Letter: The advantages of death by heroin

There is a safe and humane execution method for jurisdictions that have laws authorizing application of capital punishment.

The Oklahoma execution of Clayton Lockett in April was officially aborted, but then Lockett died of a heart attack. Cruel, certainly, but not that unusual.

Three recent executions in Arizona had serious problems; in the last one, convicted murderer Joseph Wood gasped and struggled for almost two hours.

The www.deathpenaltyinfo.org [website] provides an incomplete listing of over 40 botched executions since 1982. Ten are by electrocution, mostly because the first jolt did not do the job; the second jolt often produced the smell of burning flesh.

The executions by injection included problems finding suitable veins, equipment failures, and violent reactions to the drugs.

The solution is execution by heroin.

First, the drug is readily available and in common use, so no surprises.

Second, heroin produces pleasure, which is why it is so addictive. Drug overdoses usually occur because the "junkie" wants a really good time this time. The use of heroin for execution eliminates the hurdle of the "cruel and unusual" clause in the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Third, the reporting on TV and other media about "execution by heroin injection" will counter the belief of many that heroin is no big deal. Street people, high school kids, business execs, and movie stars all figure that they 'can handle it' - and as news reports remind us, that is often not the case.

The message from using heroin for executions is that "Heroin Kills."

Good solution? Heroin for executions is simple, effective, legal, fast-working - and deadly.

"I comment for one reason its my 1st amendment right, who likes it, dislikes it is no more concern to me than a gnat a minor thing!"

What makes you think you have a "right" to comment at a private website. Try actually reading the 1st Amendment. It has nothing at all with you having a "right" to do so anywhere and everywhere.

But a person who believe people in colonial times used cocaine with abandon is capable of believing anything.

I'm sorry, is reminding of a foolish thing you claimed is a historical fact come under the heading of a "personal attack"?

Looks like Executioner is a needed job opening. I've met a couple people who might enjoy the job. As I recall, a gun or steel baseball bat is all they'd want.

Really? Have any of you ever tried heroin? Did you know your heart can stop and restart under its affect? I've seen it happen. Not all get sick. Everyone has a different metabolism. I'm sure we'd have a lot more blotched.

Society is simply divided into sadists and non-sadists, takes no rocket scientist to identify either one! Like Jesus when one has to answer to ones own inner self one can lie to the entire world about ones motives, issues but condemned of their own souls a sadist gets angry at even the hint of their inner demons!

My most amusement at any site on line in commentary sections is how folks obsess with doing the ad hominem personal attacks, thinking those they are trying to denigrate personally really are harmed or care what opinions of others whom they will never meet, have no connection have any meaning in their lives! I comment for one reason its my 1st amendment right, who likes it, dislikes it is no more concern to me than a gnat a minor thing!

I've thought a lot about and researched the using of heroin as an end of life method for myself when/if I eventually choose to take things into my own hands. It seems like a painless way to check out. I'm in severe, chronic pain in this life, going out painlessly seems an appropriate and well deserved end for me. I hope God understands...

Stories like this always bring out the sadists among us! I think many of them truly have fallen so deep into their inhumanity little hope exists for them, unless they do as the ones they hate with such vengeance commit some legal transgression and end in the very same death cell as those they find such fun determining how to kill! I think often these commentaries truly show the depraved and demented for what they are!

As any heroin user will attest, one of the side effects of it's use is immediate nausea and a passing fit of vomiting. How soon the urge to vomit subsides is related to how much the stomach has to offer.
It would be a cruel and unusual punishment to make the condemned upchuck his or her last meal. Better try again.

Excellent idea. But, I feel that execution by injection of a quart of Windex® would be more appropriate.

Guess this person is a medical doctor or not, drug induced deaths unless administered by a medical doctor always run the risk of being botched, but that aside, do not think it will matter much when the innocent are executed, there is no do over for a botched conviction, DNA evidence releases today prove our system of justice has flaws, as does our methods of execution! Costs millions in legal fees, appeals to do a execution which may take 20 or more years in many cases, ad them incarceration expenses to the bill, solution is ban death penalty, simply incarcerate, will not debate life or life without parole, its always a moot issue, since no sentence is forevert, appeals, pardons etc., but a botched conviction is forever botched as is a botched execution!
