Health & Wellness: Be your own diet 'hero'
Eunice Mesick
Health Columnist

Do you position yourself as a hero when it comes to controlling your weight - or a victim?

Take these statements - " I'll never reach my goal weight," "I've always been overweight," or "Making changes in my lifestyle won't help me now, so what's the point?" If you are making such statements, you are turning yourself into a victim.

Thinking like a victim affects your actions. If you think making changes in your behavior will not help, why would you want to make any? If you feel like you don't have the power to do anything about your weight, then you probably won't bother to take any steps to lose those unwanted pounds and inches.

It's time to start positioning yourself as a "hero"! Start taking responsibility for your weight. Accept the power you have to make better food choices and become more physically active.

What if you've never had the inclination to be physically active?

It is a big commitment to go from couch potato to routine walker, jogger, etc. However, it is possible.

One of the most important factors is that you enjoy your activity.

Another is that you don't do too much, too fast. You can break your goal into smaller, manageable goals. For example, maybe you'll be physically active for 10 minutes a day, then increase by five minutes each week until you are up to 30 to 40 minutes a day.

Or, maybe you'll just increase the number of sessions you have each day. Consider your first workout sessions as experiments. That way, you can try various forms of physical activity. Maybe you've considered aerobics, jogging, kickboxing or dancing. Try each one for about a week. Then stick with the ones you enjoy and have fun mastering them. Or, you can continue trying other activities until you find one you like.

For all the hard work you put into changing habits, give yourself a reward. You kept up with your routine last week! Treat yourself to a nonfood reward, such as a new outfit.

Add incentives to staying committed to your program. Maybe you enjoy listening to music or spending time with loved ones. Make it part of your routine! Wear headphones when you're cycling or jogging, take a walk with the kids or join an exercise class with a partner. Try any of these ways to help you enjoy your new routine and make it a regular part of your lifestyle.

Changing your attitude and believing that you have the strength to reach your weight loss goals can help you become your own hero.

If you have already made the decision to become your own hero, good for you. You can do it with the right frame of mind.
