Groups step forward to help wildlife project

Don Martin
The Great Outdoors

On April 13, there will be a conservation project at the Shadow Mountain Ranch, which is located west of Highway 93 at mile marker 148.

This project, which is located in the southern part of Unit 16A about 87 miles south of Kingman, includes the installation of a much-needed well for wildlife and livestock and is funded by the ranch owner and the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Habitat Partnership Committee.

Game and Fish is seeking volunteers to make this a great working project between the landowner and sportsmen.

Experts will be there to drill and install the other equipment associated with the well, but volunteers are needed to cut back brush and pick up debris left by the road grader, which is going to redo a road into the site.

This is a way to get into the great outdoors and show others that we, as sportsmen, are willing to help our friends and neighbors.

Knowing this is a worthwhile project, I decided to provide all of the meat for a dinner for the volunteers who help out on April 13. But I needed a group to sponsor the dinner and help out with the dinner items - buns, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and condiments, macaroni and potato salad, beans and maybe some dessert, and bottled water and soft drinks.

Almost immediately, Terry Herndon stepped up. He is the regional director for the Mule Deer Foundation and one of those responsible for getting the project funded through the Habitat Partnership Committee.

Herndon noted that he is a proponent of this project and that the Mule Deer Foundation would gladly fund the dinner.

Herndon also said that local chapter chairman John Beauchamp would be their liaison on the project.

This is going to be a fun project for the entire family, so contact John Beauchamp at (928) 715- 0085 or Johnbe@citlink.net, or me at (928) 303-9481 or awoguide@citlink.net and let us know if you are coming. We want to make sure we have enough food for everyone.

This is great for everyone. The rancher gets a taxpayer subsidized road and water project for his cattle to go along with the huge property tax breaks they already get. The trophy hunters get a water hole to bait wildlife so they don't actually have to get out of the truck and hunt. Game and Fish sell more tags to fund their management of public land and stimulate the economy with more of their cultural legacy activities.
