Column: So Jason Collins is (yawn) gay, eh?

Rich Thurlow
Editor

Would someone please offer a coherent explanation of why we should care that Jason Collins is gay?

Collins has been a professional basketball player for over a decade. I'll concede the point that he's obviously pretty good. You have to be to make an NBA roster. But being pretty good sometimes only amounts to two or three minutes on the court every game because, by many accounts, Collins was the worst pretty good player on the Washington Wizards before their season ended without a trip to the playoffs.

In other words, a lot of casual NBA fans probably had no clue who Collins was before he made his announcement on the Sports Illustrated website. Since that time, though, Collins has been a media sensation. The president and first lady are standing with Collins and there's all kinds of chatter about how "brave" he is.

I'll withhold judgment on his bravery until I find out who he's having sex with (shudder). Since everything else about his private life has been thrust at us, so to speak, that information can't be far behind.

Meanwhile, on one of those sports talk shows devoted to looking at a topic from all angles, Chris Broussard found out there's one less angle from which to look at this particular topic. Broussard counts himself among those Christians who think homosexuality is a sin, and he said so.

Poor career move, Chris. You may not go to hell for what you're saying, but you'll certainly end up in TV purgatory if you insist on getting all religious on us. Those people who pride themselves on being tolerant - the MoveOn crowd among them - are petitioning to get Broussard thrown out on the street or, barring that, at least suspended.

I've got my own theory on this frenzy and it comes from years of working in newsrooms. This talk about Collins being brave and showing a lot of courage is based on the belief that conservative Americans will rise up and demand ... well, I don't know. But these conservatives will do something to show they are outraged.

I've had this explained to me by reporters on other issues. They don't know how to respond when they learn that, 1. I'm conservative, and; 2. I don't believe what they just said I believe.

That's what's at play here. The media is going crazy and much of America is defying expectations and yawning. The vast majority of us aren't homophobes, just as the vast majority of us aren't racists.

Jason Collins isn't brave. He's a marginal NBA player who happens to be gay. And I'm thinking he just milked another year or two out of his marginal career by coming out.

anson, someone who murders a child isnt a christian for one. and again, why dont you say anything about muslims killing children every day? lets not be biased to prove some point of yours. and your little, "whos killing children?" bit is seriously tired. if you want to have an educated debate on something, dont act so sarcastic, its foolish. even a "kid" can see that

You’ve tried that meme before and failed, but go ahead and we’ll start all over again. But please, no David Barton lies, okay?

Ms Athens you attempted to do just that last year and the year before that and the year before that and were proven incorrect every time. So, please, stop embarrassing yourself with your nonsense taken from David Barton’s books of lies.

We are NOT now, nor have we ever been a “Christian nation.” Period.

He's gay..so what? Who cares? Maybe his teammates, if they are homophobes. Doesn't affect me in any way and I don't care about basketball anyway.

Anyone who thinks there aren't gay players in Pro baseball, football, basketball and almost any other sport is living in a fantasy world. Let's throw in police, firefighters, doctors, nurses and any other profession you can think of. Who cares!? If they can do their jobs...that's all I care about.

“What should a woman get for aborting her unborn child? Let's just say, if we made it against the law to kill your own child, we can bet a lot of girls would stop having babies they could not care for or that interrupted their college plans.”

So despite all of your rants about something that is none of your business and has no effect on you, you cannot answer the question. Curious.

“We need God back in our country and morals.”

Whose God? Yours? From the venomous posts you make here day in and day out I think I – and many others – would pass on your God.

“Why kill the child for their sin?”

Whoa – who is killing children? Oh wait, I almost forgot, that would be the good Christian couple from Pennsylvania who – so far – have killed two of their children based on religious claptrap. How come you never rant on about those two? Oh wait, I forgot they are Christians.

“How about killing the guy that got the girl pregnant? Oh wait, that would be murder too.”

Actually if there were a law demanding such punishment it would not be murder. I suggest you begin a petition.

