Camp Verde Letter: A warning from the sheriff

Sheriff Terry Maketa of El Paso County, Colo., wrote a letter to his fellow Americans, you and me, regarding the attack on our Constitution.

He writes, "In the blink of an eye, the law-abiding citizens of Colorado have lost their Second Amendment Rights. The Colorado legislature pushed through several unconstitutional gun control measures that were quietly signed into law by our governor."

Maketa says he knew that the anti-gun legislation didn't come from the people of Colorado - it came from Washington, D.C. (President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden) and from New York (Mayor Bloomberg). He says that when he took the oath to become sheriff, he swore to uphold the U.S. Constitution - not to do the bidding of politicians in New York and Washington, D.C.

Maketa says he and 50 other Colorado sheriffs have decided that they won't be a part of the attack on your constitutional right to bear arms. Speaking about the gun haters and slick politicians, Maketa continues, "They're having a hard time getting their sham gun control legislation passed on a national level, so now ... [they're] concentrating ... on getting guns banned in individual states - in your state if they can. Even if you are not a gun owner, what's to stop them from taking more of your rights once they've taken this one?"

Sheriff Maketa warns us that the battle to confiscate guns in every state is just beginning.

@NRA = Gun Manufacturers

Not being NRA Board of Directors.....How the hell would I know how much influence one member has? I know the answer to that as much as you do, which is absolutely not at all. LoL.

By the way I was responding to the commentor " Trained Observor" who claimed the NRA Board was made up of "gun manufacturers".

FL only 1 board member is a gun manufacturer. Assuming you know that as a fact can you guess how influential that one seat is coupled with the millions that NRA gets from gun manufacturers?

"What is it with you and your automatically thinking a person is lying? The issue at hand is expanded background checks along with polling data of law enforcement and neither link you proved addresses – specifically – expanded backgrounds checks."

Guess you missed question #4.

"4. What effect do you think the passage of the White House’s currently proposed legislation
would have in improving police officer safety?"

Seems to cover background checks to me, and anyone else other than the all knowing AN.

Oh, .......60% of those cops polled thought it would make none.

What is it with me and accusations of lying? First you claimed there was never a poll conducted. Then when you don't like being proven a........don't like being called out on it, you attempt to move the goal posts by lamely whining that the question was not worded exactly to your liking. Admit it AN, you never even looked for a poll before you claimed there was none.

Really weak, AN.

But as always, your antics do make me .....

"The system seems to be working just like it should be.... what's with the panic over this?"

Yes it is. And in more good new related to "the system seems to be working", recall petitions on two of the CO politicians have gathered enough signatures, the signatures have been verified, and the process is moving forward to oust them. Should be fun to watch, even if it is an iffy thing.

“It took me all of a minute to discover you were either lying or blissfully ignorant of facts.”

What is it with you and your automatically thinking a person is lying? The issue at hand is expanded background checks along with polling data of law enforcement and neither link you proved addresses – specifically – expanded backgrounds checks. Lots of nonsense questions, but no specifics, just as I stated.

“And sorry, but the 2nd Amendment trumps governing by polls anyway.”

And sorry, no one is proposing anything that will alter the Second Amendment. Why do you insist upon posting such nonsense? .

“Great source, AN, an organization made up of political hacks who answer to to their city bosses first.”

So, as usual, you have posted your “opinion” which has virtually no value in the real world.

I should have caught this the first time, my fault. But you just keep getting funnier and funnier.

You: "Also the IACP with over 21,000 law enforcement executives strongly support increased background checks."

So you are basing your claim, partly, that LEO's support stricter gun control laws on the basis of what the IACP thinks? The organization is for the rank of Lt. and above. An actual cop below that, who does more than sit behind a desk all day can only be an associate member. I guess the LEO "executives" do need someone to drive them to their group meetings and to make the coffee for them. LoL

Great source, AN, an organization made up of political hacks who answer to to their city bosses first.

Yes it is! Every law enforcement individual who feels he or she should obey laws based on “feelings” should be impeached, convicted and jailed.

You mean tyrants who decide – based on their “feelings” – that they will not enforce any law they “feel” is unconstitutional? Those tyrants? The ones who will just make it up as they go along? Those guys? Got it – thank you.

