Reader Letter: Guns do kill people

I recently posted my support for common sense gun legislation on Facebook. A friend immediately responded with the NRA mantra, "Guns don't ....'

I reminded him of the crazy man who attacked primary school children in China and wounded 22 students and one adult Dec. 14, 2012. There were no fatalities.

If this deranged attacker had used a gun instead of a knife, there probably would have been 23 dead people in the Henan province village of Chengping, China, and still he would say "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

My concern is, people with semi-automatic guns with extra-capacity magazines kill more people than people without guns.

@Gun Legislation is Coming, Why Not Work For Reasonable Laws

Yet another gun grabber with amusing stories, but with no listing of what his "reasonable laws" would be.

Hope you are holding your breath waiting for an assault weapons ban to pass the House and Senate.

"As for cars killing people, this is also true. The difference, however, is that a driver behind the wheel of a car is not deliberately trying to kill someone. This is why it is called an "accident."

Except for all of the times someone has used a car to intentionally hit and possibly kill someone.

Oh look Lori, here's a link to a story about someone intentionally using a car as a weapon. 4 dead, 1 injured. Known as the "Isla Vista Massacre.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isla_Vista_massacre

And one very recent one.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/17/us/mississippi-hit-and-run

Should I post more of these for you to read, Lori? Your arguments seem to be getting lamer and lamer with the passing of time.

At least it seems you have now abandoned your "I own guns" line, usually included in all your gun-grabber postings.

LOL

Keep parroting those chain emails and memes!

@Spoons

"Look what gun control has done to stop the ex cop who is waxing LAPD and civilians right now in LA County...."

Are you referring to the ex military and ex cop? See the irony there?

Also, referring to the gun control laws in Ca, are you talking about the ones that Reagan signed? Oops, you didn't know that Reagan was secretly anti gun? LoLoL

He could be right. Just last night, I was awakened by sort of a rustling noise in my dresser drawer.

I opened the drawer and found my Sig pistol moving around and trying to get out. It was trying to shoot someone, I promptly unloaded it.

BTW, 30 round magazine for semi-automatic rifles are called standard capacity magazines. I would support legislation that banned high capacity magazines that hold over 100 rounds.

@George F.: Apparently the next person to crack is the Obama supporter, former police officer George Dorner that's killed 3 people in CA.
I happen to know someone who knows him and he told me, the guy's been a miserable failure at everything he's tried. Couldn't become a Marine officer because he was too fat, became a Navy officer and promptly washed out of flight school, becomes a cop and gets fired, no girlfriends because he was so abusive to women.
But a big Hillary and Feinstein supporter, along with her fanatical AWB. He's a good shot though and if he tried to attack me, I sure would want my semi-automatic rifle.

Uh, Marcus "Pete", do you really want to draw comparisons of life in China to that of the U.S.? It's always funny to see a liberal try and sound intellectual. Yeah, the guy in China only had a knife because guns aren't allowed to the average citizen there. The folks in China lack many rights we appreciate here in the U.S. Well, most of us appreciate these rights anyway, even though quisling libs like you perhaps do not. In order to have as many rights as we do in the U.S., we also accept some of the risks associated. Libs like you would gladly relinquish many of the rights you have in order to be "safe" and "taken care of". It's a fool's paradise and you're the tour guide.

"With all of these thinly disguised "2nd amendment rallies" going on, who might be the next person to crack?"

Well look at the news today, Skeezix. The "next person to crack". the ex-cop Dorner, is a fan of gun control, a big fan of obama, and even a big fan of Piers Morgan. It's all in his manifesto. In the pages the main stream media is editing out. What a big surprise.

Better luck next time.

After doing a quick search , from 1964-2010 , at least 79 people have been killed just in schools from assailants armed with knives , cleavers , swords ,machetes, clubs and even a home made flamethrower . Some of these attacks killed as many as 10-12 people .

This hardly supports your "common sense " argument .

Didn't they already make shooting someone illegal, unless in self defense?? Maybe somebody should tell the bad guys about that law. I bet that'll stop'm. You try and protect yourself with laws and regulations. I'll try protecting myself with a weapon.

Media will never mention all the hundreds of lives that were saved by guns and rapes too.

Several times, since the senseless shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school. One fact remains as controversial today as when those precious life's where taken by someone, clearly not in hes right mind.

