Guest column: Soon we'll be saying, 'Freedoms? What freedoms?'
Sandee Samoska
Kingman resident

I was waiting in line at the pharmacy the other day and heard a woman say, "America's more free now than in the past." I would just like to know which planet she has been living on for the past few years?

We have countless numbers of people on welfare now as well as record numbers on food stamps. Those people have everything controlled by the government and most don't even realize it.

The NSA is tracking our phone calls and emails. How much of our mail is being opened and read? There are cameras everywhere in our bigger cities. These are for "security." They also see who goes to what doctor, what bar, what church, etc.

The IRS can persecute anyone they want and nothing is done about it.

The EPA can take your land/your home and unless you have a lot of money to fight them with, you lose.

I have two friends here in Kingman who live on opposite sides of town. Both have received letters from UniSource advising them that they have the highest electric bills on their respective blocks and if they do not lower their usage they will be charged at a higher usage rate than their neighbors. UniSource can do this because the Obama administration says everyone must be equal and has made it possible for all electric companies to charge anyone using more than his neighbors a higher rate without having to go to the Utilities Commission for permission.

ObamaCare is taking over our medical treatment. Already people I know who are over 75 have been told Medicare will not pay for this or that test that their doctor feels is critical. Many have been told they can no longer have certain medications even though they are generic. We have been forced to pay into Medicare and Social Security over our entire working lives with the promise that these things (paid for by us and our employers) will be there for us when we turn 65, yet are now being told this money is running out. The reason it's running out is politicians diverted it in the past with the promise to pay it back (which never happened) and now wish to divert more for the care and well-being of illegal aliens and other ineligible groups.

Many of you have laughed at the idea of "Death Panels," yet many over 75 are now being told they cannot have this care/treatment or this medication as they are too old. I know this for a fact!

What about the current declarations from our government about which public lands you can no longer use, or bans on building a home next to what they declare as a "waterway"? What about the government's persecution of Christians or the Catholic hospitals and schools (what else would you call it if you are told you must do something against your religious convictions?).

The lady also talked about gun laws. She felt no one should have the right to defend themselves, even against an intruder. She said, "If you were meant to live there would not have been an intruder and that even though you could lose your life if you did nothing, you have no right to use a gun in self-defense."

I fail to see the logic in her statement. The Second Amendment gives us the right to defend ourselves, but who pays attention to our Constitution these days? Certainly not our president!

The lady also stated that "we enjoy freedoms today that would've been unfathomable to prior generations." Our growing lack of freedoms would have been not only unfathomable to prior generations, they would not been tolerated. The longer we, the people of this great country, allow the creeping loss of our freedoms, the sooner we will wake up and find we have none.

Great letter as usual Sandee.

The lady in line thinking we have more freedoms is obviously one of the people who probably helped vote in "compassionate" liberals, you know those people who love us all so much, they know exactly what we need.

And they all know we don't need oil field jobs.

Like the Kennedy's for instance. Always on the people's side, what they are known for. Right?

And it was just revealed that Caroline Kennedy, up for Japanese Ambassador has been forced to reveal her wealth and it is a cool $500 million dollars.

And guess what part of it is from. Yep, oil interests along with other Kennedy family members. Apparently it is okay for the extended Kennedy's to sit back and reap the benefits of oil investments but NOT okay for hard working Americans to work in new oil fields on government lands.

Carolyn is college educated, wealthy beyond belief, can't string a sentence together.

@the Fox Hound: Dang! Your ability to "sniff out" the facts reminds me of Wrong Way Corrigan! The difference between yours and honest people analyzing the facts is as broad as the Grand Canyon.

Conservatives DO blame Bush for the trampling of our freedoms, while you continue defending the complete smothering and destruction of our Constitutional and God-given rights. It's incredible that you can ignore all the information that has come out recently and simply say, "It's Bush's fault!"

I don't expect you to be honest, and thus have a shred of credibility... That requires too much soul-searching instead of drinking the Kool-Aid and smoking the bud.

I think one see's a lot of whining on line, on the phone lines to the radio talk shows etc., many complaining about freedoms lost etc., but in the bygone era they are dreaming of coming back we had lynch mobs hang folks for such things as looking at a white woman, guilty by association, or public belief with no real evidence in law merely a opinion! I think many pine for them good ole days without truly understanding how bad sometimes them old days were before modern medicine, legal system flawed as it might be when injustice, and incurable illnesses were the common place thing of the day then1

@ Just a Thought

"I am only guessing that you are a Harvard graduate of Constitutional Law as you speak of the Second Amendment"

The real problem with America is that we are letting Harvard Constitutional law graduates define our inalienable rights, such as the right to self defense. That is exactly how our freedoms are being curtailed.

Additionally, the religious hospitals that you complained about are private businesses. They don't take federal dollars, so they are not required to treat people who cannot pay. I wouldn't expect to walk into a grocery store to be given free merchandise if I didn't have money. Private hospitals are the same way.

The reason that county hospitals and certain private hospitals treat people who can't pay is because they take federal money. They can't turn anyone away, for any reason. even if the patient comes in for a condition that doesn't require hospital level care, such as a runny nose. Many of these same hospitals are going out of business because of having to provide free treatment.

