Kingman High teacher on leave pending investigation

Ahron Sherman
Miner Staff Reporter

KINGMAN - A Kingman High School teacher who is being investigated for a potentially inappropriate relationship with a student or students was put on leave earlier this week pending the outcome of the probe.

"We're taking this very seriously," said Roger Jacks, the superintendent for Kingman Unified School District.

The Miner is not naming the teacher yet because the person hasn't been charged.

Jacks said a student came forward Monday with a complaint regarding the teacher. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office was notified, and the teacher was immediately put on leave.

Once the investigation was launched and the district and MCSO began asking questions, more students came forward with comments about the teacher.

"We're working closely with students and teachers," Jacks said. "The investigation is ongoing."

"Just so you know, Town Crier, got his information about the Kingman Academy teacher, from the DAILY MINER! The teacher is no longer teaching at the academy and he wasn't in Arizona when he got arrested. They just mentioned he was previously a teacher at the academy. So, maybe, just maybe... you need to get your facts straight."

Seems like my facts are straight then. You yourself said the teacher reported on in the Miner was no longer teaching at the Academy and the incident he is being investigated and charged over did not happen here. Hmmmm....seems to be exactly what I said. No teacher at the Academy has been busted for this.

Okay all you yokels defending KOAL against what you think Town said. TC was pointing out the various problems with both KUSD and KOAL. TC then calls for the firing of Jacks. TC didn't say Jacks headed KOAL. It would have been better if TC separated his/her thoughts with separate paragraphs. Either that or also called for the firing of whoever is the head of KAOL.

Actually I'll match TC and go one further. We never did hear how KAOL handled the girls who put something in their teacher's lunch resulting in her sickness. So let's replace KAOL's superintendent. (

And why are the good tax payers paying for 2 superintendents and administration in Kingman?)

If you read the paper you would know about what Town Crier is referring. All in the miner in the last month or so.

Article comment by: Agree With Support

I agree with both Educator of Your Youth and Original Kingman Resident. It does seem like a lot of bad press has been out recently about our school districts. I cannot understand why anybody would be inappropriate with kids, but it does happen. When you are employing hundreds to thousands of people, there are those that will get through the systems in place. It does not mean that 99% of the teachers, administrators and support staff are NOT doing their job. The vast majority of people in education are doing their best, trying their hardest to educate the children of this community. They are doing so in a fair and appropriate manner. I truly hope that parents and community members rally around those who are doing their jobs, and are thankful that the school districts are taking appropriate action for those who are not. Encourage your children to speak up! Volunteer in the schools and see what is going on! We have to work together as a community to make sure all of our children have a good, safe, worthwhile educational experience.

This is all so sad. My heart goes out to the students and there families that are affected by this. It is sad that no matter how hard we try as parents, we cant keep our children safe at all times. It makes you want to homeschool.

This paper reported a past administrator at the academy getting caught

@ town crier
This town is run by the good ol boys so jacks won't go anywhere. Trust me. There are more reasons than just what you listed for him to go.

@Town Crier

I can tell you right now, it has NOTHING to do with Jacks. Having been a student at KHS from 02-06 I can tell you that this comes to NO surprise. I can think of at LEAST 4-5 teachers that had inappropriate relationships with students while I went to school there.

I think I'm reading the same article and I'm pretty sure that it say, "A Kingman High School teacher who is being investigated". At least the KDM used a little common sense this time and didn't post a name or a picture so he/she can be publicly dragged through the coals before the investigation is complete! Most of you sound like a bunch of old biddies that have nothing better to do than to wait in the shadows so you can ridicule someone.

I am happy that the school to action right away.yes It is hard when you hear that someone that we trust with our children may have doen them wrong but it hurts the other employees who work with these people.not to mention their families also.The superintendent,administreators and board are just as hurt and horrorified at these actions as well. you can not blame everyone for one persons actions.. they do screen people.but if they have no past crimes how is the district to know they are bad people.my hubsand worked with a man for 5 yrs never suspected a thing...he was arrested for repeated offences against young boys.it shocked my husband.it could easily be a coworker, friend or family member.so dont blame others who are there to help our kids.

It's appalling that student-teacher relationships can go on unnoticed.

@Town Crier

The new administration at KHS has my undying respect. They've brought changes to the school that the previous administration could not. Personally, I am a fan of his no-nonsense attitude, and I'm glad that this is finally being taken seriously.

@Nice Chuckle,

@Town Crier.... Other than that, Town Crier, you need to realize that the employees go through a fingerprint clearance before they are employed. Maybe instead of pointing fingers at Roger Jacks, maybe you should applaud the school district for investigating and getting the process started. And you want to say that Roger Jacks is employing and supporting administrators who bully and intimidate, what do you think you are doing right now?

Blaming Roger Jacks is like blaming the mayor when a city employee breaks the law. Roger Jacks has no control over the stupidity of an employee. Maybe making people for their actions is the way to go.

"potentially inappropriate relationship"

Nowhere here does it say sexual. There are many ways this could have happened.

I knew a girl that had a teacher that saw something more in her and gave her more personal attention and encouragement. They even had meals together sometimes. He gave her rides home and she stayed at his house a few times. Sounds pretty suspicious doesn't it?

Did I forget to mention her home life was crap and that the teacher was married with 2 kids and his wife was also involved? It was also 30 yrs ago when teachers were allowed to actually care about their students. It would never fly nowadays and perhaps that's a problem.

"Innocent until..."...anyone remember that? Maybe I'm wrong...I hope not.

Ok, first off I would like to say that I find it amusing that from the majority of the comments people are confirming this guys is guilty and placing the blame on Mr. Jacks.

I am not saying the guy is not a perv or didn't do it, but what happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Having come from a background of education (k-8) I have seen students get mad at teachers over grades and other things and make acquisitions to deflect other things such as grades or the students behavior being pointed out.

I am just saying that Jacks did what he could to protect the children if the teacher is guilty, and if he isn't shame on us all for assuming he is a pedophile.

@Nice

There was a story about a former employee of one of the local schools up north somewhere messaging some young kids and 'grooming' them or had some sort of sexual situation with them. You read the online paper enough, you should've seen it as it was 'front page' of the online edition the day the story broke in Kingman.

Article comment by: Educator of Your Youth

I am a Kingman educator in the district. I am not defending the acts of indiscretion about the accused, however, Roger Jacks and administrators across this district have my support. The school I work at has gone through a complete 180 for the better since we've acquired a new administrator. He is a hard, but fair man who uses new techniques for discipline and is trying to take our failing school and make it a success again. It's a tough job that administrators have hiring teachers who make barely enough to scrape by in our economy, and yet are committed to educating your youth. Be thankful for that. Teachers and administrators alike have one of the most stressful jobs in all employment and are always under the microscope of scrutiny for all acts good and bad. Kingman, support your schools.

@ Crier

All adults working at the schools are required to get a fingerprint clearance prior to starting their job.

If a person doesn't have a prior arrest for pedopdila, how is Mr Jacks or anyone else supposed to know they are a pedophile? It's not like a pedophile will volunteer that information during an interview.

What is important is that the school district put the teacher on leave and started an immediate investigation.

Not sure what you are reading, but where did you get an educator from the Academy got caught?

Also, Jacks would have nothing to do with the academy anyway, so that would not apply to him.

@ town, This man is just trying to do a job and can't be in the minds of every district employee. Blame the social decline that this country has been in for years and the distruction of traditional family life being supported by the current administration.

Town Crier, From your post one has to assume you are filling the paperwork to recall all school board members. If not perhaps you can let us all know when you intend to do this and get off the high horse and do something rather then complain for Kingmanites to do it for you.
