Local Column: The brothers Tsarnaev

We've found out quite a bit about Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the ethnic Chechen brothers suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon.

Tamerlan, the one killed Friday morning, was once a talented boxer who studied engineering for a time. It appears he was the more alienated of the two; he reportedly had a history of domestic violence, was aggressive and controlling and spoke of having no American friends and not understanding Americans. His own family apparently worried about his influence over his younger brother.

Dzhokar's case is more puzzling, at least considering what's known so far. He was by many accounts a well-liked athlete in high school who had gone on to college. One of his teachers called him a "sweetheart."

Others remembered him being as American as apple pie - hardly surprising, since he'd grown up in this country for about 10 years and even became a citizen.

Those who knew the younger brother either went into denial that he could be involved or became very angry. His uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, urged Dzhokhar to turn himself in and said this: "He put a shame on the Tsarni family. He put a shame on the entire Chechen ethnicity."

That comment is worth noting in light of an effort Friday, while Boston was still locked down and a manhunt under way, to link this horrible event to the immigration debate.

The Tsarnaev brothers are immigrants, you see. Legal ones. They're also Muslim, or at least grew up in a Muslim family.

Some will link the words "Muslim immigrant" and "sleeper cell," and combined with shouts of "no amnesty!" (which no one is proposing anyway) will further muddy the debate and stymie reforms that need to take place.

If you find yourself taking that mental route, pause, inhale deeply and turn your brain around. Remember: We're a country of immigrants, including Muslims, who have been immigrating to America since at least the 1800s.

Muslim African slaves, brought here by force, arrived even earlier.

There are even Muslims right here in Kingman! It's true - working, praying, raising kids, paying taxes and following their respective American dreams. Two idiot bombers do not speak for them.

I'm glad Dzhokhar was taken alive, and I hope he lives (long enough to talk to investigators, at least). I want to hear his excuse. I want to know what was going on in his and his brother's heads. He can't justify what they did, but maybe we'll learn something about how people get to the place he apparently reached - a place where you can convince yourself to bomb strangers who were either achieving a milestone or cheering on someone who was.

Then the court system can have him, followed by prison. Massachusetts doesn't have the death penalty. There's a federal death penalty option, but life without parole is fine with me. Prove him guilty in a court of law and let him rot - besides, it's probably cheaper to do that instead of paying for decades of death penalty appeals.

That process should take place in a civilian court, not a military tribunal. Our courts handled the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh. They can handle this guy as well, even if it turns out the brothers have connections to violent groups elsewhere.

Classifying them as terrorists makes them sound more important than they are. They weren't fighting oppression. They weren't striking an autocratic regime or trying to topple a corrupt military state. They snuck up on normal, everyday strangers and blew them up.

That makes them nothing more than murderers - and cowards.

“First you leftists were swearing up and down the Boston Bombings were done by conservatives because it was Tax Day.”

You will, of course, be able to supply a link for that assertion? Didn’t think so.

“So why did the older brother go overseas for 6 months?”

We don’t know but I’m sure you can provide a link telling us why? Didn’t think so.

“His family there states he did not spend a lot of time with them in that 6 months.”

And the link to that is … non-existent. Figures.

“How could the older brother afford to go there?”

Tell us? Please.

“Someone paid for the trip.”

Who? Tell us since you seem to know it all.

“But as always, leftist want to make believe that muslims are not a threat.”

And your proof of that is … also non-existent.

"no great international conspiracy, "

First you leftists were swearing up and down the Boston Bombings were done by conservatives because it was Tax Day. When the muslim terrorist was killed and his terrorist brother captured, it took the wind of Leftist sails. Leftists then began screeching that their actions had nothing to do with their being muslims.

So why did the older brother go overseas for 6 months?: His family there states he did not spend a lot of time with them in that 6 months. How could the older brother afford to go there? He and his wife were recieving welfare in MA. Someone paid for the trip. But as always, leftist want to make believe that muslims are not a threat.

Now be sure to bring up something like the Crusades as a example of Christian terrorism. And be sure to use plenty of unneccessary exclamation points. Leftists having to go back that far for their prime example always makes me.........

LOL

Fox and friends is so sad this story is fizzling, no great international conspiracy, no country to invade or bomb in vengeance! I guess they will have to settle for two misfits, angry at the world, with some twisted religious beliefs, funniest thing to me is if one reads some of these comments here their kindred spirits exist here as well, hating the fellow in the white house due to his skin tone, angry that they will never rise to his station in life, position! It must drive some insane to realize they will never be anything much and leave eve less on this earth but a meager grave stone in some unknown to most of us cemetery! The good thing is the birther's, secessionists and other assorted right wing are mostly harmless and hurt only themselves!

