Reader Letter: Union guys don't vote GOP

I am Union. Therefore, I do not vote Republican.

It was a Democratic controlled government that gave us the right to join together and bargain collectively for wages and working conditions, that gave us Social Security, unemployment benefits and other social safety-net programs, and in 1965 Medicare, also work-place health and safety regulations through OSHA.

Unions gave us a better standard of living. Unions gave us the eight-hour day, the forty-hour week - job security means the right to not be fired from a job without cause - living wage means higher negotiated raises pushed up community wages - negotiated benefits that spread to non-union workers as well, holiday pay, vacation pay, health and life insurance, pension benefits, and even the bathroom break.

Republicans are almost universally anti-union, ergo anti-worker. How anyone who has ever benefited from any of the above can vote Republican is beyond me!

I'm a Republican and have belonged to three unions. I have gone out three different times on strike and have lost almost everything in doing so.
The unions never did anything for me and when in crisis they will not back you up or will tell you they have no funds but yet have plenty to donate to their favorite candidate, who in turn gives them money and contracts.
Unions have long out lived their usefulness and should be run out of the country as they are now only made up of left wing ideologs who are only interested in their own benefits and to heck with how it effects the country.
Try to find something in this country that is made here and you will not find very much and you will say it is the corporations fault.
I say your full of crap as if the corporations could make a profit here don't you think they would stick around?
Until unions figure out they are the ones destroying this country we will continue to go down hill and become a third world nation and then where will the unions get their 80 dollars an hour for putting a nut on a bolt or retireing at 50 with full pay? etc etc
Unions 60 years ago were a neccesary evil but now they are just evil.....get rid of them!

Great letter. I've always been surprised by the anti-union stance of so many (the vast majority) of my co-workers over the years. This is especially the case in right-to-work-for-less states.

I am very grateful that I retired recently since it is clear the pendulum has swung pretty far in the wrong direction.

The young workers still in the work force will have to undergo so much abuse that they will finally demand fair treatment and/or union representation. That will take years of lower and lower salaries, demand for higher and higher output and productivity, and verbal and even more serious abuse case upon them.

I too was a union employee in my youth when I worked part time for UPS while going to college. I was a Teamster member then. While doing that I witnessed the goons from back east who told us how to vote on the new contract, offering us all free beer to get us in a good mood. At that time(60's) I didn't know how the union operated. I didn't know the unions and Democrat Party were in bed together. I didn't know all taxpayers were footing the bill for only union member retirements. I didn't know there were special laws allowing union protestors to be physically abusive with non-union employees with nothing done about it.

Yes, there was a time unions were good for blue collar emmployees. But now they are bankrupting our whole country where they are in control. And they never seem to know when to back off from more demands, to the point a company can't compete in it's industry any more and the union employees lose their jobs, or cities controlled by union employees file for bankruptcy because they can't meet union wages any more with incoming funds.

There are many union enmployees who don't automatically vote Democrat no matter what.

There is no doubt that unions bought a great deal of good to our society. But like the pendulum it can swing to far to one side. The American auto industry and present day Detroit are an example of what happens when the pendulum swings to far. I blame management equally for this disaster as they gave the unions far to much.

As for your Social Security claim it's pure rhetoric and not based in fact. When the votes were counted 54 Democrats had opposed the bill. Thirty Republicans opposed. Social Security was a bi-partisan effort! See http://www.ssa.gov/history/tally.html

The dynamic of the Republican has changed greatly from my day as a union member. The old southern Democrat is now a Republican. Many, many union members who are of the religious right or gun rights persuasion vote Republican.

As a member of management in the automotive sector we loved the UAW. We got everything union members got. Four to six weeks vacation, retirement at 55 with free medical. In all honesty we knew it couldn't continue forever. It didn't!

And now unions, whose time has passed because most jobs now give you all those same benefits, are pricing themselves out of jobs. Once we needed buggy whips too.

And today's unions are violent!!!

"How anyone who has ever benefited from any of the above can vote Republican is beyond me!"

That's pretty easy to answer. When people don't vote on issues that are important but rather vote with hate, or discrimination. If anyone believes this doesn't happen then they are fools.

As my Dad used to say, "No working man ever votes for a Republican, because Republicans hate workers."

Pete.....gimme....gimme.....gimme, thats all your dems and unions know. Thanks to the unions driving up wages, and therefore cost of all goods/services/homes, etc.....it now takes a husband and wife both working outside the home just to get by. Leaving the children home alone, or with baby sitters, no supervison, ergo a mess.
Re the dems, you can thank them for putting this country in 16 trillion dollar debt and growing ever second. We will NEVER EVER turn this machine around.......Europe here we come !!