"Gun control" Gun Control defies a Definitive solution or definition, it is dependent solely on individual ideas and they are as diverse as the issue itself.

When all else fails, we have only the law to guide and govern us, with out law we become a nation of anarchism.

Smaller mag for semi automatic weapons oppress no one. Background checks oppress no one, Waiting periods oppress no one.

Holding person accountable for hes/her actions under the law oppresses no one. Failure to enact and enforce the law can lead to oppression in and by itself.

Abortions have killed millions and i dont see any outrage about this by lefty's at all.
I read a report where more people were killed with knives than guns.Pretty soon we wont be able to cut meat without some kind of testing and registration.
Funny how anti gun folks cant figure out that
the AR15 is just a showy semi auto like a plain jane Rugar mini forteen. People need to read up on agenda 21.We are living in the making of it.
People cryed and threw hissy fits about Bush.Heck we have lost more rights under The Obama regime.More killing of civilians with Predator drones also.
There sure isn't much public outcry about Illegal and undeclared wars.
We have a horribly run and corrupt government and people so dumbed down they dont care.

@La Barba, et al....

Your response suggests to me that YOU are most likely one of those citizens who should NOT be allowed to have a gun. Why do you have so many 'man-killers' in your arsenal? Are you planning on taking on government authority if you don't like what they legislate?
Despite what the recent Supreme Court decided, all earlier courts defined the 2nd Amendment to be the right of states to have their own armed militias. It was the only way to get the former colonies to ratify the Constitution! One of my ancestors was a 'Minuteman' member of the colonial militia of Massachusetts and fought at Bunker (Breeds) Hill. Another left his militia and signed up under Washington and was killed in the Battle of White Plains.

Hand grenades don't kill people --- people kill people.

Ricin and anthrax don't kill people - people kill people.

Nuclear bombs don't kill people -- people kill people.

So why is there a ban on hand grenades, anthrax, ricin and nuclear weapons?

We all know why.

Mr. Hoover:

You are talking about a very small percentage of "bad" people, not the millions of good people who own all types of guns.

A Grandmother of a child the age of the slaughtered children recently, my heart breaks at their senseless deaths. I cannot even imagine my grandchild ending up in that horrible manner but there are as many or more who have been SAVED by guns.

Why do you not mention them? Do you want armed guards in schools? I sure do. But what I don't want is for those who don't obey laws anyway to be the only ones who can carry anything they want.

A crazy nut who just shot a school bus driver was himself killed with guns and a young boy saved.

Didn't this settle the gun ban issue ?

District of Columbia vs Heller (June, 2008)
http://laws.findlaw.com/us/000/07-290.html

In part..
Scalia also said, "Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. The Court's opinion should not cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings."

To I Must Be Confused:

Obviously, you are. It's absolutely true that people kill people. The problem is, guns make it much easier for people to kill people.

With a gun, a person can kill another person from a distance, there is no need to have a possible physical confrontation with the intended victim if the killer were to use a knife, a bat, or any other inanimate object. The battle to ward off such an attack would be on a more survivable level. With high capacity magazines, the shooter can kill a whole bunch more people in a short period of time, than a person armed only with a knife or bat, etc.

So yes, we can blame people for killing people. But let's be honest, when people use guns to kill people, it is a sure bet that that gun will kill more people at one time, than any other weapon possibly could, short of using a bomb.

As for cars killing people, this is also true. The difference, however, is that a driver behind the wheel of a car is not deliberately trying to kill someone. This is why it is called an "accident." Even a person who drives drunk and kills someone, although stupid and irresponsible, it was not a deliberate act of murder, it was the result of someone's egotistical belief that they were capable of driving drunk and not causing an accident, and too inebriated to think otherwise. The person behind a gun, IS deliberately trying to kill someone, that is why it's called "murder."

No offense...but people like you truly bring fear to my heart. Fear for the future of this country. Fear for how thing will be here for my children. Fear, because obviously the government's and the media's brainwashing is working, because people like you believe the lies they are telling you.

Mr. Hoover. Even if you don't care about firearms, can't you see they are trying to override our wonderful Constitution? Do you really think that if they are allowed that it will stop at the 2nd Ammendment? The problem is one of a violent nature. Not of guns. We need to get back to our morals and the principles that made this country so great in the first place.
