Column: Benghazi media curiosity? Really?

Rich Thurlow
Editor

Let us harken back to those glorious days of 2008, when presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were debating who would be better prepared to respond to a crisis when the phone rang at 2 a.m.

It turns out that "C. None of the Above" was the correct answer, with the events of Sept. 11, 2012, providing the final bit of evidence.

And now something funny is happening. But not "ha ha" funny as far as the White House is concerned.

I was home the day of the latest Benghazi hearing, lending an ear to the proceedings while concentrating on the more immediate task of being Best Grandpa Ever for Alex. My bride, kdminer.com blogger Roxanne, was closely monitoring the events, flipping from Fox News to CNN to MSNBC. Fox News, which leaves the other two cable news networks in the ratings dust, was covering the hearings. The other two weren't.

For Fox viewers, the hearings provided little new "news," since that network had been aggressively covering all angles of the Benghazi story from Day 1. I'm familiar enough with MSNBC to know its coverage of Benghazi pretty much began and ended with White House talking points. CNN? I think more people get their news from Jon Stewart.

As we have grown to expect, the Associated Press's coverage was of the "nothing to see here" variety. The AP coverage in Friday's Miner focused on Republicans looking for political gain by trying to make what happened a scandal. This from the same news agency that ran U.S. death tolls in Afghanistan in every story from that country - until Obama took office.

I think readers will have a better idea of what it going on as it regards Benghazi by reading Linda Athens' blogs at kdminer.com (Random Thoughts of an Unabashed America Lover) rather than the fluff thrown out by the AP.

I had pretty much resigned myself to much of the mainstream media repeating the line that this is not news, despite the fact it's beyond dispute that the president and the secretary of state lied to the American people repeatedly in the two weeks after the terrorist attack on Benghazi embassy. This tall tale of a video inciting a deadly riot is pure bull.

Aside from the lies, we also know two Americans did respond and others could have, but that they were ordered to stand down. Why?

And where was the president while all this was going on? Why is that a well-kept secret?

There's more to this seedy story of, at best, incompetent leadership (and possibly, as detailed by Athens in her blog, something far, far worse). The surprise, though, is that the lethargy and Obama worship that has gripped the networks and other major players in the mainstream media, has been replaced by a smidgen of curiosity.

Those news professionals were played for fools and some of them have enough pride left to resent it, to bite back. There's a hint of hostility in questions directed toward White House spokesmen.

I wonder how long that will last.

•••

Kingman and Golden Valley residents have been shaken by tragedies in recent days, accidents of the type that make people stop and think and say a prayer.

It was also an opportunity to act, and that's what so many in our community did Friday in a car wash for the Howell family. Husband/father Tony Howell lost wife Joy and sons Jesse and Justin in a car accident last Sunday in Nevada.

To help with expenses, the Cedar Hills 4-H club organized a car wash that was held at the Stockton Hill Road Taco Bell Friday. Rebekah Russell, who knows the Howell family through 4-H, helped organize the event. From 10 a.m. until just before 6 p.m., Russell said there were always two cars being washed with at least one other in line waiting.

Home Depot donated $100 for car wash supplies, Russell said, while some who went through the wash donated $100 to the family. All told, Russell said the fundraiser netted about $3,000.

This community has a big heart. Don't let detractors tell you otherwise.

“You tell the rest of us what happened at Benghazi.”

Unfortunately – unlike you – I cannot tell anyone what happened at Benghazi because I was not there. Somehow, however, you seem to be able to tell us all about it. How is that possible.

What I do know is that the information from the CIA and the Pentagon shows there was a tragedy that took place that – had the Republicans provided the requested funds for upgraded security – might have been avoided. But even that is tenuous at best.

As to the so-called whistle blowers you keep referring to it appears as if they are being less than truthful in their testimony and more of that proof is coming out each day.

