The Questions: Miner photographer and gun owner JC Amberlyn when to Gun Appreciation Day at On Target Enterprises. She asked the following questions:

1. What brought you to gun appreciation day? Are you going to buy a gun? If so, what kind?
2. Do you believe Obama wants to take away your Second Amendment rights?
3. Are there any portions of his recent proposals and executive actions that do make sense to you?

Susan Breen's Answers
1. I came (with children) to show support. I don't know if I'm going to buy one.
2. Yes.
3. Absolutely not. He has no right to override our constitutional rights. The Second Amendment is in place to protect us from a tyrannical government.

Bob Pressler's Answers
1. I have one (semi-automatic gun) on order but I don't know if I'll get it or not. I had ordered it three days prior to the Newtown shootings but I don't know if I'll get it now. They were backlogged then and they're even more backlogged now. I'm here selling tickets to the Mohave County Friends of the NRA Annual Dinner on March 16 at the Powerhouse. (Raffle tickets for a Smith & Wesson handgun are also available at On Target.)
2. Definitely. He won't admit it, but that's his agenda.
3. Somehow they should tie in mental health records of some places. If a guy has mental health problems there's a risk there. I don't know how it would ever happen, (maybe) background checks at gun shows. Though, that leads into a lot of other problems. Neighbor selling to neighbor - you can't prevent that, you can't track that, and I don't believe that should be illegal. It's my personal property. The issue ought to be the economy and jobs but because of a nutcase with a gun here we are again with turmoil over guns.

Danny Mergell's Answers
1. No, I'm here helping Pierre (the owner of On Target) ... and to show support.
2. Yes, I do. The man is a socialist and a liar. He came to the TV the other day saying "I want to protect the children" but there are no seat belts on buses, for instance. He doesn't want armed guards in schools but his kids have security guards.
3. I can see them looking at the whackadoos - but I don't see him doing enough. It's all superficial - it affects the law abiding (citizens) more than the criminals.

What is interesting is that all of the people who are so hell bent on carrying weapons are being restricted by the very people who claim to support their rights.

At the Crossroads Gun Show in Phoenix this weekend participants were told they could not carry loaded firearms or magazines into the venue and those carrying were subjected to having their weapons (loaded or not) taken from them and a twist tie attached to immobilize the weapon. Crossroads posted, “No loaded firearms and no loaded magazines are permitted at any Crossroads gun show. Your personal safety is our number one priority.”

Safety? You mean the armed to the teeth attendees cannot properly handle a weapon?

The organizers of the BIG rally set for next month in Phoenix – the Sonoran Alliance - have put out the following, “This is a second amendment rally, it is appropriate to bring long-guns, unchambered and unloaded (bring magazines but keep in pocket) sidearms, of course, but in order to reach the widest audience possible we should come in civies, no uniforms or TAC-gear! This is not a militia rally!”

So once again the gun advocates are hinting that people within their group cannot be trusted with loaded weapons. And a dress code? Really, a dress code?

Sounds like infringements on some Constitutional rights to me and yet the gun lovers will march in lock step to the demands of … who? Who are these people? Oh, yeah, I forgot, these are people who want your money.

Obama is not trying to take everyone's guns.

District of Columbia vs Heller (June, 2008)

In Heller, right-wing Justice Scalia, said the "Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia … "

Scalia also said, "Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. The Court's opinion should not cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings."

He also noted that, "Holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those 'in common use at the time' finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons."

Also noting that "In addition, at least six States impose general bans on certain types of weapons, in particular assault weapons or semiautomatic weapons." adding that "These bans, suggest that there may be no substitute to an outright prohibition in cases where a governmental body has deemed a particular type of weapon especially dangerous."

So while right-wing Scalia and right-wing majority of the Supreme Court disregarded the militia aspect of the Second Amendment, they upheld the right of citizens to own handguns and specifically said it DID NOT apply to weapons such as assault and semi-automatic weapons or any other weapon the government deemed "dangerous or unusual".

I think this 2008 Supreme Court ruling settles the issue of assault weapons and large capacity clips.

Article comment by: HER'S MINE AND OURS Mr. C,

J.C. AS you learned in your interviews, apparently everyone has hes/her reasons for owning and possessing a weapon.

An act, which has had my full support, "for as long as I can remember" owning and having a weapon in the home, was as common as the T.V. in the front room. What has become all to common, is the indiscriminate taking of innocent life's. Which leads me to another question, Why?

That one question, if ever discussed seriously? Eventual will in "my opinion" greatly diminish the need for more gun control in this country.

In principle, focusing on keeping the guns out of the hands of mentally ill people rather than restricting gun ownership for all people makes perfect sense.
Using a favored catch phrase of liberals, "I think we can all agree that" we need to keep guns out of the reach of the mentally ill.

Be careful what you agree to.....

That is the back door that will allow the current administration to accomplish subverting the Second Amendment- which they know they will not be able to accomplish any other way.

Now that "Obama" Care owns the health care system and the psychiatrists - "Obama" is the one to decide who is mentally ill.

I have a concealed carry permit, a gun safe with guns, food stored in my garage, and am a conservative. According to our former governor, Janet Napolitano, that makes me a potential domestic terrorist. Does that make me mentally ill too? I guess that is up to "Obama" Care.

Gun rights advocates, be careful. I'm afraid that we are being led right to the demise of legal gun ownership.

Thank you JC for your totally unbiased poll of the local Kingman residents. I know some might think that polling people at a gun appreciation day about their appreciation of having guns could lead to a lopsided result, but that didn't stop you or the miner from pushing your agenda. I just think that calling the president " Obama" instead of President Obama might make some feel that you and the miner are just a tad biased. I don't know if the polls are accurate after all many said that Rmoney was going to beat him in the last election. But the last one I heard said that the majority wanted the president to take action on gun control. What do you suppose they ment in that poll? Do you think that they wanted us to do nothing about the fact that this is the only country in the world that has this problem. I think not.

The level of misinformation in society is staggering. Now Obama is to blame for seatbelt a not being on buses? How about you read this to get a better understanding of why seatbelts aren't on buses. And while you're at it, contemplate how a driver is going to free 40 kids from their belts while the bus is going up in flames.
