Local GOP groups may band together to face Obama fears

Suzanne Adams-Ockrassa
Miner Staff Reporter

There was much hand-wringing about the federal election at the Kingman Republican Men's Club Monday morning, but local Republicans are standing firm on their principles and may consolidate their efforts to reach independent voters.

"I don't know if we have lost the country, but really I think we have two choices. We can flee or we can fight," said club president Laurence Schiff. "Costa Rica was looking really, really good for a time.

"But this the United States of America. It is still the greatest place in the world to live. But, I'm not really hopeful about the future."

He suggested getting the leaders of all three local Republican groups - the Men's Club, the Women's Club and the Republican Forum - together to talk about possibly consolidating into one group.

A couple of people who are also members of the Women's Club and the Forum said they would bring it to the attention of the leadership of those clubs.

"We have to try and recapture the people who didn't vote for us. We have to do it without becoming the Democratic Party," Schiff said. "We have to do it without becoming the party of, 'We give you free stuff. Just not as much.' "

He also suggested encouraging more women, independents and students to come to the club's meetings and the local Republican Headquarters. Schiff also recommended working with Mohave Community College to create a young Republicans club.

Others suggested moving the Republican Men's Club meetings to the evenings and cutting the price for lunch or dinner so more people could attend.

Schiff pointed out that many older residents are not comfortable driving in the dark and that the Elks Lodge, the club's current meeting location, sets the price for meals.

Schiff illustrated his concerns by citing rumors that Democrats drove casino workers to the polls in Nevada and scared them into voting for President Barack Obama.

He also hinted that it may be hard to get Obama out of office in 2016, citing rumors that the president plans to rewrite the Constitution to allow himself a third term.

This is not something Obama could do on his own. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, added in 1951, prevents people from serving more than two terms as president.

In order to remove the amendment, Obama would have to get two-thirds of the both houses of Congress or two-thirds of the states to agree to amend the Constitution, and then the new amendment would have to be approved by three-fourths of the states.

Schiff also complained that the "mainstream media" has created an image in people's minds that the Republican Party is the party of "Big Business," Schiff said.

This isn't true, he said, and claimed that there are more black and Hispanic people serving in the Republican Party then there are in Democratic Party.

He also said the wealthiest members of Congress are mostly Democrats.

According to the Pew Research Center, Obama won 93 percent of the black vote and 71 percent of the Hispanic vote this year.

Roll Call released its figures for the 50 richest members of Congress in 2011 on Friday. According to the Capitol Hill newspaper, the 50 richest members of Congress in 2011 included 32 Republicans and 18 Democrats.

The top two richest members of Congress at that time were Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas and Rep. Darrell Issa from California, both Republicans.

Hey, idea for bi-partisan cooperation:
If Brewer is able to change the AZ constitution to allow her (God-forbid) another term, perhaps she could call her friend the Big O and advise him so he could have a third term in the White House.
Gee Schiff, perhaps you could broker it.

When I saw some posters refer to the subject of the article as Dr. Schiff, I googled him to see where his delusions might have come from. I was astounded to see that he calls himself a psychiatrist (albeit one who graduated from a medical school in Mexico). Psychiatrists are usually doctors who help people get a firm grasp on reality, not someone who starts out delusional and sinks into paranoid fantasies.

Poor, whining Republicans. You have your little corner of old, white American here in Mohave County, but the rest of the country is changing for the better, and old white men are gradually losing their grip on the power to run everyone else's life, as well as their grip on reality.

@Is this for real....I'll bet you wouldn't even care if Obama showed up here to pass out free cell phones to every wandering cow along Highway 68. If he did, I would advocate Arizona's secession from NAFTA or at least the League of Women Voters, and have the entire Miner staff arrested for arson. There, that should answer your baseless slander against this fine continent.

I'm Independent:

I would like to answer your "America is sick of politicians that refuse to work together".

Obama is taking us over the cliff at breakneck speed. You want us to go with him only at a slower speed? There IS no working w/the Dems. You see, they refuse to work w/Republicans but because the press is in the pocket of the Dems, they manage to always report it as just the opposite and ignorant Americans believe them. I would rather die than work with the Democrat party of today. They lie, cheat, steal, kill the unborn, hate israel, push class warfare and everything in between. They even convinced dumb women there is a war on women by Republicans. Hard to believe but they bought it hook, line and sinker - sent a liar out named Sandra Fluke who pretended to be someone she was not. They bought that too, then lied and said Republicans had locked her out of testifying before a committee when truthfully, she had no qualifications to do so and the meeting was already set up.

