Letter: Armed guards good for schools

I attended school in the 1920s and '30s in a small New Jersey town with two grammar schools, one high school and one bank. Each one had an armed guard.

I clearly remember our school guard, an officer named Art Corsey, a big man (probably six-foot!) who carried a monster revolver in a gun belt (probably a .38 or.40 caliber). He was a very friendly man who loved all the kids and who all loved him. We would all gather with him after school. He would show us his weapon and occasionally remove the cartridges and let one of the boys hold it. (Wow!)

There was never any violence in Hasbrouck Heights, although the neighboring towns with no armed guards occasionally had some - nothing like the level of violence in today's society, I must add!

I am very strongly in favor of armed guards as a result of my school experience.

To all the people who think they know better !!!!
There is one rule that is above all others and that is at no time and for any reason will a gun be unholsterd except to protect all people from a gun or a deadly style knife ..Has anyone noticed that there has not been a problem at our court houses or admin building ? I guess the security dept.of the County really does its job ! Thanks dept. heads !!

Well anson to answer your question, obama can just print the money cant he??? He does it with everything else and you support it! So why cant he just break out the ol' xerox, and print the funds. In fact, why not just tax us some more?? If you dont donate to the armed school gaurd fund and you can afford to, then we will penalize you every year for not doing it!! Essentially the same as your healthcare right?? I mean were applying the same logic to everything right anson?? Or once again, is it just when it suits your propaganda at the time??

obama's nephew
Like I said some liberal would refute it if I said obama was black and some idiot did.
As for the rest of my rant your answer is typical as you can't come up with a good answer so blah blah blah as usual from you!

@ Capt Nice

You're missing a great political capitol opportunity here. Just say the armed guards are there to protect the teachers. Their union will find a way....

Just make sure that the guards are trained to protect the kids, too.

Now you've satisfied everyone. Was that so hard?

To Robert Ferm:

I've heard of guards at schools, but never ARMED guards. As far as I know, guns have NEVER been allowed in schools. As for your wonderful Mr. Corsey, why kind of fool would allow kids to handle his gun? So, this "guard" hung out with the kids, eh? How could the kids have a respectful fear of an armed guard if he was pals with the kids and (wow) allowed them to play with his gun, even if it was unloaded. Gee, that guard was lucky that a bunch of roughians didn't jump him, steal his gun and the cartridges, and go on a shooting spree. Obviously, that guard was shirking the real purpose of his presence there.

We do not need armed "Guards" however the School Resource program run by many departments arouind the country and active here in your public schools right now irs a fantastic program of assigning a sworn police officer to the school it is a great idea, saves alot of work for basic patrol and builds a good relationship between the police and the children. Marla if a student tried to take the gun then they are a criminal with a serious problem and we have now identified it, you make no sense. Staging a sit in can be a crime also Marla.

This is the worst possible letter advocating armed school guards. He would take his gun out unload it and let the kids handle it? How incredibly Foolish and irresponsible.

“I love that an obama supporting liberal such as yourself is asking the question, ‘where do the funds come from(?)’”

Why is that funny? The original poster wants to see armed guards at every school and I asked where would the funds come from? Exactly what about that do you find to be humorous? Seems to be a logical question to me that has no bearing on who the president of the United States might be.

"Obama did sponsor a free phone giveaway...look it up before you blame Reagan.
or Bush....which is all you can do!"

Read their posts again. They never said Obama didn't, they said Reagan started it, which he did. Too bad all you can do is blame Obama when he does the same things others have done.

No that would be the Rightie FLS who seems to find the fact that Obama is “half-white” some kind of a big deal. As to the rest of your rant – blah, blah, blah as usual.

AN,JJ and liberals
If I were to tell you obama is black you folks would find some way to refute it...
I think it is ironic that a liberal is worried about where the money would come from when they could care less about the trillions that obama has spent....and wants more.
Obama did sponsor a free phone giveaway...look it up before you blame Reagan.
or Bush....which is all you can do!
If you liberals are so concerned about our children's safety, why are you against protecting them now instead of the ten years from now when new gun laws go into effect and some one actually enforces them and they don't do a bit of good.
Liberals really value their fellow man and want to help them....with some one else's money!

Wrong!!!!! The free phones are not paid by the wireless carriers. They are paid through a surcharge-(read...tax) that every paying wireless customer pays as part of their bill each month.

Everything that is handed out for "free" by the government is paid for by those of us who work to support ourselves and pay taxes. Whether the taxes are federal income taxes, or surcharges, or sales tax- the hard working taxpayers fund all the largess the government uses to buy votes.

As the parent of a child in high school I do not want armed guards in the schools. I remember the security guard that used pepper spray on the kids that were staging a sit in. Kids can be annoying, especially high and Jr high. And what if one of them tried to take the gun?

Then there's the cost of paying for them. Guess we could do what Sheriff Joe did, get volunteers. Of course some of them were CONVICTED sex offenders. Guess having your kid molested is better than shot. Right?

Capt Nice - You mean the "free" phones that started as a program under Prez Reagan and has continued on as such since the mid eighties? The free phones that are paid for by the wireless carriers in the US? Those free phones?

“but they sure don't want obama to stop his spending on unions, teachers, free phones and the rest of the stuff he bought his election with.”

I know I’ve asked this before and for some reason you have avoided an answer, so I will try once again. Please provide empirical evidence of the president buying unions and teachers for their votes.

As to the “free phone” garbage, it has been pointed out many times that this program goes back to long before Obama was in office and the purpose was to provide extremely low-income people with a way to be contacted for jobs, health care appointments and school contact, etc.

And to say that liberals are not concerned about the safety of children is just a purely ignorant statement.

Robert
Good letter but you gotta know that the left is not interested in protecting the kids.
I too am an advocate of having armed guards at schools but that is to simple for some and would cost way to much money...but they sure don't want obama to stop his spending on unions, teachers, free phones and the rest of the stuff he bought his election with.
In the mean time shootings by some left wing idiot will continue and nothing will be done.
We once had a good country but like Rush Say's....I too am ashamed of our country!

"I am very strongly in favor of armed guards as a result of my school experience."

Good, now where do the funds come from to fund these armed guards. Oh, BTW, I should mention that in all of my years of K-12 education (1948/1961) in both California and Arizona we never had an armed guard at any school