What actually concerns me is your obsession with this one incident and yet have never said anything about the dozen attacks on our embassies and consulates that took place during the eight year Reign of Error of The Criminal, not to mention the thousands of Americans who died because of his ineptness. Why are you not demanding he be fully investigated and brought up on charges of War Crimes?

I will now ask that you explain why you are giving The Criminal a pass on his actions that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans?

Mother of Benghazi victim: Hillary and Susan Rice told me “nose to nose” that the Mohammed video was to blame
posted at 12:01 pm on May 9, 2013 (From HotAir)

This makes two parents of men killed in Benghazi who’ve claimed that Hillary told them personally that the video was the prime mover in the attack. Tyrone Woods’s father went a step further and alleged that she vowed to have the filmmaker “arrested and prosecuted” — which, courtesy of California authorities, is what ended up happening.

Why did she think it was some sort of comfort to the bereaved that the attack might have been motivated by the Mohammed movie? She went so far as to mention it in her remarks a few days afterward at the ceremony at Andrews AFB when the victims’ bodies arrived.

With their coffins right in front of her, she interrupted her praise for his service to note that “rage and violence” had been directed at American embassies “over an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with.”

State’s duty to protect its diplomats doesn’t dissolve depending upon whether an attack was foreseeable — which of course it was in the case of Benghazi, given the consulate’s repeated warnings about a growing jihadi presence in the city.

Her whole “3 a.m.” shtick in the 2008 campaign was that she was ready for responsibilities that Obama wasn’t prepared for, yet when a crisis finally landed in her lap here, she couldn’t move fast enough to pass the buck to some random American whose big sin was free speech that was “unhelpful” to the administration’s goals.

Please, do us the honor. You tell the rest of us what happened at Benghazi.

We await your expertize and crack investigating on what really happened. Apparently the rest of us have it wrong including those that were there. And that Democrat Whistleblower who twice voted for Obama. You know, the main one questioned named Hicks? He apparently didn't get it right either so please, get us straightened out here.

“Dear God, are you ever going to see the truth.”

I see the truth every single day as I post the facts to dispute the nonsense you post her. You are the one so blinded by hatred that you refuse to deal in anything but innuendo, supposition and outright lies.

“Obama told him they would get those responsible. So who have they gotten so far?”

Considering it took ten years to capture OBL (and didn’t The Criminal promise to make that his number one priority – oh wait, he gave up and left it to Obama) your whine about the capture of the Benghazi perpetrators is a little disingenuous.

And where are the perpetrators that attacked our embassies and consulates twelve times during the eight year Reign of Error of The Criminal – oh, that’s right he never attempted to find them

“One Father even said Obama couldn't look him in the eye but looked over his shoulder instead.”

Can’t find that quote – please provide.

“Want to dispute the parents Bob? They are lying too maybe?”

No, Ms Athens, I am disputing your comments, because I cannot find anywhere that what you claim actually took place.

“Then when people on the right tell the truth, they are called dirty names by you guys.”

No, when people on the right lie they are called liars – which is not a “dirty name” just a statement of fact. Don’t lie, don’t be called a liar – see how simple that is.

Oh, and mentioning lies I am still awaiting your promised response to the list I posted two days ago. When may I expect that answer?

>"The press covered up Benghazi long enough to get obama re-elected and Hillary out of office. They even put off investigations until after the election. Like any good communist country, if you can't get the truth out and have blackouts in the journalism department, not much you can do."

If you for one second believe the press is in control of an investigation into ANY thing that is borderline illegal, then you are truly naive and foolish.

Second, how about the fact that it is now coming out that the Repubs have been less than truthful about the "email chain" from the CIA.

Dear God, are you ever going to see the truth. The PARENTS of the dead in Benghazi said on TV they were told by Hillary and Obama BOTH while the caskets sat there that they were killed over the tape. Obama told him they would get those responsible. So who have they gotten so far? Why, the guy who made the tape noone heard of or watched. He is the ONLY one in jail. Good work obama. You should have been a detective.

