Outdoor Column: Obama's skeet photo raises questions

Don Martin
The Great Outdoors

Who would have ever thought that a photo of the president of the United States purportedly shooting a shotgun would cause so much stir?

It is no secret that President Obama and the far-left Democrats are pushing for stronger gun control, including bans on certain firearms that they deem are "assault weapons" when in fact they are just semi-auto rifles.

But good grief, should a photo of President Obama shooting a shotgun cause a lot of controversy? No, it shouldn't, as other former presidents have been photographed with guns, and particularly shotguns.

But right now this photo seems to be all over the press.

At first, when I saw the photo, I didn't think much of it, probably like most of you. All I could think of was, "Wow - the president shoots skeet?"

But then I looked at the photo very closely, and a number of things just didn't look right.

And, judging from what I've seen written by others in the national press, they too have some serious questions about the validity of the photo.

I'm not going to turn this article into a gun rights debate. There are enough folks out there, along with the National Rifle Association, who seem to be doing a good enough job with that.

No, I'm just going to bring out some points about the photo that I think are interesting both to shotgun shooters and others.

Let me preface this with a little background about myself and the knowledge I have pertaining to shotguns and shooting skeet, which is supposedly what the president was doing when this controversial photo was taken.

When I was in the Army in Europe, I participated in skeet shooting, which is a shotgun sport where small clay targets, or "birds," are shot at. A round of skeet consists of 25 targets.

I shot skeet semi-professionally and shot skeet with all four guns (12 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge and .410) that are commonly used in the sport. I ran the Wertheim Rod and Gun Club's trap and skeet range in Germany, and personally shot thousands of rounds of shotgun shells.

I still shoot skeet at the local Seven Mile Hill Range, so yes, I am familiar with the sport.

Targets are machine-launched out of two stationary buildings. They are called a high house and a low house. Shooters move around in a half circle and at eight different stations shoot at two to four targets.

Shotguns shoot shotgun shells that are loaded with smokeless powder in this sport.

So when I saw the amount of smoke coming not only from the front of the barrel but also to the right side of the barrel, I had some questions.

Yes, some shotguns are "ported," which means they have holes cut or drilled into both sides of the barrel near the muzzle. This process lets gas produced by the shells escape. It is designed to reduce recoil and the amount of "jump" when a gun is fired.

I have NEVER seen a shotgun that wasn't ported on both sides, though in the photo you plainly see smoke coming out of the right side of the barrel, but not the left. I have never seen or heard of a shotgun ported only on one side.

Then what about all that smoke? The president is holding what seems to be a high-dollar over/under shotgun. I have never seen shotgun shells - even those produced in European countries - produce that much smoke.

Remember, they are loaded with smokeless powder.

Assuming that the president was shooting high-quality shotgun shells manufactured in the good ole USA, there would NEVER be that much smoke produced.

One could expect that much smoke to be produced from a muzzleloader shotgun, but the shotgun the president is purported to be holding is NOT a muzzleloader firearm.

So what is to be made out of all of this?

Well, without a lot more information to the contrary, one could reasonably deduce that maybe, just maybe, the smoke was added to the photo after it was taken.

If President Obama does shoot skeet - and I hope he does, as it is a lot of fun - he might want his staff to take a photo of him at an actual shooting range.

That way, there would a lot less controversy about whether or not this president actually participates in the shotgun shooting sports.

“It also means he is not Black. He's bi-racial. I have never understood why his worshippers cannot accept that simple fact.”

Why does this bother you so much? You constantly bring it up as if it is a matter of some contention or importance – which it is not. As a nation we have no such classification as “bi-racial,” so we rely – as a rule – on how an individual self-identifies. So rather than worry about the insignificant point of his being bi-racial it would serve you better to actually concentrate on something of substance. Oh, wait … never mind.

“However stating that Hawaii attested to it's validity is not evidence, please post a link to a document attesting to it.”

I have provided over the past two to three years literally hundreds of posts dealing with the birth certificate nonsense and when it was decided by the usual suspects to call every attestation of mine garbage because they disagreed with my sources, I invited everyone to do their own research, and report back my errors.

I will cover the BC issue with this update from 23 May 2012 – This is from the Associated Press. “The state of Hawaii has verified President Barack Obama's birth records to Arizona's elections chief after a nearly three-month back and forth that Arizona officials said could have ended without the incumbent's name on its November ballot. Hawaii, which has vouched for Obama's birth in the state several times dating back to October 2008, didn't bow to the request easily. The Aloha State told Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett he had to prove he needed the records as part of normal business.”

“…you now have what I will call an ‘Obamist.’”

