New Reader Poll: Trespassing vs. constitutional rights

A superior court judge has upheld the trespassing conviction of Mervin Fried, who refused to change out of a T-shirt that had the F-word on it that he was wearing during a Board of Supervisors meeting. Fried is running for supervisor for District 4.

• Mervin Fried's rights were violated.

• We need people like Mervin Fried to show us why a dress code is a good idea.

You lost me! His point was, we need a dress code because if not, you can get away with wearing an F shirt in a B of S meeting?

If that is it, then I agree with him. Frankly, I'm insulted that people show up to church in short shorts and halters these days. Old school here - disrespectful. Not a matter of laws, it's a matter of considering offending others.

An F shirt in a meeting definitely is offensive.

Is this what we want our children and grandchildren to learn. Freedom of speech is one thing. However, we also have the freedom to pick and chose our words. we tell the children not to say such things and then we ourselves say them. Really let's teach by example. I am sure there are more Christian ways to prove 1st amendment rights. I shouldn't have to explain why that man had a nasty word on his shirt to my kids. But I did. their response...couldn't he have said it another way?...out of the mouths of babes!!

The Supreme Court has affirmed that "reasonable" control of the 1st amendment is well within the realm of government control. E.g. Shouting "FIRE" in a crowded theater is not covered under free speech.

Showing up at a Board meeting for a position you are trying to become elected into, you probably shouldn't be wearing a shirt that says "f-word" anything.

Of course, that's akin to showing up for an interview wearing a polo shirt and cut-off jeans.

Can't wait to see the upcoming election results. I predict he MAY receive 150 votes....maybe.

This was a very childish reaction that needn't have happened.

I believe the quote is “Profanity is the effort of a feeble brain to express itself forcibly.”

I too have used profanity (heck I was in the Navy...what do you expect?) but I also consider my surroundings and people nearby. I slipped up ONCE in front of my Mother.....never again.

I think Mervin would make a great supervisor as he knows the constitution and he is not afraid to stand up for his rights. People who want more regulation and more taxes DO NOT vote for Mervin. People who want to LOSE more of their rights, DO NOT vote for Mervin. Mervin is for less taxes, less regulation and supports the constitution 100%.
All you sheep just keep voting for the people who are enslaving you. Would be a real shame to vote for someone who would be on your side.
In the last few years the people have elected people who have taken all your rights, jobs and freedom. They can now jail you forever or kill you with no trial. They can take all you own and out you in a work camp with no trial. They are about to try and take all the guns from the honest people. This is because people keep voting in crooks who want every thing you have.
Do you people know that the laws and force are in place for our president to become a dictator? We are in the very same place that Germany was when Hitler became a dictator.
Do not vote for Mervin because he is an honest good person, not the type we vote into office.

I chose 'Other'.

Yes, his 1st Amendment rights were violated. At the same time, I have to explain this to my children: why grownups sometimes behave childishly.

Intelligent people don't behave like this.

Mervin Fried's rights were violated - just like all of us are being violated in ways which should produce a backlash making Mervin's gesture look like child's play. Only then will Government learn that we do not exist at their beck and call, but that this nation's founding documents established a limited Government answerable to the people. Somehow, with daily reports of science fiction technologiies being rolled out against us - nano-drones, LRADs, etc. at the national level, and at the local level surreptitious "extra-judicial" crimes committed against the outspoken (if you don't know or believe this, keep silent at this web forum), these facts have been lost in the sewage. They destroy lives for a living and Mervin can't openly say "F---". La-la land it is, enforced by some of history's most practised liars and schemers, and thugs.

This poll only fuels the fire of a ridiculous situation that should be forgotten. I've known Mr. Freid since childhood and unfortunately he hasn't changed much in 30 years. He's had his 15 minutes of fame aand then some, can't we please just let him go play with his trains and stop making headlines and raeder polls over what shirt he's sporting.
