When Donnie Ward helped start a Victory motorcycle dealership inside Martin Swanty Hyundai less than a year ago, he promised that at some point the business would have its own location.
Next month, he plans to make good on his promise.
Nestled on Stockton Hill Road near the vacant Ashley Furniture building, Desert Thunder Motorsports is under construction and set to open for business in late October or early November.
Available at the dealership will be Victory motorcycles and merchandise along with Arctic Cat ATVs and side-by-sides.
"It takes a lot of nurturing to develop a motorsports business," said Ward. "It's time-intensive. You have to go to a lot of events to support the product."
Though he's an avid motorcycle rider, Ward had no experience selling motorcycles before opening Desert Thunder Victory last November.
But things have gone well.
"We exceeded Victory's expectations at every turn," he said.
The dealership became so crowded with merchandise and people that Ward really had no choice other than opening a dedicated dealership.
To start, existing staff members will work at the new facility.
But as time goes on, Ward said he expects to hire a salesman or two. People interested in working there should keep their eyes on the classifieds, he said.
Though Ward expects to celebrate the location's grand opening with a big party that includes Arctic Cat and Victory demo trucks, no date is set in stone quite yet.
The new store will also be equipped with a full-service, V-twin repair facility, Ward said in order to offer repair services to a wide array of motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs.
