UPDATE:Sheriff Tom Sheahan today clarified his stance on enforcing any new gun laws that might be enacted in the wake of the Dec. 14 Newtown, Conn., mass shooing.

In Wednesday's edition, Mojave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter, on behalf of Sheahan, said the sheriff would enforce all laws.

That isn't necessarily the case.

"If I feel a law is unconstitutional, I probably wouldn't enforce it," said Sheahan.

Specifically, the sheriff said he would not enforce any proposed law calling for the confiscation of weapons such as the AR-15 that are already legally owned by Mohave County residents.

"I would never disarm a law-abiding citizen," he said.

To date, the issue of confiscating weapons has not been discussed in Washington, D.C.

Read more on Sheahan's stance in Thursday's edition of the Kingman Daily Miner.

Proponents of gun rights are invited to participate in a "spontaneous peaceful assembly" at noon Friday in front of the Mohave County Sheriff's office.

Local activist Luca Zanna took pains to suggest the event is not sponsored by any group in an interview on Monday.

"This is completely unorganized," he said. "I'm just one voice of many. Me, as an American citizen, I want to stand up for human rights, our inalienable rights and, if you believe in God, our God-given rights not to give up our guns in the face of hysteria in Washington, D.C."

Zanna said his goal for the gathering is two-fold. "Law-abiding citizens want to remind politicians in D.C. and all their bureaucrats we will not comply with unconstitutional laws," he said.

"Number two, we want to let our sheriff know we support him for saying he will not enforce an assault weapons ban in Mohave County. It's my duty to support the sheriff if the sheriff defends our Bill of Rights."

Last week, Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan told the Kingman Daily Miner that he didn't support a ban on assault weapons or restrictions on ammunition.

For Zanna, any restrictions on gun ownership would be wrong, even if the goal were to keep high-powered rifles out of the hands of the mentally ill.

He said he believes requiring Americans to register their guns with law enforcement would be the first step in turning the country into a fascist nation.

"First comes registration and then comes confiscation," he predicted. "This is my line in the sand."

Zanna said he has no idea what kind of turnout he'll have on Friday, but he encourages anyone and everyone who shares his views to join him.

"Everybody is welcome," he said. "I encourage them to open carry to this peaceful assembly."

"If I feel a law is unconstitutional, I probably wouldn't enforce it,"

Hmm, so law enforcement in Mohave County is now based on how "I feel." Interesting concept to say the least.

I can vouch for Sheriff Sheahan's support of the 2nd Amendment. He's been incredibly helpful in drafting a policy to allow law abiding citizen's to carry a weapon for self-defense in the county administration building. We'll be voting on it at the next board of supervisor's meeting.

"......For Zanna, any restrictions on gun ownership would be wrong, even if the goal were to keep high-powered rifles out of the hands of the mentally ill."

Indeed. To preserve this fellow's interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, we should allow the mentally ill to be armed. Now that statement's crazy in itself, and deliberately obtuse.

I'm just as amused as the next person reading these ongoing snippets about our vocal, fringe gun movement. But I'm also aware of the cost to taxpayers. This "spontaneous peaceful assembly" will mean more personnel on board Friday at the Sheriff's office - staff that isn't out patrolling your neighborhood.

We've already spent a bundle defending his frivolous, pamphleteering lawsuit. Yes, maybe some can yuck it up about his lawsuits, but we (the taxpayers) ultimately pay in the form of less funds available to spend on productive things like county road repair. Lawsuits like that don't "stick it to the man" - they stick it to the rest of us in the form of reduced services.

I would encourage all common sense gun owners to not attend.

By the way, if Sheriff Sheahan plans on enforcing un-Constitutional laws "regardless of his personal feelings about its merits", then perhaps we need to vote him out next time around.

Sheahan is talking about enforcing something that goes against the highest law in the land, The United States Constitution. That is tyranny. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in saying that perhaps he doesn't understand that he is under NO obligation to enforce any law that is not first and foremost Constitutional. By upholding the Constitution, he would be joining the Sheriff Heiss of Johnson County (Kansas City, MO.), Sheriff Roger Garrison of Cherokee County (Atlanta, GA.), Collin County (TX) Sheriff Terry Box, and about 60 other Sheriffs so far, who have been TRUE patriots and stand up for their citizens' rights under our Constitution. It would be truly sad if an AZ Sheriff was submissive to massa-government, whereas these other Sheriff's have stood their ground.

So will Sheahan be strong, courageous & brave in the face of tyranny, or will he cave to the fraudulent dictates of a small man with no regard for our nations highest laws? I guess we'll see.

This article says the sheriff will not stand by his oath. He will enforce any state and federal unconstitutional law as he has already done many times.
Gun supporters need to show up to show we will not bow down to unconstitutional laws. Lets do this peacefully, many people showing up will speak loader than any shouting. Now is the time to stand up or lose all your rights.

people should show up out of principle, even if they do not own guns or if their beliefs differ in some details with Mr. Zanna. Say what you will, but it's always best to let those in power know whom they are supposed to be representing - rather than "people over whom they rule".

I'm the spokesperson for the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. I was in error when I spoke to the reporter regarding this article. I would like to clarify. Sheriff Tom Sheahan believes in the Second Amendment as it was written and its intent. The Sheriff does not and will never support any legislation that attempts to restrict magazine capacity and does not support any type of "assault weapon" ban. Additionally, Sheriff Sheahan will not support any unlawful confiscation of firearms from law abiding citizens which violates the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Sheriff Sheahan is a firm believer in the stance taken by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Assembling and voicing opinions in a reasonable manner are some of the rights we enjoy as citizens of this great country. But you don't agree with a law, then there are proper channels to follow to change the law. We don't get to pick and choose which laws we follow.
