States.

And what do you mean by “do anything?” Are we to now assume that because you did not attend college you are able to find a design fault in a helium/neon laser that causes it to fail at the upper end of the red spectrum?

A college degree is not indicative of greater intelligence, simply a different path taken.

“Really? Your are referring to a comment made at a non public event, and then taking that comment out of context.”

Oh, so a presidential candidate making the comment that 47% of the nation are freeloaders is okay if it is done in private? Got it, thanks for the clarification

”Obama has made disparaging remarks about a far greater than 47% of Americans, at public events, multiple times.”

Please feel free to post these “multiple times.” Thank you.

“He was absolutely correct. 47% of the population doesn't pay taxes..”

Ahh, this sadly pathetic meme rears its head once again. I will now ask - as I have for the past three years – that YOU now tell us exactly who these sad individuals are who pay no taxes? And tell us where can we find them? Are they living naked in a hole alongside the road hoping those of us who do pay taxes will toss the remains of a Big Mac their way? Please WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE WHO PAY NO TAXES? (Pardon me for shouting).

“You can see by the low information voters responses on here who voted obama the fraud back in.”

You really love the Old Gasbag’s line don’t you? That is so sad. And I will now ask you – again – to provide any empirical evidence that the President is a fraud. And please, no birther nonsense.

”… their blindness and the fraud in the election …”

And now for what is closing in on the twentieth time I will ask you to provide some proof of fraud in the election. Thank you.

“… low info's so dedicated to The Amateur, they were willing to go to jail to cheat votes for him.”

Well, that “amateur” comment must be directed at Willard the Money Hider because the only person I know of that was convicted of voter fraud was the woman from Las Vegas who pled guilty to voting twice for Willard.

“I love the Romney and his money overseas and never showing his taxes. How low info can you get. He showed his taxes and every person running for anything had money overseas..”

How interesting that the righties actually support both tax fraud and hiding money off-shore. Oh and BTW, I have asked before and you ignored it – tell us exactly who this “everybody” is that are hiding money off-shore.

“Our true unemployment rate is about 22%, the false one they use is about the same as when he went into office.”

And you know this information because …. Yeah, that’s what I thought.

I do feel great pity for the die hard republicans have many of them in my own family, all on my dads side of the family, two Klansmen former democrats who converted to republicanism and stayed drunk on the right wing snake oil, one till he died, one is dying of intestinal cancer, hate is not good for you, it bring bad karma and bad health! But one cannot change some peoples inner natures, souls they either live for hate or live to not hate, guess god did give us that choice in life!

@ America choose wisely

They voted against a man who denigrated and dismissed 47% of America outright

Really? Your are referring to a comment made at a non public event, and then taking that comment out of context.

Obama has made disparaging remarks about a far greater than 47% of Americans, at public events, multiple times.
You fail to recognize them because the liberal media didn't shove your face in them endlessly.

The remark about punishing enemies, made during a speech to Latinos. And Obama made this comment while he was the President.

Romney was being pragmatic when he made the remark to his finders, as to how to target their efforts. He was absolutely correct. 47% of the population doesn't pay taxes and would be less likely to support a conservative platform of less taxes and government spending.

Obama' s campaign stated that they weren't going to target to "white middle class voters". Obviously, they were being pragmatic about who would not support his tax and spend policies.

Of course, after 4 years of Obama's failed economic policies, the percentage of white middle class voters is no where near 47% of the population.

Well DB:

You can see by the low information voters responses on here who voted obama the fraud back in.

Not hard to see at all - their blindness and the fraud in the election of low info's so dedicated to The Amateur, they were willing to go to jail to cheat votes for him.

Pathetic! I love the Romney and his money overseas and never showing his taxes. How low info can you get. He showed his taxes and every person running for anything had money overseas, all done by their investment people, most of whom weren't even aware of it.

It's done every day.

The best was 36 months of job growth and unemployment going down. You have to be completely out of touch with the world to say things like that. Worse than pathetic, it is disturbing. Our true unemployment rate is about 22%, the false one they use is about the same as when he went into office.

We are in big trouble if this is a cross section of the America of today.

I am sure that is true. But I wonder if they just didn't bother to do research in inner city Black areas where obama got 95% t0 100% of the vote. Not exactly overeducated voters there.

Politcally correct? No Factual? Yes

No, D.B., Americans voted for the steady course of economic recovery and the careful thoughtful approach to foreign policy that has been demonstrated by President Obama.