There is no such thing.

“But I think…”

Sorry, that does not address the issue and is simply opinion.

“Not having read the ACA myself…”

End of discussion on the ACA.

“Using your figures the president did raise tobacco taxes 62.903225%."

And this equates to 2000% - how?

“Please include a link to you BLS statistic…”

Really? Try the BLS website it’s just that simple.

Why is 1 unidentified person taking up the blog here?
I do not understand the FEAR here in Kingman not to put your name on an opinion .
Why all the secrecy in Kingman????

I do not trust any article that has a fake name as it could be 1 person repeating the comments to dominate the conversation.

If you want a better society secrecy is not the answer !

The funniest thing about the birther's movement is they can whine, cry till the cows come home about his father being Kenyan, but his mother is a white lady born in America which means he is American no matter how much they twist their funny stories! Citizenship needs only one parent be US citizen and I guess they will try to say this is not so as well but then nothing they say makes any sense and will go down in history as mere racism by folks who just could not get over the idea a man who was not all white got to a office they will never be allowed to set up a shoe shine stand in!

Yes, America was not founded as a Christian nation. But many of the Judeo-Christian principles that shaped our founders also found their way into the shaping of our Constitution, our culture and the laws that we pass. To deny otherwise is simply lying to yourself to make the actuality of the facts fit into your own worldview.

As far as Senator Menendez being a Pedophile, I know there is an investigation into him but I have no personal knowledge of his proclivities. If the FBI believes that he has broken the law then I think they will arrest him and then he will face a jury of his peers who will determine whether or not he is a pedophile or just broke reporting laws. Until that happens anything somebody says about him is purely their own opinion.

So, what's next?

Using your figures the president did raise tobacco taxes 62.903225%, which is in line with his stated objectives of raising taxes. This doesn't bother me as I haven't smoked in almost 10 years now but I will say that I think it punishes a segment of our society who choose to do something that is perfectly legal and that is morally wrong.

Please include a link to you BLS statistic, and does that number include the amount of people who have not been able to find work and been dropped from the unemployment rolls? Additionally, a large number of people who are classified as employed are only employed part time and I don't really think that is what most of us are talking about when we refer to being employed.

You are absolutely right that the 2nd Amendment says nothing about a "Tyrannical Government", but if you read, without preconceptions, the Declaration of Independence, The Federalist Papers and numerous other writing of our founding fathers it would be extremely difficult for anyone to come away with the idea that the founders didn't intend for the people to be able to overthrow our own government and install a new government with the consent of the people. In order to ensure that the people would be properly able to do this they included the 2nd Amendment so the people would have the weapons to overthrow our government and install a new one if need be. By my logic, and in my opinion, that means that "Military-style" weapons are exactly the kinds that people should be purchasing of their own accord.

So when you take all these parts of these different philosophies and put them together in the person of Barack Obama you now have what I will call an "Obamist". The question is what is the end goal of the Obamist political philosophy? Will it be good or bad? Will it be forced or will it be accepted by the majority of the population? And if it is not acceptable by the majority what will happen then?

Next topic, the SS#. I don't care about that myself, I figure if it's wrong then the jack-booted thugs at the IRS will come knocking on his door eventually.

You're right, Medicare doesn't prevent you from buying any medicine your doctor prescribes. But ObamaCare was sold to us as a way of reforming health care and dropping it's cost to make it more affordable for people to get insurance. It probably will make it more affordable for some people. But I think for a majority of people, myself included, have already seen our health care costs rise and are starting to feel that we've been sold a bill of goods.

Not having read the ACA myself I can't tell you whether there are death panels in it or not, but I do recall mention of panels that would determine whether or not to approve treatments for patients. Please post your proof for your assertion that death panels exist in the insurance industry, I would love to see that.

I think he believes in the economic principles of Fascism- "Fascism advocates a state-controlled and regulated mixed economy the principal economic goal of fascism is to achieve autarky to secure national self-sufficiency and independence, through protectionist and interventionist economic policies. It promotes regulated private enterprise and private property contingent whenever beneficial to the nation and state enterprise and state property whenever necessary to protect its interests."

I also think he is a bit Maoist, with the "Agrarian Peasantry" being illegal aliens- "Maoism sees the agrarian peasantry, rather than the working class, as the key revolutionary force which can fundamentally transform capitalist society towards socialism. Maoism views the industrial-rural divide as a major division exploited by capitalism, identifying capitalism as involving industrial urban developed "First World" societies ruling over rural developing "Third World" societies."

