Letter: Patriot made an impression

On Nov. 9, we were participating in the Veterans Parade down on Northern Avenue. There was a lady viewing the parade, standing all by herself, who brought tears to my eyes when we passed by.

She was an elderly lady with her oxygen on, standing at full attention with her right hand over her heart.

It brought a strong reminder to me of what our country used to be.

Bless her heart, whoever she was! I shall remember the beautiful picture she made for as long as I live.

Apologies...I must have mis-read your post. It clearly says era.

@ Stokes.....undoubtedly, you posted your comment hastily, without seeing that I had used the "era" term. I have almost posted comments hastily a couple times without reading the post upon which I was commenting carefully enough. It's a dangerous thing to do when responding to Bob Moore! Moving on here, only an idiot would not see some things which should give courage to even the flawed and faint-hearted amongst us. What I mean - as conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer even said yesterday - is that this government is absolutely out of control, making the law up as they go along. This is also taking place at street level with law enforcement. I never said I was perfect, but upon that premise (of our imperfections, and the hesitancy they expect us to practise towards resolute stands) they do monstrous things. I intend to stand in the way, as best as I can, with the modest time I have remaining upon this earth.

@Stokes.....please point out where I ever stated here that I was in Vietnam. I understand the term "era" and have always tried to be careful in using it when applicable. I was drafted in 1970 at age 20 and spent 21/2 years overseas, most of it in Europe with a minor diversion in Israel at Yom Kippur in 1973 (they lost their air force, their tank commander told the nation's leadership to go commit an unnatural act and proceeded to invade Egypt, and so the Russians had amassed 7 airborne divisions to seize the Suez Canal). I accept your thanks, keeping in mind that wherever we are sent and whatever our duty assignment, we went knowing that we might not come back, believing that this country is worth it. And that, sir, is why I will keep writing, even amidst the most enmity-laden atmosphere. Especially then, as a matter of fact.

Phil....
I could very well be mistaken, but I thought you were never in country? Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else. If not... Vietnam ERA vet is more appropriate. Still deserve thanks, no matter what.

@mr. Sutherland.....Homeland Security isn't planning on invading Canada with all their new weaponry. And it's an absolute developing phenomenon that the term "hate" is being applied to principles (or beliefs, if you will) held sincerely. From a Vietnam-era veteran who didn't run away, and won't now.

maybe she was paying respect to what the flag was SUPPOSED to represent, rather than the present police state supporting the ethereal, illegal and disastrous "wars on terror".

This elderly woman is an example of what has held our country together. When the day comes we don't see her or others like her....then we can tell our country good bye.

I'm glad that this woman can still literally stand as an example to others.

God bless her, and God bless the USA!

We also participated in the Veteran's Day Parade. We commented on this LADY when we passed her. She stood there with Respect for the every American Flag that passed her.
