Reader Letter: Declare war on Electoral College

Once again this country has been screwed by the Electoral College.

The majority of this country wanted Obama out of the White House and yet he is back.

One can only guess what damage he'll do to America in the next four years. He's certainly done his share already, and the majority of us had hoped to be rid of him by now.

But, the majority no longer rules - obviously.

There apparently are forces at work about which many of us know nothing.

It's no longer about leadership by a qualified person who has the best interests of his country at heart. It's about greed and power and political posturing.

Those who voted for him were brainwashed by his charisma and empty promises. I was a registered Democrat until he came along.

I am now Republican, even though I still think highly of the Democrats - except for their poor judgment in the matter of their choice of candidate.

Maybe it's time for another Civil War.

"I'm for the Electoral College. Obama won the election by massive fraud.

We don't need to go to a popular vote. We need lying Democrats to quit committing fraud at the behest of their leader for whom they march in lock step."

Sorry Linda, the only documented cases of fraud out of this election so far have still been from Republicans. You saying something does not make it fact, sorry. Obama won, despite the best efforts of some Republicans to cheat. Deal with it, the guy you once claimed you could never vote for lost.

“Obama won the election by massive fraud.”

The only “massive voter fraud” during the election was laid directly at the feet of the Republicans that resulted in voter registration being shut down in five states. EVERY single registration obtained by the Republicans should have been torn up and discarded.

“A barely 3% margin is not overwhelming IMO.”

When examined in conjunction with other elections – i.e Bush in 2000 at 0.51%, and 2.46% in 2004 – a 3.52% is not all that shabby. Of course it is nowhere near the 7.27% Obama garnered in 2008, or the 8.51% in 1996 or even the Ronald the Dim at 9.74% in 1980, but it still is indicative of a pretty solid win considering how drastically the nation is polarized.

@ AN
Simple majority vote would be fine with me as well. Although it wouldn't have changed the results of our most recent election....I think it would minimize the crowing about "overwhelming margin" type comments. A barely 3% margin is not overwhelming IMO.

“How in anyone's mind does that make sense?”

It’s called a “majority.” Look it up. Doesn’t matter if it is one vote, one thousand or one million.

There appears to be two options – do away with the EC all together and the outdated and useless exercise or make all states adhere to the majority rules concept with all electoral votes going to the winning candidate. Personally I prefer the former.

Back to the subject of the letter...
Why not accord the same percentage of electoral votes as the popular vote.

Using CA as an example (all numbers rounded up or down per common rules) Obama would have received 33 votes with 59.3% of the vote, Romney 21 with 38.3%. Just throw that last electoral vote into a pool for the other candidates maybe?

Smaller states with less electoral votes will have no "left overs', of course...but it will still be a better representation of the overall "will of the people". It still makes smaller states votes count, as a candidate will treat each electoral vote as important...not just the majority in a state.

As it is now, 1 vote in CA (hypothetically...like the movie) could determine the winner of the election.
How in anyone's mind does that make sense?

“Next thing you know you will be claiming the inner city areas are blighted because of reasons unrelated to those who live there.”

It’s always interesting how you seem to “know” what everyone is thinking or going to say … or how they’re going to vote. As usual you’re wrong.

Next thing you know you will be claiming the inner city areas are blighted because of reasons unrelated to those who live there. Oh wait, you leftists have been using that excuse for decades.

Kingman has a good percentage of welfare parasites. But the percentage is certainly much much lower than in most inner cities. P.C. to say this? Nope. Reality? Sure is.

“You think free cell phones are a lie? Prove it.”

My reference was to your stating that votes for Obama could be bought with a free cell phone – an obvious lie since the Lifeline program has been in use for years before Obama took office. It’s always fascinating to watch FLS (not his real name) and his little BFF show up here taking things out of context and actually changing statements. What a hilarious pair they are.

"Why do you have such a problem with telling the truth?"

