A 27-year-old Kingman father was arrested this week on child abuse charges as his 1-year-old son remains on life support after being transferred Tuesday to a children's hospital in Phoenix.

Codie Levi Mejia is charged with felony child abuse and domestic violence by aggravated assault for allegedly inflicting injuries on his son that are consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Kingman Police Sgt. Bob Fisk said the child was first transported by ambulance to Kingman Regional Medical Center on Christmas Eve. The child was then airlifted to a children's hospital in Las Vegas before being airlifted again earlier this week to specialists at a children's hospital in Phoenix.

The child is on life support and cannot breathe on his own. Fisk said doctors have told police that the child "may never have a purposeful life again."

"Right now he has no purposeful movement," he said.

Fisk said that when interviewed by police, Mejia told detectives he had been smoking Spice, a synthetic form of marijuana, and awoke to find that his son had fallen off the bed. That's when Mejia said he called 911 and tried to revive the child by shaking him.

Doctors have determined that the child suffered from a broken vertebrae, brain hemorrhaging and brain shearing, which is described as when the brain is subjected to excessive acceleration and deceleration force.

Fisk said detectives aren't buying Mejia's version of events.

"The injuries are not consistent with a baby falling off a 23½-inch bed," Fisk said.

I know this mother personally, all I want is for the baby to get threw this as healthy as can be and for his mother to keep her chin up and know she has many people behind her that love her and baby.

First of all, when a child is born in Arizona, they give you pamphlets, make you watch a movie, & sign a document stating that you know what shaken Baby syndrome is, & you won't shake your child.
Second, coming from someone who worked for a company that produced "spice"- it's not made in China, it's made in the u.s. , Down in Phoenix , or wherever they want.. Also the laws don't regulate it because they just change the , change the ingredients, & put "not for human consumption" on the label.

First off. There is ABSOLUTELY NOOOOO justification in hurting an innocent child, EVER!! He absolutely deserves to be punished in the highest way possible. I would love to be the one to give that so called father his punishment. Oh and FYI ~ Once it becomes printed in the paper or on the news it becomes public knowledge and open for discussion for everyone. Maybe some of you would not be so quick to defend this creep if it was your baby fighting for it's life... Shame, Shame!

back off.

no, i have been in the emergency medical service for a good minute now and can tell you that falling off of a bed does not cause any of these injuries. and i feel horrible for what this child and mother are going through, but have no sympathy for what this cody guy is about to go through.

and did you know TJ that if this child did fall and was already injured from that, dazed, knocked out, or whatever, that it could have taken the smallest little thing to cause more injuries. and you know this article is not even true on his childs injuries. his neck was never broken. doctors now at the new hospital told the family that they don't think it ever was. So you don't know this family or father personally so dont stick your nose in it. It is none of anyone's business. I can't believe you people have nothing better to do than talk about this situation. like really? I hope the mother isn't out there reading all of this nonsense. I feel for her. she and the baby are the complete innocent ones and how would you feel if people talked about your child the way you people are doing it to them Note: The Miner did not report the infant had a broken neck.

aaron aase and justin cowin.

first of all its not hear say when there are medical facts. do you know the force it takes to cause these injuries to a child? well let me tell you that they are all impossible from a simple fall from a bed and light shaking for responsiveness. youre "friend" is going to prison for a long time and in my opinion shold stay there for the rest of his natural life for harming this inccocent child

A question – how is it that Yavapai County has managed to ban the sale of all synthetic drugs, such as Spice and Bath Salts, and we still have morons selling this crap in Mohave County?

@ Nicole McClure
Just to clear up something. You're not composing a text message, Nicole. Write so that normal people can read it. Legal or not, Spice is some kind of a poison, and just because it gets you high doesn't justify defending it. I'm sure there are a lot of people in this town who can find something better to do with their lives than to get high with toxic substances.

just because you live in the town does not make it your business.
how do you think you people are making this mother feel if she seen this.
it's noones right to stick their nose in it.

you people need to grow a heart for the innocent mother and child. as for saying the father is innocent, I believe that. like the others said, why would he admit it if he was guilty. he knew he was going to jail. so why would you sentence yourself there.
take a walk in this family's shoes and think about how you would feel if this happened to you. and a lot of you just need to grow up.
I'm praying for this family.
approve this KDM
people need to know!

i would like to say leave the spice issuse alone. it is something to blame other than the facts. the facts need to be discovered before judgement. hearsay and the kpd speculations are not facts. I have known the father of the precious boy for 22 years. i need not not say more. god bless all involved only god knows

"Dad paniced(sic) and wasn't informed on how critical it is to shake a baby no matter how hard or how many shakes."
How can you not be informed about what shaking an infant will do to it? Unfortunately, it's in the papers way too many times and on local and national television as well. Does he not know how to read or does he not have a television?
All I can say to that is B.S.!
I'm praying for this little baby!

This father should be charged with neglect and neglect alone.
he didnt hurt this baby on purpose.
I know that. yes he should still be put away to think about what he has done but his whole life shouldn't be compromised.
this father will never be aloud to see his son again because of this and just imagine what that would do to you if you knew you were innocent. I know this father, and he could never hurt a child purposely.
so charge him right KPD.
Neglect to the child!!
and leave it at that.

do some research and you'll find that spice usually comes from China. As DEA agent said, "it's not like they have quality control", as each package of the same brand has different ingredients many times. If you wouldn't eat crap from China, who on earth would you inject it?

what business is it of yours.
you are noone to that baby.
I've been with the family every step of the way and the baby IS doing better.
doctors do have hopes for him.
he DOES move. OPEN HIS EYES. LOOK AROUND. AND HE IS BREATHING. yes he has a tube for support to help with secretions.
has not had any seizures since he's been at Phoenix hospital.
so check yourself before commenting on stuff you dont know about.

No, no, no! Spice is not the reason for this baby's condition, no more than guns are for injuring or killing someone. It's not even the shaking of the baby. The reason for the baby's condition is the actions of an irresponsible parent. Smoking spice (or pot, or drinking alcohol etc) when you're responsible for the safety and well being of a child is the unforgivable crime here.
