Letter: An assault on Arizona jobs

It is time to stop the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) assault on Arizona that does little more than put at risk our water, our energy and our economic future. The EPA's latest target is the Navajo Generating Station, which was authorized by Congress as part of a power project that was subject to decades of open and public debate.

At issue is the agency's regional haze plan aimed at improving visibility at the Grand Canyon. We can all agree that the Grand Canyon is a national treasure that should be protected. But the EPA is putting at risk thousands of skilled jobs and tens of billions of dollars of economic activity for a rule that will deliver no perceptible visibility improvement at the canyon, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Just as troubling is that environmental activists recently struck their own deal - without the input of Arizonans or their elected officials - calling for the premature shutdown of the plant. The vast majority of Arizonans oppose this deal, according to a recent poll, and they expect their legislators to defend their right to affordable energy and water.

I oppose both plans as unnecessary and costly, and I urge my colleagues in the state legislature to do the same.

Dr. Kelli Ward

State Senator, Arizona's 5th District

"The first step in protecting our planet is to recognize that man's activities has and continues to impact the environment."

It all begins at home with you. But I do not believe for one minute that YOU are going to stop using your computer, made from non-renewable materials and/or made with processes that harm the environment. And if your computer is not powered by either wave or solar generated electricity, than you are as much a hypocrite and part of the problem as as the last person I accussed of smugly lecturing others on the environment. Me? I don't pretend I am not harming the environment, while lecturing others about doing so.

Yes Jimi, education is a wonderful thing.

The World Wildlife Fund states, "If the low estimate of the number of species out there is true - i.e. that there are around 2 million different species on our planet** - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year. But if the upper estimate of species numbers is true - that there are 100 million different species co-existing with us on our planet - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year."

Tremendous numbers of species are becoming extinct by the deforestation of our rain forests alone. Proliferation of wind mills is having a major impact on bird populations. And it is only reasonable to believe the growth in the burning fossil fuels to serve mankind has and will continue to affect our planet. What about the environmental impact of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster?

The first step in protecting our planet is to recognize that man's activities has and continues to impact the environment. Are there not better ways to provide energy that will lessen the damage - more fuel efficient cars, better public transportation, vast expansion of solar and wave energy, etc.?

@trained observor

"Instead we are stuck with outdated systems that pollute."

Regarding the ovomit administrations pandering to tree huggers by going after coal fired power plants. As usual, you are not a very well trained observor it seems I found this easily. It's from the EPA:

"“The EPA does not anticipate that this proposed rule will result in notable CO2 emission change,” the agency writes in its proposal to limit greenhouse gas emissions."

Source: epa (dot) gov

So what is your next BS Go Green Energy excuse, other than it will make you feel good as you harm the environment and lecture others about it?

Amazing how you just keep coming back for more.

"BIG PROFITS! That *IS* What matters to the people in Arizona!! Just start a poll and you'll see that!"

That is quite a ridiculous claim from an out of state liberal. Can you prove it? I am sure you can make up your own poll, just follow the directions in your little playbook. Maybe you can get paid a little extra.

Again read article one section 8 of the constitution and show where they can do SS. Not on the list they can not do it, don't care what the supreme court says, they are wrong. Most of what the federal government does is unconstitutional. most of what they do is not on the list of what they can do.

Big Money is *always* what MATTERS!

BIG PROFITS! That *IS* What matters to the people in Arizona!! Just start a poll and you'll see that!

“Anson's Nephew - You lie as I have never given a time this country will fall.”

Ahh, come on, you told us here and in the radio chat room that the country and our dollar were going to collapse in the Spring of 2010, followed by the fall of 2010, followed by the Summer of 2011 and that went on until 2012 when you suddenly changed your tune.

“No I do not go to doctors,…”

So actually you do not understand how Medicare billing works because you never go the doctor. Got it.

“SS will stop as soon as our dollar fails which will be soon.”

And there you go again with that same old hyperbolic nonsense.

“By the way SS is unconstitutional.”

Uhh, the Supreme Court differs with you on that.

“People like me were forced to pay into it just as people today are forced to pay into it and they won't get a penny of their money back.”

More nonsense. I remember the righties back in the 70s screaming SS would not be there when we reached retirement age and yet there it is, coming in every month.

You lie as I have never given a time this country will fall.
No I do not go to doctors, maybe why I am so healthy. Will not do poison prescription drugs. As someone who is supposed to be up on the news you should know SS is in deep trouble. SS will stop as soon as our dollar fails which will be soon.
I also notice you do not respond the corrupt unconstitutional government doing much that they should not be doing. By the way SS is unconstitutional. People like me were forced to pay into it just as people today are forced to pay into it and they won't get a penny of their money back.
By your answers I would say you are part of this countries problem.

“Anson's Nephew - SS is in deep trouble because the government steals from it.”

Still wrong no matter how many time righties post it.

“Medicare I have emergency use only and will never use it.”

Really? As Frankless likes to tell me, “I call BS on that.” Go to the doctor, they bill Medicare.

“I expect to see SS disappear any time now.”

Not going to happen. Republiscums predicted the same thing back in the 30s and son-of-a-gun SS has never missed a payment – in over ¾ of a century.

“I expect to see my retirement pension disappear any time now.”

That will be the fault of the company you worked for.

“I expect to see this country fall any time now.”