You think free cell phones are a lie? Prove it.

And remember you're the one who said he could find nothing about certain areas voting 100% for ovomit after doing his own "research".

"Why about a week ago one of the regular liberals right here, I think it was your BFF, was bragging that his grandmother has a free phone."

Yes, I mentioned it. I was not bragging, I was merely stating a fact. I would trust you to know the difference. You see, she worked all her life, paid into the system, and is now benefitting from that. I see no problem with that. You are doing the same thing, although you probably did not work as long to get your government handouts.

Funny to see you bash somebody for using a screen name, since I would be willing to bet my next house payment on the fact that Frank Lee Speaking is not your real name.

"cowards hiding behind computer screens....."

So says the "retired military" guy who does not use his name. It was my experiance that most of the lifers I had to work around would spend more time warming a bar stool at the nco club than working.

On-line......with a screen name? You could claim to be Sgt. York. It does not mean its true at all. I can't prove you are not, but you can't prove you are. And in many cases the ones who feel the need to mention their military career have the least to brag about.

I don't despise the country........ just the vast number of parasites in it and thier supporters.

Why about a week ago one of the regular liberals right here, I think it was your BFF, was bragging that his grandmother has a free phone. Well, free for her, but paid for by taxpayers. You know, because God forbid he or the rest of the family be expected to pay granny's phone bill....... that's someone elses job. Typical liberal mindset.

"DO ANY OF YOU PEOPLE EVER CALL YOUR SENATOR OR REPRESENTATIVE IN WASHINGTON AND VOICE YOUR OPINION-"

Well that sounds like a good old time idea, I even had one Senator, years ago, that got some action out of Commerce Department when inter-agency issues were creating catch 22 problems.
Recently, last contacts were concerning FDA removal of generic medications and replacing with patented drugs. Contacted McCain multiple times, No reply! Also contacted Jon Kyle, he did reply with ontopic reply, not just a form letter. He is quitting now. If I was willing to spend a fortune in political gifts, I might have better luck.

“@ Ansons nepwew All you do is defend the left. Do you have a solution is it keep raising taxes, and pay for programs we cant afford keep giving handouts to people that dont need them. keep creating goverment jobs that we cant pay for. Were 17 trillion in debt whats your crazy left wing solution?”

I have never denied that I defend the actions of the Obama administration because so much of what appears here from the right wing loon idiot fringe is pure garbage and lies.

Attempting to decode your post was a problem, but I think I have answers and hopefully my response will not be censored… uhh deleted as so often seems to be the case anymore.

As to taxes. It is difficult to accept your construct of “keep raising taxes” since Obama has lowered taxes consistently for nearly four years with the overall tax rates being lower than any time since the 1950s. The only actual tax increase would be to raise taxes on the wealthy back to the level of the Clinton administration when we saw 22 million jobs created, the biggest economic boom since the 1950s, a balanced budget and surplus when Clinton left office.

What “handouts” are you referring to? Please be specific so that they may be addressed.

What government jobs are you referring to? Again be specific

My answer to the debt situation would be to raise taxes on those who can best afford it, fully end the wars, cut back on military spending, cut-off corporate welfare (i.e. big oil, etc) and get the presidents jobs bills approved in order to put people to work and increase the amount of income taxes collected.

Please answer the two points mentioned and I will get back to you.

It seems no one here understands why there is an electoral college. Its to stop metropolise voters from ignoring how those in the boonies(us) vote. If popular voting was the norm then polititians could ignore places like Kingman and only swoon the big city voters. In other words if you don't live in a city your vote doesn't count. Then all the laws would be made to cater to cities like Phoenix.

The sad thing is the majority of those people in urban areas who the ground workers for BO don't even know the major issues of the time and are in fact many on some sort of subsity whether it be state level or federal level.
When you have people who don't know that Paul Ryan is white and catholic and is NOT the running mate of BO AND these people are voting??????? GOOD GRIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