One Father even said Obama couldn't look him in the eye but looked over his shoulder instead.

Want to dispute the parents Bob? They are lying too maybe?

Schmo: You, like Bob/Chuckles don't get it. The press covered up Benghazi long enough to get obama re-elected and Hillary out of office. They even put off investigations until after the election. Like any good communist country, if you can't get the truth out and have blackouts in the journalism department, not much you can do.

Then when people on the right tell the truth, they are called dirty names by you guys.

(Lack of) Common Sense.

“Interesting article! Accurate? Who knows?”

Discerning individuals know and understand the difference between an “opinion” piece and an “article.” The link you provided is an opinion piece, that much like the ranting of our MS Athens, based only on what the writer feels or thinks and not any actual facts.

So – “interesting”? Okay, but there is no actual “article” with hard, empirical facts in that “opinion” piece.

“I wrote a blog about Rhodes.”

No, you did not. You copied and pasted a lot of nonsense from some right wing website. Be truthful – for once, okay?

“I have heard there is going to be another big story coming out soon to distract more from Benghazi so stay tuned.”

So you have “heard?” I suppose that is supposed to mean anything. Actually what is a riot is how you have fallen for the rightie Kool-Aid about Benghazi and failed to see the garbage being done by the Republicans behind the scenes. But, that is typical.

“A couple of other stories I haven't seen hit the big news. 300,000 being furloughed at the DOD? Can that be true? Also the two bombers at the Boston Marathon who, it appears, killed three Jews on the prior 9-11? Where is that story?”

So two stories that you have NOT SEEN you are “reporting” on because ….?.

Prior to the 2012 elections, the so-called Benghazi scandal was thought to be the GOP's trump card to win back the White House. After failing to do that and not learning any lessons as to why they lost the election, Benghazi is now being used by the right to smear Hillary Clinton and hurt her chances in 2016 should she decide to run.

For anyone who thinks otherwise, why didn't the political right scream bloody murder when 54 diplomatic targets were attacked resulting in 13 Americans killed over the 8 years of the Bush administration? Where was the outrage on Faux News then? This is nothing but a political witch hunt and its shameful.

What exactly is "strick" surveilance?

“You mean whistleblowers like Mr. Hicks, the DEMOCRAT who wanted Clinton to be President, but in the end voted for obama twice.”

Yes and party affiliation means nothing when it comes to the disgruntled. And how do you know how Mr Hicks voted? Oh, wait, you don’t!

“Are you going to bad mouth the family members of the Benghazi dead who have said Hillary told them at the memorial service that the youtube video was the cause?”

Since Mrs Clinton did no such thing it would be difficult to do any such thing. You gotta stay away from those right wing shouting heads, Frankie, they lie – all of the time – about everything.

Good column, Rich. And, yes, Linda seems to have all the facts pretty straight on her blog.

Read somewhere that 30 of the Benghazi survivers are being held at Walter Reed, under strick "surveilance" that they NOT talk to anyone.

Did you read yesterday that WH Deputy Nat'l Security Advisor is Ben Rhodes, the brother of CBS Pres. David Rhodes. No wonder CBS is giving their top reporter, Sharyl Attkinson, a very hard time NOT to release her stories.

Because the President is under such "pressure" at this time, is that why he allowed the story of the IRS? Will there be another "false flag" horror story coming up soon to "distract" from Benghazi? If I remember right, the Clintons were famous for that kind of "distraction" tactic!

Seems the liberals are always the first to react to any conservative true story here. Wonder how they feel that one of the Whistleblowers voted twice for Obama in the elections. Seems he's seen "the light".

What? Politicians lied? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

So now Issa was on Meet the Press this morning telling the American people that Clinton and Obama lied. And Rand Paul says that Clinton is not fit to hold public office.

