Guest Column: The plot against guns is there to see
Sandee Samoska
Kingman Resident

The "joke" on your Opinion page on Thursday, Jan. 17, has finally got me mad enough to write.

The Kingman Daily Miner, as well as every other mainstream newspaper and television news outlet, is so full of socialist-inclined writers and editors it is no wonder this country is full of people who would vote for lies and distortions rather than the truth. You and your fellow "journalists" have fed this nation's people a long line of lies to the point they believe them.

You would be happy to throw out the Second Amendment - but don't touch the First! Has it ever occurred to you that the government you help to destroy our Second Amendment rights will then have set the precedent for getting rid of your First Amendment rights?

No, of course not. The government wouldn't do that!

Really?

Why do you think this nation has never been invaded by a foreign army? They know that the majority of people in this country are not only armed, but know how to use those weapons.

Why is President Obama building up a government police force (known as the Homeland Security Force) and buying literally tons of ammunition for them? This is not a dreamed-up idea. It is fact. Check it out.

Now what do we need a Homeland Security force for? Well, they would be perfect for knocking on your door and taking your guns away. Think I am wrong? If the government (Obama) gets its way, they will take away "assault rifles."

Next, you will have to be fingerprinted to buy ammo (already started in California). After that, it will be very easy to stop all reloading supplies. After that, your guns would be worthless anyway.

What is the easiest way to take over a country? Disarm its citizens.

The Kingman Daily Miner may wish to remember what city, county and state you are writing in before you try to push this agenda onto the local people (the majority of which are gun owners and NRA members).

Sandee:

"You would be happy to throw out the Second Amendment - but don't touch the First!"

First of all no one, including the very right wing and pro-gun Kingman Daily Miner, is talking about throwing out the Second Amendment. Second of all, no constitutional right is absolute. There are already significant restrictions on the First Amendment rights of free speech, free expression, and religion for example. There are laws regarding libel and slander. You cannot falsely yell “Fire” in a crowded theatre. Child pornography is outlawed. Adult entertainment is heavily regulated. There are zoning laws that restrict where places of worship can be located.

No constitutional right is absolute and with our rights come responsibilities. That is what we as a country are grappling with right now. How do we balance our Second Amendment rights with our responsibilities to make sure our fellow citizen’s lives are protected? I’m sorry that second amendment extremists like you can’t see that. You are so blinded by your hatred for this president that you throw all rational thought out the door on this subject.

Fortunately the vast majority of Americans including most NRA members are at least on board with requiring background checks for all gun purchases. I think that’s the least we can do to reduce gun violence in this country.

Tisk, tisk, I guess Sandee is all up in arms!

Do wish people would research the facts before they open their mouths. Please cite the facts that "the majority of (locals) which are gun owners and NRA members."

Also check the use of the word which.

Sandee, Sandee, Sandee, talk about throwing out one amendment for another that's just want NRA's head LaPierre advocated when he make his long awaited "press conference". He wanted to ban those wildly violent video games and all that blood and guts that is shown in the movies and on tv. Guess he was advocating for only the blood and guts his guns provide,

Couldn't agree more, Sandee.

The problem is, most people's perspective of history begins on the day they were born. A lot of people just don't care to look at the facts, they just keep watching The Kardashian's or Dancing With The Stars, while the world around them is on fire (again).

Tyranny always begins its reign by disarming citizens(Stalin, Hitler, etc). They take away our ability to fight back (leaving us with little more than pea shooters and slingshots to defend ourselves). Our government teaches the whole people by its example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law it invites every man to become a law unto himself it invites anarchy. What we will have left is chaos and genocide.

Article comment by: Congratulations Are In Order

Well, the Miner has finally made it. I guess common sense at the paper evolved over time. Or was it the endless turn over finally brought the right mix to town. Or was it that the paper finally reflects the community. Maybe it was just something in that water. In any case congratulations to the Miner at being named a socialist leaning paper.

Yes, that cartoon was a disgusting lie, but blame the cartoonist, not The Miner. Most people that work at newspapers are not of the "Baby Boom" generation, and thus mostly ignorant of history. When I was in the 8th grade, we had to make a report on the Constitution and the branches of government, and how it all worked. It had to be done by the end of the first semester, and was about 80% of the grade you got for the first half of the school year. That is no longer the case today, as schools/colleges today are mostly concerned with the bad things about history. Thomas Jefferson was a flawed person, and owning slaves is mostly what is taught about him today, but he wrote- "Every citizen should be a soldier. For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security." We the people are the militia, and we should not forget that.

@ Samoska

While I do not disagree with the majority of what you say I must correct you on your statement,

"Why do you think this nation has never been invaded by a foreign army?"

This is incorrect. In fact we have been invaded by foreign armies on several occasions, mainly by the British and the Mexican armies. Now if you restated it to say that our country hasn't been invaded in the last hundred or so years you would be correct in your statement.

Thanks to the writer for stating what most of already think, but there are those who try to talk louder ,so they can be heard, thinking louder makes them more creditable, (wrong) then there are those who consistently dominate these forums with their BS, thinking if I say it enough, it will be true,(again wrong)
I'm glad to see there are those among us who have common sense and are not afraid to state the truth.

@Sandee

The news staff who write editorials for the opinion page are posting opinions. No need to get angry or accuse them of feeding us lies. The editorials, just like your letter above, are an exercise of their first amendment rights.

The paper is generous enough to set up an online forum for readers to post their own opinions which is something that they aren't required to do. They are also pretty fair about publishing opinion letters from readers on both sides of the issue.

I am very pro Second Amendment, but I also strongly support anyone exercising their First Amendment rights, regardless of their opinion, because it is proof that there are still freedoms in our country.