All you can do with Dems is try to block their destruction until we get back in w/some sanity. Remember, Republicans were actually locked out of rooms concerning obamacare. Noone read it, locks on doors were changed to keep Republicans out, like a college prank rather than grown elected men. We can only imagine Washington or Jefferson doing something so infantile.

Another example. Susan Rice went on 5 Sunday shows and lied or was complicit in a Bengazi cover up so 97 Republicans requested she NOT be nominated for Secy of State as they feel she is incompetent. The Dems response? Incompetent is a code word for "lazy black". Huh? Work with THIS? Forget it!!

These comments are absolutely unbelievable. It's like a soap opera of imbeciles, wailing away, interrupted by a frighteningly rare comment making sense, as if it were a commercial break.

I get the feeling the world could melt down completely — total economic collapse, two or three full blown nuclear wars raging, anarchy in every major city in America and the federal government in the midst of being overthrown — and as long as there was still an internet, we'd still see the cast of kdminer.com, with mindless insults and name-calling, gross misinformation and a serious case of 50-first-dates syndrome, or maybe it's just a love of repeating oneself?

I swear to God, if the government ever bans the internet, it will be because of numbskulls like these, staggering around their keyboards like drunken stooges, throwing chairs and beating their chests.

If I ever return to these brain-draining rants, it will be following a global collapse of the electric grid, just to see if by some weird twist of cosmic fate these pages have defied the laws of physics and still exist, with these blowhards ignoring the fact that not only is the game over, life as we knew it is too.

If ignorance truly is bliss, then you cretins have cornered the market on euphoria.

Un-freaking-believable.

What a bunch of crybabies. If your this afraid Obama is going to kill the nation. Do us all a favor and just hang yourselves.

The rest of us dont need you whining and forecasting doom and gloom because your prince lost.

The GOP lost this election two years ago by its own blatant arrogance. America is sick of politicians that refuse to work together or set out to "ruin" the others administrations.

Get over it you bunch of pansies.

Your really showing your true colors as sore losers and very anti American.

Remember when America used to work together and was a strong world wide producer? That's the only thing that will put us back in line. So far the GOP still cant see how they lost. That's truly amazing.

Even Newt is saying the party is way out of touch with the people. The GOP ran a four year smear tactic and is now reaping the rewards for acting like brats.

You want an answer. Look in the mirror. If the GOP refuses again to at least try working with the Dems. They will lose again in 2016. Its time for our politicians to do their jobs.

@Linda

Do I have to come here and debunk your half truths and misinformation now?

For instance, the Iraq War. More Dems voted against it than for it. Why did you leave that out?

"Do you realize obama stoled $700 B out of Medicare to pay for obamacare that over half of America is terrified of and doesn't want and which will further destroy us?"

Obama stole nothing from Medicare and you know it. He is stopping over payment and wasteful spending in Medicare. Big Difference. Plus, no stats support your "claim" that half of America is afraid of it. Must be part of the more than half of voters that voted for him lol.

"Do you understand obama has added 1 Trillion in debt each and every year and will continue and destroy your grandchildren's future? Almost as much debt as all other POTUS's put together?"

The biggest chunk of the debt added under Obama is from Bush's unfunded wars he started. Oh, and just for the record, Obama has BARELY added more than Bush, not what you claimed.

You are entitled to your opinions, but not your own facts.

When it comes to evil the Right came the closet in recent history to putting evil in the form of Willard the Money Hider in the white House. You were blinded by the bling and flash of Satan’s son.

“The Republican platform is against slaughtering millions of the unborn …”

No, the Republican platform is to put the government in the bedroom and doctor’s office of every American.

This started with Bush? Do you even know who Barney Frank is? Do you know anything about Fannie and Freddie? Loans to people who didn't qualify and couldn't afford the payments?

Do you understand obama has added 1 Trillion in debt each and every year and will continue and destroy your grandchildren's future? Almost as much debt as all other POTUS's put together?

Do you realize obama stoled $700 B out of Medicare to pay for obamacare that over half of America is terrified of and doesn't want and which will further destroy us?