Honestly, I don't think that there is any full fledged communist in him since that political philosophy advocates this- "is a revolutionary socialist movement to create a classless, moneyless and stateless social order structured upon common ownership of the means of production, as well as a social, political and economic ideology that aims at the establishment of this social order." Obama uses too much class warfare and wants to much regulation of the economy for me to believe there's any communist in him.

I'd say there is also a smattering of Marxist in him considering all of the class warfare that is engaged in on a regular basis- "According to Marxist analysis, class conflict within capitalism arises due to intensifying contradictions between highly-productive mechanized and socialized production performed by the proletariat, and private ownership and private appropriation of the surplus product in the form of surplus value (profit) by a small minority of private owners called the bourgeoisie."

@AN

Birth Certificate- On this one I have an interesting take because I was also born in Hawaii and my BC looks nothing like his, but that doesn't mean much since document formats can change over time. However stating that Hawaii attested to it's validity is not evidence, please post a link to a document attesting to it.

Obama being smuggled into the U.S. and his father being Frank Marshall, personally I think that's kind of laughable myself since I couldn't care less who his father is and there's no need to be smuggled across the border when you can just walk across it like any other illegal alien. Plus if he was born in Hawaii no smuggling would have been needed anyways.

Obama as an "ist"- being called an "ist" refers to ones political, social and ideological views, it doesn't mean you can't still be an American and a Christian. Just to be sure I went back and read over the definitions of some of those "ist's". Here are the links-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maoism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism

After considering the differences among these "ism's" I would have to agree that Obama doesn't fit into any one of these particular parties of ideological thought. Instead I think I will coin a new term and call his political thought "Obamist" which takes a part of all these "ism's" and put them together into a new brand of political philosophy.

I would say that he is a "Democratic Socialist"- "Democratic socialism seeks to establish socialism through democratic processes and propagate its ideals within the context of a democratic political system."

After reading this, it is glaringly obvious that you do not read my posts. I am not a conspiracy theorist wearing a tin foil hat. In fact, I read them mostly for laughs. I do not complain about lack of representation in government either, I do, however, complain about their lack of effectiveness.

In short, you are grouping with the local posters here who are ultra conservative Obama haters. I am certainly not those, and you would know if you read my posts.

I did read your post... and then the one where you backslide into a birther argument. 9_9

You, and many like you, spend time A) complaining about a lack of representation in government and B) that all of these conspiracies have you pinned down. You are powerless to affect government! Oh no!

You prefer mental excuses as to why the "morally superior" conservative is (aww, shucks!) not getting elected. It's easier to blame omnipotent Obama for all your woes than deal with reality.

What is the reality here? That changing policy is VERY hard to do and that individuals in a republic are not, by design, supposed to be able to do that without collectivizing to some extent.

However you and many others simply do not understand how modern government works - and rather than figure it out, because it's hard, you simply throw up your hands and say "Oh! Obama did something sinister and it prevented me from doing anything!"

You thought you were so safe and secure in 2007, then we were suddenly on the verge of apocalypse within months.... any you don't question why you've survived 5 years of warnings to expect apocalypse any day? But you'll question anything coming out of the White House.... Ask yourself why.

Conspiracy theories are manifestations of deeper insecurities you and many people have. Some people go to therapy some think aliens probed their behinds. That's up to you how you want to deal with it, but you shouldn't complain that the world is against you when you marginalize yourself by buying in to this garbage.

I've done my own fact checking and formed my own opinions, but that is beside the point and not a part of this conversation. AN stated a number of things that he says are egregious, hyperbolic and nonsensical that are posted about the President. I have my own opinion on those things but if AN would like me to agree with his position then it is up to HIM to present his case with factual evidence that supports his position. So far I have not seen him do this.

@DR

Perhaps you missed the point of my posts. I was not preaching any sides position be it left, right, gun-banner or not. I was simply stating that in order to have an honest discussion about issues the facts must be kept straight and accurate. When Liberal Lion misstated the number of dead kids in Newtown, CT I called him on it and when AN responded with his anemic reply about it being an obvious mistake I called him on how the left has it's own bouts of revisionist history as well. So I fail to see how any of that would induce your diatribe about doing more harm than good and destroying your gun rights.

“OK, now show me the subjective evidence that all you have said is false and I will condemn it.”

I will admit this is a difficult challenge because the original posters are unable to provide empirical evidence of their nonsense, but I will attempt to cover what I posted and then it will be your turn.

Presidents Birth Certificate – a copy has been made available and the State of Hawaii attested to its validity. That negates the president being born in Kenya.

Obama being smuggled into the U.S. – There is no evidence of his mother ever leaving the states to go to or return from Kenya in 1961.