What an amazing display of pure ignorance. So many things could be said about it. But the one thing that stands out most is this: enemies of our country...enemies of freedom, are very pleased when they read a column like this. They know that it is people like this...who think like this, that are the most benefit to those who truly want to harm our country and damage our way of life.

Good job Choate. You strive to make our country weaker, dumber and more vulnerable to future attacks. You do this while attempting to hold the intellectual and moral high ground. What a joke.

The terrorists just love guys like you. You make them salivate, lick their chops and rub their hands together.

If you live in Cambridge, Massachusetts you are required to be at least 21 years old and have a permit for your weapons. If you do have a permit from a different town, you are then required to give a copy of the permit to the Cambridge, Massachusetts police.

The two terrorist brothers had no permits and the younger wasn’t even old enough to get a permit, much less have a weapon.

I just don’t get it. The strict Massachusetts laws restricting 2nd Amendment Rights and the American citizens’ rights should have worked.

It all looked so good on paper and it made some people feel really safe and secure.

It made Ted Kennedy the Democratic standard bearer when it came to controlling and herding your flock of constituents towards disarmed delusions of peaceful wolves, honest politicians and kind and misunderstood Islamist extremists.

On the morning of the killings and hours after, I wonder how many citizens wished they hadn’t let a bunch of old corrupt white men infringe upon their rights to have a weapon.

Preferably an AK-47 or a .223 Bushmaster with 30 round clips.

@ Charles and Pamala

Using your logic, not jumping the gun incase these brothers are not the true culprits, then it is a good thing law enforcement got two young men off the street who were conveniently armed with guns and explosives with which they had no hesitation to use against the police.

@Uncle Anson....
Not sure exactly what you are saying when you typed this..."Undisputed Fact number two. He was not given Miranda as required by law. There was plenty of time to do that at his capture and if unconscious at his recovery."

Whatever you meant...it's not quite a true statement. The "as required by law" part I mean. You can be taken in to custody w/o the warning....but if you answer any questions, the info in your answers cannot be used at trial. There are some exceptions.

Easy to read article is here...http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/police-questioning-miranda-warnings-29930.html

Actually its a miranda warning. More specific to this case, common procedures of investigation may be by-passed in cases of terrorism in the united states. Secondly, miranda warnings only protect against self incrimination, they do not protect against the finding of tangible evidence or physical proof of a crime. Finally, miranda warnings do not have to be given upon arrest or detainment but only upon investigative questioning that will be used incriminatingly against an invidual involved in a normal crime..for all you know this guy was simply not given his warnings upon arrest and detainment, which even within normal law is perfectly fine...just sayin

Just no one

“there IS an amnesty bill in review, just watch ANY news program, or listen to your illegal president , and you will hear about it.”

Although it will be pointless I will now ask you to provide us with the exact bill number that is proposing amnesty. Be specific. Thank you.

As to Obama being the “illegal president” I have no idea what you are talking about – he was elected by the American people – a large percentage of the American people. The only illegal president I am familiar with was The Criminal appointed by the Supreme Court in 2000.

”… are all dems as misinformed as you? or are you just ( fill in the blank)”

Actually the Democrats are the ones who are informed.

Yes, there are new immigration bills in review. But what does George Bush the second have to do with it? He is the illegal President.

Lets stop the right wing left wing jinsanity and the political name calling and party accusations of fault. This is a perfect case to see if America is still intact. First of all, undisputed fact number 1. The man is a citizen of the United States. No matter how deplorable his act, he is a citizen. Undisputed Fact number two. He was not given Miranda as required by law. There was plenty of time to do that at his capture and if unconscious at his recovery. Undisputed fact number 3. If the American people allow just one citizen to lose their rights or be treated outside the law, no matter the crime, them we are asking for exactly what we will get. Have a nice day.

There are stories on the Mexico blacks but PBS put out a video that is really good - shows family pictures w/black grandparents, etc.