You started that rant five years ago giving specific times when it would happen and as the dates passed you suddenly went to “any time now.” What a joke.

“I expect to see war here in this country soon.”

See paragraph above.

“…I have a license Plate that allows me to park in the handicapped parking which I rarely use.”

You have it, that’s all I said.

History is about to repeat it self one more time.
Yes I have a license Plate that allows me to park in the handicapped parking which I rarely use.It is for my wife and she has a electric cart so she rides. The plate is from the state not the federal government anyway. Not the federal governments job to require handicapped plates. In fact most of what the federal government is unconstitutional. Read article one section 8 of the Constitution. Not in that list not their job.

"Not one thing the government does works like they say it will, always ends up in a big mess."

And yet you draw social security benefits, use Medicare and have a handcapped placard (or plate). How're those working out for you?

As to Ms Ward, she's like a silly little girl "playing" at being a Senator. we will be so much better off when she is tossed out of office.

I gather from many comments against Kelli Ward that you people are for taking away jobs. Any thing the government is involved in will cost you more money, more jobs, loss of rights and freedom. Not one thing the government does works like they say it will, always ends up in a big mess.

Screwed up gobbledygook to some perhaps, but to rational minds and concerned spirits, Gore's book and others are calls to action before something really disastrous happens and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

I believe the bible says that god gave man dominion over all the living creatures, which means they were put into our custody and care, to husband carefully and to preserve life, not destroy it. Just FYI, man was not made in the image of god. Gods were created by us in our own image -- or more precisely, caricatures of ourselves. This is a good thing. It means that when we perceive god, we are perceiving a reality of ourselves.

Sen. Ward, you speak the truth. O's EPA, with all the "czars" that he gave "unlimited power" to WITHOUT congressional supervision, is one of the most dangerous and job killing agencies.
Remember, just before O was elected, he promised us that our energy costs would skyrocket!
I've read too many stories on the conservative news sites, where farmers and ranchers cannot use their own land, since the EPA has declared it "wetlands" or "natural waterways"..........that "waterway" was a dry wash that the owners wanted to keep clear of weeds. Agenda 21 at its best!
Oh, on todays news, so far only 67 Bald Eagles have been killed by wind turbines......millions of other birds too.
Thank you for trying to save our state and jobs.

The basis for all EPA regulations with respect to climate change is a false belief that higher levels of CO2 would be harmful. They know this is false but use this to give them control over one of the larges segments of our economy - ENERGY. This is socialism with control replacing ownership of the means of production, plain and simple. Democrats seek to control / rule us rather than serve us.

What an absolutely ridiculous remark. The water and earth are not dying.

Backed up by science and facts? Hardly. I read or tried to read Algore's Earth in the Balance incidentally and it was the most screwed up gobbledygook I have ever read.

Why don't you try to get on with the obama administration? You would fit right in. They also think animals are more important in the pecking order than the way the Bible teaches it. Humans, made in the image of God, animals UNDER them.

DENISE bENSUSAN,

The planet IS NOT dying.

There is less pollution now than there was in the 1950's and 1960's.

There are more deer and wild animals than then.

Another bit of info for you

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reported this year, that the world has 1 million more square miles of ice than last year.

Leaked documents show that governments which support and finance the IPCC are demanding more than 1,500 changes to the report’s ‘summary for policymakers.’

Hard to kill a good scam. But the facts are all the global warming, earth dying hype is just crap.

Bad thing is though, an ice age will kill more people than global warming ever would.

Educate yourself.

We have plenty of options for wind and solar power here but people would like to stay stuck in the past. The cost of alternative power sources keeps dropping. Instead we are stuck with outdated systems that pollute. And new projects create new jobs. Ward please leave office. You serve no one except your "elite" buddies.

Its kinda funny how on the one hand the Republican run BOS and City council want us to improve tourism as it will help us all. But those same people don't seem to want to protect our biggest tourist draw. The Grand Canyon. Why would any intelligent person want to grant permits to mine anywhere close to it. Can we really believe mining companies who have lied time and time again about worker safety and how many jobs would actually be created. When their done taking what they want from the state of Arizona they will move on and let the rest of us pay to fix what they do. I think that the Canyon belongs to America not just the people who happen to live by it. It is time we think of ourselves as Americans and as Americans the whole country is our responsibility. So if you want to believe the mining lobby and the people they buy like Ms Ward go ahead but at least Kelli has a good reason. THEY GIVE HER MONEY. And by the way I think there just might be a few tourist that would come to Arizona to look at the Mexican Gray wolves if we had any.

Dr. Kelli Ward:

It is no surprise that there was no input. That is the modus operandi of this administration.

In fact, we need the entire EPA dismantled, fumigated and start over from the bottom up. Or just leave them dismantled for the EPA has done more harm to our country than any good.

Like the UN, I would consider them entirely worthless except for the great damage they do.

If I were a magic genie and could rid us instantly of things, this would be the first five. Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Harry Reid, U. N, EPA

Just Wondering, wonder no more.

The Feds are trying to take control over AZ.

To do that they have to remove our ability to operate independently and rely on our UN-reliable government for all things.

Introducing "endangered" species like..uhh..let's see..oh yeah, Mexican wolves is another way the government can control state and local government and confiscate land.

Taking away jobs, utilities and eventually food and water rights is part of the program too..