The problem with universal background checks is that they , as all the other unconstitutional schemes that have been advocated or passed in some states is that once again, they will not reduce crime.
All these proposals are directed at legal gun owners.
Criminals do not purchase guns with a background check. On the surface, it seems like common sense but it's not.

Chucky Schemer, the NY senator in Jan. of this year, pushed the universal background checks, saying that registration was illegal and would be illegal under this bill. Two weeks later, while being interviewed, he said, the bill"I've been pushing, the universal registration bill.." Once again, he was caught lying about proposed firearms legislation. He lied previously about plastic firearms being able to defeat metal detectors(Glock) and about "cop-killer" bullets(rifle ammunition). Many cops "thanked" him for giving that information out in public.

I wonder how many windbagger blowhards here are upset about police chiefs and sheriffs who are not enforcing federal laws regarding illegal immigration, sanctuary cities and marijuana.

Then to obama, he hates guns and would've loved to have seen bans and magazine restrictions but his main goal was the universal background check. He wanted the senate to pass it, and it would of course die in the House.
He'll do the same thing with immigration, he had from 2009-2011 to pass an immigration reform bill and didn't.
He wants to use immigration and gun control as political issues in 2014 and to take attention off his many scandals and poor economic results.

Recent Pew polls should tell him they're losers with the American public.

So several Sheriffs in CO are filing suit against the new laws, saying that they are unconstitutional.

The courts will decide if this bill is legal and constitutional - just like the framers of the constitution intended.

The system seems to be working just like it should be.... what's with the panic over this?

Law enforcement officers take an oath to defend the constitution of the state they are in and to defend the constitution of the United States.
The reason the oaths state to defend the state and national constitutions is to protect the people, who employ the LE officers, from tyrannical leadership.

“Really, ‘far more’. Can you provide a link for that claim?”

Although no polls have been taken specifically targeting law enforcement I think the consensus polls that show 90% of Americans supporting background checks is rather indicative of the mood of the nation. Even among gun owners (hey, that’s me!) support background checks by an 85% margin. Also the IACP with over 21,000 law enforcement executives strongly support increased background checks.

“Remember, Police Chiefs, who are appointed and do as they are told, are appointed. Sheriffs are elected by the people.”

What that has to do with the original comment is beyond me.

“Our current administration in D.C. does not intend to keep our national constitution intact!”

I’ve asked you before, but will ask again – please provide empirical evidence of the above statement. Thank you.

“Neither does the U.S. Supreme Court Justices! They just struck down the majority vote in California's Prop 8!”

Struck down because it was in constitutional. People voted to not allow women to vote or hold property. Are you upset about the courts decisions that led to a Constitutional amendment? People voted to deny rights to Blacks and those votes were knocked down by the Court. Were you upset by that?

“I don't care who the Supreme Court Justices are, their job is to protect OUR constitution!”

And by insuring that the rights of ALL Americans protected, they are doing just that. I will now ask that you show us where in the Constitution it says gay individuals should be denied the rights available to all other individuals. Please give us the section that deals with that. Thank you.

Don’t you ever get tired of being incorrect? No one is undermining the 2nd Amendment – if I am incorrect please specifically point out where that is taking place. And BTW – law enforcement are charged with upholding the laws – not ignoring ones they “feel” might be unconstitutional.

Article comment by: The Greased Path To Oblivion .....

The Constitutional right to bear arms is relatively weak, unless you believe that the collection of overweight, beer-guzzling American Idol fans with bear-killers in their closets constitute a well-regulated militia. Frankly, as the Constitution is being used more and more as a cover for the dissolution of everything early Americans sacrificed and hoped for, maybe we need to take another look at that document. That Second Look would grant carte blanche rights to gun ownership for everyone but those convicted of felony crimes using a gun. Even then, there could be a probationary period (in some cases, such as when nobody had been injured) of several years until the right is restored. As things stand, under cover of the Constitution, very knowledgeable people (including Muslims) are claiming that Sharia Law is on its way, the homosexual agenda is taking the form in California schools of essentially unisex bathrooms and shower facilities, and even the criminal invaders are seeking their "rights". Time to take another look at the Constitution. America's survival may have to take precedence over a Constitution which can be used as a greased path to oblivion.