Please, our political leaders, maybe with the exception of Washington, in this country have been lying from the get go. So that would be about 237 years that the American people have been lied to.

Recently we had George Bush lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq for the purpose of starting a useless but very costly war. And Dick Cheney was there the whole time whispering in his ear. And what about their aides, advisors, and staff. Rand Paul never said those people were unfit to hold public office.

What? Political hypocrisy? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you to see that Rand Paul is a hypocrit.

Mr. Thurlow, thank you sir for the revelation of your bias when it comes to the news. I'm sure we can count on your journalist integrity not to be overruled by your rabid anti-Obama bias when editing the news contained in our wonderful hometown newspaper. A great example of your fair and balanced opinion can be found in your statement that FOX news had " aggressively covered the Benghazi story from all angles since day 1." I would like to support that fair and balanced assessment by directing your readers to google 'islamic protests cairo sept 11 2012, which also mentions Benghazi. The story submission by nation.foxnews is particularly interesting in that it verifies the story presented by the administration. The headline is "muslims attack US Embassy, burn American flag, scale US Embassy wall in Cairo" in that Fox news story reported on sept 11 2012 are the two points that expose the republican congressional panel for what they really are, a political lynch mob. Point 1: the Fox news story makes the following statement "to protest a video attacking Islams prophet muhammed. Hundreds of protesters marched to the embassy and gathered outside its walls chanting against the movie which was produced in the US. The ambassador must leave!" The crowd chanted. The ambassador was out of town. Point 2: Fox news goes on to report, " In Benghazi a large mob stormed the consulate with gunman firing weapons and rocket-propelled grenades"...overpowering the 4 libyan guards and killing 4 americans. Thank you Fox news for verfying the attacks were a direct result of the video and the libyan crowd was armed because they had just fought a war to depose Ghadafi, saw they outnumbered the guards, and took their anger out on the americans. Sir, people like you who claim to love truth but really don't are one reason I am ex GOP

This paper has a sad state of affairs for editorial competence, they allow far right Looney tunes carte blanche ability to post comments, post letters to editor purporting to have proof of Obama is a illegal Kenyan alien, some how is working in secret with terrorists to destroy America and it all was plotted 50 some odd years ago while in his mothers womb! Now Benghazi I know is like the last possible straw for the angry folks who lost the last two presidential elections and fear a non-white person in white house is the end of their America, but sadly they forget many facts such as this fellow they hate so much did what their messiah Bush Jr could not do, he got Bin Laden on his watch, and the best they can do is try and lie and say Bush Jr did it!

“I think readers will have a better idea of what it going on as it regards Benghazi by reading Linda Athens' blogs…”

Since Ms Athens has a extremely long history of posting hyperbolic nonsense it would serve readers better to actually search our news stories from various sources and compare the reporting – like the right wing hate fest that is FAUX News (the only “news” outlet to ever go to court and demand the right to lie about, make up and distort the news).

Ms Athens has failed to “report” anything that actually borders on fact based materials as released by the CIA and the Pentagon, instead choosing to only post the bitter diatribes of so-called “whistle-blowers.”

The most telling facts are the following - Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other military leaders said there wasn't enough time for the military to respond as the events in Benghazi occurred too quickly, a point reinforced by the Pentagon, "The fact of the matter remains, as we have repeatedly indicated, that U.S. military forces could not have arrived in time to mount a rescue of those Americans who were killed and injured that night," said Pentagon spokesman George Little. After word of the attack in Benghazi, a seven-member security team flew from Tripoli to Benghazi. Upon arrival, they learned that Stevens was missing and the situation had calmed after the first attack.

“There's more to this seedy story of, at best, incompetent leadership (and possibly, as detailed by Athens in her blog, something far, far worse).”

The discerning reader knows that Ms Athens has a horrible track record when it comes to truthfulness (and a list of outright falsehoods can be provided) so for Thurlow to guide anyone to her hyperbolic rants is a distinct disservice to the community.