“How about if you get a girl pregnant you aren't married to, you go to jail for six months?”

Okay, once again you need to get that petition started.

“… we now have NO MORALS because we kicked God out of this Christian country.”

First, we are not a “Christian country” and you know it and second I see God present throughout our nation.

Bob Moore:

I posted a couple of other things before the one you refer to but they didn't print them leading up to that one. I must have said a bad word. It did happen. Usually in Catholic churches however.

There is an even worse one with video and this time by muslims against Christians. Think I will blog that one.

What should a woman get for aborting her unborn child? Let's just say, if we made it against the law to kill your own child, we can bet a lot of girls would stop having babies they could not care for or that interrupted their college plans.

It is a difficult question because, having picketed for a long time, I know girls that were told it wasn't a baby, just a nothing blob, could not feel pain, etc. In that case they are innocents lied to by the abortion mill.

You know what we really need. We need God back in our country and morals. Then young people would not be sleeping around and would understand killing an innocent unborn is murder.

You at least do see the two people involved are the reason there is a pregnancy? Why kill the child for their sin? How about killing the guy that got the girl pregnant? Oh wait, that would be murder too. How about if you get a girl pregnant you aren't married to, you go to jail for six months?

Again, bottom line. MORALS, we now have NO MORALS because we kicked God out of this Christian country. He IS the answer to it all.

Gosh, do you think that’s because it never happened? Just more hyperbolic nonsense from that odd group of people who are obsessed with what others do with the genitals.

“Let's talk hatred Bob Moore.”

Uhh, let’s not. You do more than enough for everyone, so just count me out.

While you’re here is there any time that you are going to address the punishment you would impose on a woman fro having an abortion? I have asked at least 25 times and although you can pontificate to no end on everything under the sun you have never answered that question. Why not?

Is is "throwing it in people's faces" when heterosexuals talk about their spouses/partners? Does anyone accuse the editor of "thrusting his personal life at us" when his wife blogs on this site? Of course not. But when a homosexual wants to share that same extension of their life, it's looked upon with scorn, or described as "dumb and sick." I won't even comment on the first sentence of the fourth paragraph.

Mr. Collins coming out was brave considering the machismo surrounding sports. Evidently that point was lost on many of you, but I am amazed how several of you were able to effortlessly connect this story to Obama, the MoveOn crowd and "trying to justify stealing from others who are actually productive."

I wish this newspaper, instead of its endless political divisiveness, would focus on the community and issues affecting Kingman. Why isn't the City Council addressing the golf course issue when so many residents are demanding it? What's going on with this new Board of Supervisors that isn't on the meeting agenda? Why on earth are we paying to widen Airway behind Walgreens? Where's the "brave" reporting on those issues?

Instead we get columns like this one that serve no purpose, except to let us know that Mr. Thurlow was so unbothered by a basketball player coming out that he had to write about it two weeks after the initial story broke.

While these sorts of columns and letters to the editor drive up comment counts from the regulars here, it drives away readers who are fed up with what the Miner has become.

It is always entertaining to watch Frankie show up here and make atheist comments about me. He does that because he knows me so very well. Oh, wait, Frankie has never met me and does not know me, but for some mystifying reason he feels he has the right to come here and post utter nonsense about me. But we’re used to Frankie going “all atheist” when someone says something he does not agree with.

For Bravery Thurlow Will Never Understand:

Homosexuals Disrupt church service by Deacon Keith Fournier 11-12-08

Using megaphones for amplification they shouted epithets at those entering the service such as “Jesus is a homo”. also mockingly carried an upside down pink cross.

Bash Back referred to Mt. Hope Church as “a deplorable anti-queer mega church.”
(because they followed the tenants of their faith apparently?)
.
LANSING, Michigan - Dr. Dave Williams is Pastor of a large evangelical church in Lansing..has served there 25 years leading them from 226 to 4000 - respected in the Christian and civic community - has extensive outreaches.

