KINGMAN - Two Kingman High School seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

David Joe and Alec Gibelyou are two of approximately 16,000 high school seniors across the nation who will be competing for more than 8,300 National Merit Scholarships.

In order to enter the scholarship contest, Joe and Gibelyou had to be high school students, citizens of the United States and take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test before the end of their junior year.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corp., approximately 1.5 million students nationwide took the test last year and 50,000 students qualified.

Joe and Gibelyou were two of 16,000 students who received letters in the mail in February announcing they had made it to the semi-finals.

To become a finalist, students and their high school must submit an application with information about the student's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received.

The student must also be recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and submit their SAT scores.

According to its website, the National Merit Program expects to award 2,500 National Merit Scholarships, 1,000 corporate-sponsored merit scholarships and 4,800 merit scholarships sponsored by various universities and colleges, this year.

Each of the 2,500 National Merit Scholarships are worth approximately $2,500. The amounts of the corporate and university scholarships vary.

The National Merit Scholarship Program will start announcing some of the scholarship winners in April and will continue announcing winners through July.

Good luck to both boys. David and Alec are fine young men and have worked hard during their school careers. I hope the best for each as they will do well in any university. Keeping our fingers crosssed!