President’s father being Frank Marshall or a white guy – no evidence can be found to back these up.

The president is not one of the many “..ists” attributed to him. He is an American and a Christian as evidenced by his BC and church affiliation.

The Social Security number – debunked multiple times.

Medicare is not preventing anyone from buying any drug their doctor prescribes.

Death Panels do not exist anywhere in the ACA, they do exist within the insurance industry, however.

The president did not raise tobacco taxes by 2000%. The increase amounted to thirty-nine cents. A 2000% increase would amount to $12.40.

The BLS indicates 12.4 million are unemployed, not one third of the population.

The Second Amendment does not say anything about a “tyrannical government.”

The U.S. was not founded as a “Christian” nation.

And outside of a ridiculous chain e-mail lie there is nothing indicating Senator Menendez is a pedophile.

Want more, just ask.

Sorry, no such investigation is going on, nor has it been reported “all over the news.”

No trick. I have challenged you numerous times to prove your assertions and you never respond. Saying otherwise is … well, you know.

“Dozens and dozens and dozens of experts have shown the one o presented was a fraud.”

“No, the Right Wing Loon Idiot Fringe has looked at downloaded PDF’s and then made the claim the BC is a fraud. And of course we know that to authenticate anything you should always use a downloaded PDF – just like the art and book experts do. Oh, wait, they don’t do that do they?

“YET NOT ONE SINGLE TIME HAS BOB MOORE ADMITTED HE EVEN LOOKED AT THESE FACTS… “

Also incorrect. I have looked at and these moronic “facts” numerous times and admitted to doing so. Pure hokum.

“Anyone who has VAGUELY studied it and it's original intent, understands it was meant to stop a tyrannical government…”

And yet you cannot provide proof of that anywhere. And if you were to actually study the Second Amendment you would realize it is to protect the State, not the individual.

“Because BM cannot do research himself, his little game of asking others grows tiresome. Most of us don't care WHAT he believes.”

My research, overall, is impeccable and your refusal to deal with issues I have brought is indicative of your inability to dispute said research. As to whether anyone believes me or not I leave up to the individual and their own research

Joe, All opposing viewpoints against Obama policies have been labeled as racist. If you didn’t vote for Obama you were racist.

I can’t believe that you think that no other has been persecuted or disrespected like Obama! Where have you been?

Bush was disrespected and still is to extents historically unprecedented. His children were attacked. Sarah Palin still is attacked.

Just a little reminder. Anytime in the last 12 years you laughed at a political parody or joke from Letterman, Saturday Night Live, Bill Moyer, John Stewart, Jimmy Fallon and a dozen more shows, think back. It was a Conservative President, Conservative woman or Conservative black person that was the butt of the joke.

Now about the birth certificate. I won’t mention about the term used on it being “African American” instead of “negro” as every other birth certificate of a black born in America did in 1961.

I won’t bring up the fact that the birth certificate lists the place of birth as "Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital." When in fact the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called KauiKeolani Children's Hospital" and "Kapi'olani Maternity Home," respectively. The name did not change to Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged. (I can prove all this)

No, I just say that if it was a white guy that lived in Russia where his father was born and he refused to release his birth certificate for several years and his past grades and class mates were a mystery, people would still ask the hard questions the media refuses to. If he was a Conservative the left would be marching in the streets for answers.

And you don’t want the paper printing anything you disagree with.

Tell your neighbor you won’t be stealing his paper anymore.

“Because most of what people post here is of their own opinion …”

Actually the most egregious posts are not posted as opinions but as facts – that when challenged the posters can never prove.

“Now if you have anything specific in mind please say what it is they are saying that is so ludicrous ….”

Here you go - The presidents birth certificate is a fraud. The president was born in Kenya. The president was born in Hawaii, then taken to Kenya and then – with the aid of rogue INS agents – snuck back into the U.S. The presidents father is Frank Marshall. The president is a homosexual. The president is a Communist, Fascist, Socialist, Maoist, Taoist, Trotskyite, Muslim, et al. The president holds a foreign passport. The president uses the social security number of a dead guy. Medicare is intervening in medical care by refusing to cover certain prescription drugs. Death Panels exist in the ACA. The president raised tobacco taxes by 2000%. More than 100 million people are on unemployment in the U.S. The Second Amendment to the Constitution specifies it’s purpose as being to defeat a tyrannical government. The United States was founded as a Christian Nation. Senator Bob Menendez is a pedophile.

That is just the tip of the iceberg for hyperbolic, nonsensical posts that appear here. If you would like to see more, just ask.