They voted against a man who denigrated and dismissed 47% of America outright. They voted against a man who claimed to "Believe in America" yet socked his millions offshore, refused to release tax returns even his dad would have causing concern of illegality, and against one believing "corporations are people, my friend."

America chose wisely. Unfortunately the right wing of a once reasonable proud party refuses to even approach a working relationship with the duly elected President Obama.

@D.B.

I really enjoy the irony here - someone else in another article is "I told you so"-ing people with college degrees that voted for Obama.

Let's look at some actual cold, hard facts with citations:
1) REPUBLICAN voter turnout was lower in 2012 than 2008. Even for the primaries. This means that Romney, along with everyone else, was simply a lousy candidate compared to McCain. Obama had lower turnout too. All those people who want "free stuff" are also, politically, VERY hard to move. Once Obama won the first time those people were unlikely to vote in 2012 because they had seen the "work" of voting as already having been accomplished in 2008.

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/11/07/2012-Turnout-Dramatically-Lower-Than-2008

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/31/us/politics/primary-turnout-could-signal-trouble-for-gop.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

2) Uninformed masses? Turns out that the more educated someone is the more likely they are to vote Dem - AND the more likely they are to have a higher lifetime income.
http://petriesan.wordpress.com/2012/09/07/how-does-education-correlate-with-voting-patterns/

3) You're also totally missing the urban/rural side of this. Urban centers hold more people in concentrated areas, and urban dwellers also usually vote Dem. You see all these maps of vast spaces of Red.... How will the voters of Mohave Co. make up for Chicago and NY, which can both fit in the same geographic space?

Sorry you're still nursing these sore spots, but if you really wanted to help your party you would look into why the GOP lost in 2012 and develop strategic initiatives for 2016. Not whine about it.

“In other words, Romney's message was what the voters needed to hear..”

Actually it wasn’t, but it’s your opinion and you are welcome to it.

With Romney the American people saw through the smoke screen to the anti-American sleaze hiding behind it. Job destruction, shipping American jobs to Communist China, Communist Chinese sweatshop investments, hiding his money off-shore, not providing his tax returns and a hatred for nearly half of our nation were all things that caused Romney to be just another Republican loser.

“Obama's was what they wanted to hear.”

Yes it was. 36 months of positive job growth, unemployment dropping (no thanks to the Republican obstructionists), the stock market hitting all time highs, home interest rates at the lowest in nearly thirty years, more illegal immigrants captured and deported (last year alone) than during the eight year Reign of Error of The Criminal, the American auto industry back on top, Osama bin Laden killed, the lowest rate of taxes since the 1950s, the war in Iraq ended, health care for every American, women receiving equal pay for equal work, and the list goes on.

What is sad are the voters who once again fell for the nonsense put forth by the Republicans. Now that is jus pathetic!

Obama won – so just deal with it.

Wow this letter writer has a long time to whine till next election at being a sore loser! I guess one could say he bought that right wing snake oil cure all that ails you that his party sold during 2000-2008, and drank it with gusto! Anything negative today was not created by Obama but this fellows buddy Bush Jr, them two mid east wars on that Chinese credit card the bill it due, the housing bubble bust, economic decline ruin happened on his mans watch, if he is unhappy at the mess look in the mirror for whom he voted for and fooled some to vote with him in 2000 and 2004!

I could not have said it any better. We all know that Romney would have made an excellent president, but the left hated him in fear they might loose something that Obama promised.
What comes around goes around and these people will be sorry one day. I was four years ago!
Lots of people on the right stayed home because he was a Mormon or some other stupid reason and that is what really irks me.
So now we have four more years of a president who expects everyone around him to do all the work while he vacations, plays golf, dribbles basketballs with his NBA friends etc etc.....dang people are stupid!
Now the left is working feverishly to come up with some dirt on Ben Carson and good luck with that!

@ DB
DB you live on the planet of I am out of touch with America. Your explanation of why Romney failed in his attempt to become President is right out of the Fox news playbook. Sorry DB, you and Fox news are wrong. The real reason Romney did not win is the Majority of Americans seen Romney and the Republican Party out of tough with 2012 America. The majority of Americans see the Republican Party as bigoted and radically to religious for today’s America. In closing DB, the new America is diverse in race and religion. America is moving away from the McCarthy era and see our great wealth should be spent on Americans not building a military empire to over throw governments at will. You sir are in the minority. Your republican party lost the election. With Romney losing America is a better place.
