KINGMAN - The 19th Annual Kingman Elks Invitational Chess Tournament was held recently at the Elks Lodge.

More than 140 chess players representing La Senita, Hualapai, Palo Christi, Manzanita, Black Mountain, Kingman Middle School, the Kingman Academy of Learning, the Virtual Academy, and two home-schoolers participated. Each student played five games.

Individual medals and team trophies were awarded at the conclusion of the tournament.

The medal winners in the primary division (Kindergarten through grade 3) were:  1st, Maya Kaufman (Manzanita); 2nd, Aaron Borker (Manzanita); 3rd, Connor O'Campo (Hualapai); 4th, Chase Fluegge (Manzanita); 5th, Aaron Fluegge (Manzanita); 6th, Sasha Yee (Hualapai); 7th, Alex Green (Hualapai); 8th, Eddie Longbrake (Hualapai); 9th, Drayden Allen (La Senita); and 10th, Cole Finch (Kingman Academy of Learning).

Medalists in the intermediate division (grades 4 and 5) were: 1st, Gabe Otero (Manzanita); 2nd, Paige Cody (Manzanita); 3rd, Elissa Bruno (Manzanita); 4th, Josiah Hooper (Kingman Academy of Learning); 5th, Nick Taflan (a home, schooler playing with Manzanita): 6th, Corbin Jordison (La Senita); 7th, Ashtyn Faas (Black Mountain); 8th, Perrin Davis (Black Mountain); 9th, Logan Gomez (Manzanita); and 10th, Wyatt Parker (La Senita).

In the junior high division (grades 6-8), all medalists were students from Kingman Middle School: 1st, Nick Gross; 2nd, Josh Taflan (a home schooler playing for KMS); 3rd, Nausherwan Sarwar; 4th, Nick Oestman; and 5th, Richard Romines.

Seven team trophies were also awarded.

A team's score was calculated by adding the scores of its five highest-scoring players, with the best possible score being 25 points.

The trophy winners in the primary division were:  1st, Manzanita (21 points), coached by Chad Baitinger; 2nd, Hualapai (18½ points), coached by Bryan Lape; and 3rd, Kingman Academy of Learning (14½ points), coached by Chuck Snelling.

The intermediate trophy winners were: 1st, Manzanita (23 points), coached by Rob Findlay and assistant Alec Rose; 2nd, Kingman Academy of Learning (17 points), coached by Chuck Snelling; and 3rd, La Senita (15½ points), coached by Holly Jepson.

The only trophy awarded in the junior high division went to Kingman Middle School (18½ points), coached by Eric Oestman.