Last Sunday during worship, loud and intentionally disruptive homosexual activists stood outside in strange pink attire using megaphones - they shouted out "Jesus is a homo" to those entering

Others dressed normally, entered and sat down w/the congregation. Then, orchestrated, they jumped up and pulled the fire alarms, distributed anti Christian literature, then stormed the Pastor's pulpit waving a rainbow colored flag and shouting "it's Okay to be Gay! Bash Back. They also destroyed property.

NOT ONE PERSON WAS ARRESTED. NO NEWS OUTLETS CARRIED THE STORY EXCEPT CHRISTIAN PUBLICATIONS.

Let's talk hatred Bob Moore. Want more stories For Bravery? This is NOT an isolated incident and it was not in the Sudan. It was in LANSING, MICHIGAN. I can only imagine the news stories if a bunch of Christians did the same to a group of gays meeting. Instead we refer people to God's word in Romans and are slaughtered for even that.

And PS - they want liberation? They HAVE liberation. It is the Christian churches being denied the right to follow their own tenants - like on conception? Or did you miss that one too?

And bravery? It's what the whistleblowers will do this Wednesday.

Rich, you are correct. The sad part really is that our President would act so un-presidential and even get mixed up with this. Why does he have to call Mr. Collins and congratulate him? The President in a roundabout way is condoning . . . wait for it . . . unscrupulous behavior towards WOMEN! Collins misled his fiancé for years without any regards for her. So for you Rich to comment: "I'll withhold judgment on his bravery until I find out who he's having sex with" is ironic don't you think? Collins is not brave. He is nothing more than a charlatan, who abused a woman both mentally and physically (she has admitted to intimacy). But since he is a public figure, many think he is brave. HA! These people such as the President, who congratulate Collins for bravery, need to go back to remedial school for human decency.

Don't you know that it is popular right now for every leftist to come out of the closet? I believe everyone in Hollyweird has, now it is spreading to the NBA and other sports and I'm just waiting for the ones who write in to start bragging about being gay.
I will bet their Mom's and Dads are proud!

Article comment by: Bravery Thurlow Will Never Understand

Once again our dear editor fails to understand of what he speaks.

If he were gay and had experienced the hatred and denigration experience by gays, he would understand how brave an act it is. Perhaps he could understand the degree of bravery it is, since Collins has probably destroyed any possibility of a promising financial life in sports which depends mostly on product endorsements.

Now we have to be kind to Rich since he has never experienced marginalization and hatred by being who he is. He'll never understand the feeling of sitting quietly at a sporting event while one's high school buddies call a player gay to express hatred or wondering how those same guys would react to him, if they knew. He'll never understand the desperation young gays experience that brings them to suicide (rates 3 times that of straights).

So instead of praising a significant act in changing America, the editor demonstrates why he will never be able to put himself in someone else's shoes. Perhaps he's just not courageous enough.

@ Rich

And I'm thinking he just milked another year or two out of his marginal career by coming out.

I seldom agree with anything you say but this time I think you nailed it. By coming out it has put the team owners in a precarious situation. If he gets dropped from his team, "it's discrimination". If he doesn't get picked up by a team, "again it's discrimination". I'm pretty sure he knew precisely what he was doing. Either way he is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.

Well, you just proved the media's point, by showing your homophobia for all to see. In one article, you said (a) he is a sinner, (b) he is a marginal player and (c) he came out dishonestly in order to get a couple more years of playing time. Three swipes against him in one article. So you proved that you are indeed a homophobe. Thanks for proving the liberal point!

I,for one, am highly offended at the use of the term gay to describe a homosexual. Gay, in the English language, has traditionally meant simply happy. Gay was also a woman's name. I agree with Rich. So what. The dude sleeps with someone of the same sex. Why do I care. I am sick and tired of having homosexuality shoved into every corner of the society as if it were some life sustaining panacea worthy of knowledge and worship. Maybe they are happy. iI couldn't care less. But stop with the hero worship already.