Name of the story is "Black in Latin America - Mexico and Peru - A Hidden Race. The Almost Unknown History of Their Significant Black Populations"

Website is http://video.pbs.org/video/1915580662/

Hundreds of thousands of black slaves came over to Mexico from Africa - at one point as many slaves in Mexico as there were whites. Remember Spanish, Mexican, whatever are all Caucasian so that means they are considered white. They were brought over as early as 1553, 20% died crossing - the first arrivals came to Vera Cruz. Many were Congolese. .

Shown are huge walls they built, forced to dive for rocks and coral to build them.

They intermarried soon so they say nearly every Mexican has some black blood in them today. More black slaves went into Mexico and Peru together than were ever brought to the United States. The story plainly states that. Their music and food in places comes from Africa.

Interestingly, many probably do not know many Irish were brought to America as slaves also. We think endentured meant something else but it meant slaves. They were often treated much worse than black slaves here.

And on another black note, one of the Jewish tribes was discovered in Africa a few years back and the Israeli government is helping them move back to Israel. They are very black and very beautiful. Their features are different than what we traditionally think African blacks look like but they always knew they were Jewish and they have carried the Star of David with them forever. Check it out. Interesting. God bless Israel for bringing them "home".

Lets not jump the Gun on this to Fast because there where more than just "TWO" brothers with Backpackets in the Crowd as far as I can see on TV folks. And what would happen if thay really did have the wrong suspects than what thay say and thank then what thay Killed one and the other brother is in the Hospital some what Alive that is. And why does the world judge people so fast I thought God is the only person that can Judge a person so fast. And again "I" well pray for the young man that's alive and for the Brother that was shot dead in the late night shoot out with the Police and we should also Pray for there Family's as well. PS: let's try and take real breath of fresh air over this and let God and Jesus handle this problem. Good Day.

Personally, I'm of the thinking of if he's guilty...why waste the time and effort to keep him alive? Let him die - in whatever manner they see fit. We spend more money housing and keeping criminals alive than we do to help those in our country who need it. I'm not saying that people should have to give and give and give - only if they want to. But people should be fairly taxed, and those taxes should pay for what this country needs. Not to keep some terrorist scum safe until his death.

They were radicalized and the SVR warned us about Tamerlan. Further, FBI/ICE ignored this warning after a cursory investigation. What did he do during the time between arriving in Moscow and disappearing for 6 months?

I spent many years in the middle east. From Pakistan to Egypt, there was always an anti-American undercurrent among the people, even those we were actively helping. After seeing the pictures of the suspects, my first instinct was Albanian, Bosnian or Chechen. With the presence of pressure cooker bombs, it was confirmed it was islamic terrorism.

I find it interesting that people wonder why these people turn on us after being granted residency in this country. They have been radicalized, just as many are being radicalized in prisons, schools and mosques in the US. They are simply following one of the five pillars of islam, jihad. Just like Nidal Hassan, who was radicalized and was a terrorist too, despite what the Deceiver-In-Chief wants us to believe.

I don't see any differences between them and the black and white radicals of a generation ago. Bill Ayers,Huey Newton, Jane Fonda, Bernadine Dohrn, Kathy Boudin(a real sweetheart).
Same pew, different church.

Extradite him to China for the death of that Chinese national. He will receive a fair trial, I'm sure. Otherwise, it will just be a media circus.

@Our response tells terrorist much: If you think this is anything like 9/11, you need to get out a little more,

“With all due respect, amnesty is a big part of the recent bill as the millions here illegally will get amnesty for five years, until the border is secured. Hohohohoho!”

Wrong, as usual. There is no provision for amnesty in any bills currently under consideration. Why post such nonsense?

“You failed to mention the Arab National at the scene, injured, others grabbed him for police - now we are deporting him for Saudi at breakneck speed (next Tuesday).”

Nope, he is not being deported – next Tuesday. Utter nonsense with no basis in fact.

“His family is into terrorism, some members in Al Quada. “

How do you know that – oh ait, I’ll bet that idiot Glenn Beck told you, didn’t h? You gotta stop listening to the fool!

“Why was he by the bombing?”

Perhaps we should ask the other hundred thousand people why they were in Boston on Patriots Day?

More FYI:

Tamaran, the dead brother, had 22 (possibly more) videos pushing Jihad against America on the internet.

Gosh, I would think that might be another red flag to SOMEONE in our country. Since we had already been advised by Russia of terrorist connections and his being on a watch list, why was nothing done to him over these Jihadist videos.

This is the fifth time now the FBI has blown it - been advised ahead of time about these types of people, did nothing, all of them followed up with terrorist attacks.