Do you know obama and his socialist/marxist/communist friends never stop lying, run ads in Mexico explaining to people how to come here illegally and get freebies, has a website under the government illegally to do the same?

Do you understand unemployment is the same as when he came into office...or worse and he said if that was so - he would be a one termer?

Do you realize nearly half the country is on food stamps?

Do you realize our credit rating has been downgraded?

Do you realize the world is laughing at us, muslim jihadists are emboldened world wide and ex-socialist countries think we have lost our marbles?

Yeah, Bush's fault all right. Your thinking is what got him in in the first place. Both sides voted for the Iraq war incidentally.

I read the article and it sure sounded to me like Doctor Schiff was trying to do exactly what the Democrats or Liberals and their lordy President have been lip sinking during the last four years. Schiff is trying to organize a larger group of Republicans to better represent the Republican base at large. His reason of course is to better communicate the conservative ideals to the average citizen, reach across the table and find some common ground to infuse into the pathetically polarized dialogue we have all grown so tired of, on both sides of the table. Whether you understand his fear or not, its real and represents the fear of almost half the country. Whether you understand his sarcasm or not the negative response is just a distraction and a default attitude, now on steroids, that the minority voice of "takers" has prevailed. I'd remark to all you naysayers, why not put your real name where your mouth is, if you want credibility. At this point only myself and Sherwood have had the fortification to do so.

One way to fight evil, which is where the left is now, is through reading the Scriptures.

September 17, 1917, The New York Times published a story with a letter from Col. Theodore Roosevelt endorsing the American Bible Society as the best way to get the Scriptures he lived by in the hands of all our troops. He said:

"Every soldier and sailor of the United States should have a testament and the American Bible Society is the organization through which the work can be done in the best shape". That still applies today.

Away from home, unsure of the Commander in Chief at the current time, Scriptures are a great comfort.

You can give a secure gift online at AmericanBible.org/Troops or mail gifts payable to American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023 or call Toll Free 1-866-895-4448.

No, I'm not joking. "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and heal their land".

There's a promise Republicans can stand on. The Republican platform is against slaughtering millions of the unborn while the Dems push it with all their might. Let's stand on this promise together.

If God was good enough for Geo Washington who knelt in the forest in the bitter cold, praying on his knees for hours to our God for help, it surely must be good enough for us today. Consider the circumstances he was in at the time. They were about as lousy as they could get. He prevailed. We won. We owe this great man some time on our knees. They gave their all. WE MUST DO THE SAME FOR THE GOOD OF THIS WORLD.

Well Mr. Schiff, perhaps you'd like to discuss the "rumors" that the local Republicans only took new voters registrations that registered as Republican whenever someone when to them to register to vote.

Article comment by: Please Select Your New Country Carefully

The very foundation of the New Tea Bagger Republican Party was detailed in Laurence Schiff parroting Mitt's summary of why the election went so badly. Instead of looking at its platform, it's stance on issues, it thinks it didn't do enough to "buy votes". The foundation of this party is all about money, how to buy votes, how to use religion or Rubio (pushed out as a token Hispanic), to win an election. They just don't understand that Americans really do love this county and don't appreciate being abused, talked down to, lied to by what has taken over this once proud party. The voters heard our president constantly reach out a hand, while the Joe Wilsons of the party call him a liar, the McCains of the party condemned everything he did, and the wacko governors (Brewer #1) countered every attempt to jump start the economy with massive public sector layoffs.

"It's hard to beat the left wing media who consistently paint the right as monsters, the giveaways of the left as opposed to real jobs and hard work Romney pushed and then the outright fraud obama has used during both elections to get into office in the first place. The old Democrat party has simply turned into the party of lies and fraud. It's that simple."

Not sure which is funnier, that Schiff believes the stuff he said, or the fact the person responsible for the above quote believes what she said AND what Schiff said.

Both are equally scary prospects.

In reading many of the comments, there seemed to surface some common themes. - repub listen to Fox,- repub need to change,-Dr. Schiff is stodgy,- the sky is falling, etc.
What I didn't see by those commenting were positive suggestions of change. Rather there was criticism of someone trying to move forward, while explaining some causes of failure.
For the commenting critics, either you're happy with the way the country is heading or if not, you're part of the problem. That is to say...if you're not the solution, you're part of the problem. Help with positive ideas, assuming this is what you want.
Clearly there is room for all of us to participate, we just need to do it....but I could be wrong
