Take the time to take care of you
Eunice Mesick
Diet Center’s tip of the week

How many times have you found yourself taking just a few minutes out of your busy schedule to eat well and to exercise?

Consider trying it - you will feel better and you will feel better about yourself.

Many of us do not focus on taking care of ourselves enough. We put other chores and scheduled events before ourselves on our list of things to take care of.

Isn't taking care of your body as important as that oil change, visiting relatives and friends, grocery shopping or anything else you may have on your schedule? It should be.

We look after the kids, the bills, the job, the pets, the house, the car, etc. Putting ourselves on our things-to-do list is not an act of selfishness. Taking care of things in our life that affect our bodies and health is important.

For example, we're all aware of the benefits exercise offers to our general health and our weight loss goals.

Yet, do you ever put exercise on your list of things to do for the day? It's just like the regular maintenance that has to be done on the house or the car. We need to think of our diet and exercise for our mind and body like the tune-up for your car. It keeps it running well and free from expensive repairs.

The human body can only burn or metabolize a certain number of calories every day. When that calorie level is exceeded, the body stores the remainder of those calories. So if an individual is eating 50 calories a day over what their body can metabolize, that individual will gain almost six pounds in one year's time.

If that goes on for five years, that will be almost a 30-pound weight gain. If that happened to you, how would you feel physically and mentally? More than likely your blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar would be elevated. Your back and feet would probably hurt and your joints would probably ache.

Taking control of your weight and health means exercising and eating right. Try to set yourself as a priority and take care of your body in the same way you take care of other aspects of your life.

You should make time to take responsibility for what you eat, how active you are and the weight you want to lose. Putting yourself first in your life is worth the time and effort it takes to adopt the healthy lifestyle that will help you manage your weight and your overall health!