Sandee, I have to agree with Al Koffman. Exactly what freedoms have you lost?

"The reason it's running out is politicians diverted it in the past with the promise to pay it back (which never happened) "

By politicians I suspect you mean "Bush"! He is the one who diverted it to finance the two illegal and lie filled wars in the name of a threat of WND's that did not exist,

Al Koffman
You lost the freedom to own land, you have to get permission from the government to do about everything. When you were young you did not have to ask permission to do many things. The constitution today is about destroyed. In fact it is now a felony to protest any where there is a secret service agent.
Reporters are now being arrested for doing their job.
99% of the federal government today is unconstitutional,
The can now jail you or kill you without a trial. They can take all you own and put you in a work camp without a trial. The executive Orders give the government full ownership of everything including you. Obama now has the laws and force in place to become a dictator. We are in the same place as Germany was before Hitler became a dictator.

I agree with AL KOFFMAN. Also doesn't Sandee Samoska sound a lot like L.A. I am 88 and on Medicare and Social Security. never been refused any exams, treatments for heart issues, balloon and stent. People like her need to tell the truth once in a while.

Sandee, No one other than those who are paranoid, naïve, gullible, stupid, or wear a tin foil hat would believe any of this ridiculous crap. You bounced from subject to subject, but I would like you to answer two of them.

Freedom? I am now 83 and still haven’t figured out one freedom that I have lost. What freedom/s have you lost? Comparing those on food stamps and/or welfare to lost freedoms is incomprehensible.

Medicare? As you should be able to recognize, I have been on Medicare for 18+ years. Thanks to Medicare I have survived two bouts of colon cancer. I have had many colonoscopies, cat scans, Pet scan, and six surgeries. I have NEVER had a test or surgery for cancer or any other problem denied or even questioned. Now, these are personal facts that I don’t mind sharing. You allude to “many over 75 being denied care/treatment or medications as they are too old. I know this for a fact? “ So, why don’t you share these facts if you expect to have any credibility?

Re: Death panels

Former obama "car czar" Steven Rattner stated in a opinion piece for the NY Times wrote: "We need death panels" He then clarified it by saying: "unless we start allocating health care resources more prudently — rationing, by its proper name — the exploding cost of Medicare will swamp the federal budget."

Howard Dean: "By setting doctor reimbursement rates for Medicare and determining which procedures and drugs will be covered and at what price, the IPAB will be able to stop certain treatments its members do not favor by simply setting rates to levels where no doctor or hospital will perform them,”

If well known democrats believe it will be a reality, you know it will.

Article comment by: where's Mel Gibson when you need him .....?

Then there's the IRS - deposit or spend at least $3,000 and be required to tell them all about it (and no space here for all their "inquisitive" tax forms). Yeah, we got all kinds of freedom. Recently when I got pulled over by police because a two-dollar rear brake light had burned out, it led to a full warrant check and demand to know my current address. As Mel Gibson said in "Braveheart" - Freeeeeeedom!!! I would suggest that all American law enforcement wear Nazi uniforms, but that would be an insult to the Nazis. Itr's kind of a tossup now for worst Government offence - when they break into your home surreptitiously after you were outspoken about their crimes? How about the current Imposter-in-chief's support for the Muslim Brotherhood and their anti-Christian rampages this past week in Egypt?

You sound like you are on Social Security and Medicare. It also sounds as you watch way to much Fox news. I am only guessing that you are a Harvard graduate of Constitutional Law as you speak of the Second Amendment. Now for your friend that find Medicare will not pay for test and medical treatments. So you say that the free market medical is the best solution. I don't thinks so. Yes they may pay when you get cancer but will not pay for medical treatment to prevent it. This is because preventative care does not make them money. Your article is to long and fragmented to comment on all you unsubstantiated ramblings. The Christian and Catholic hospitals you speak of make money for these religions under the vale of non-profits. They will not treat any patients that can not pay and force all indigents to County and State run facilities. They are for profit and must be treated like any other profit center. In closing your narrow views are what is wrong with America.

Hint: ObamaCare has not been implemented yet. Nice try though, keep riding that right wing bandwagon though.

Yes. Exactly. My family was on food stamps until about 3 months ago. I hated it. I worked hard to dig us out of that hole. It was HARD. Work full time. School full time. Those programs helped, but they are very hard to get off of. I treasure the freedom to protect my home and family. That lady might too if she had a creep trying to peep in on her children, and breaking on to her yard. Yet the danger of losing that right is very real if attitudes are changing like that.

Maybe this lady, you speak of, said "America's more free now than in the past.", meaning "free stuff"! Many on the left, equate freedom with how much "free stuff" the govt. doles out. They just can't understand that each "free stuff" they get, takes a measure of freedom away from each of us!

Article comment by: THE TEA PARTY IS ON KOCH

Sandee: You might want to go in a cave and hide until the tea party takes over the government in 2016. Then it is certain there will be better times. We will have an abundance of private jobs at 4-5 dollars an hour. We'll be able to get rid of those high paid union police and fire fighters. We will get rid of all government jobs and just trust the fat cats to bring all their money back from the Caymans and Switzerland where they have been hiding it. I am sure they would like to invest in America again, right?

Gee Sandy maybe the next time your standing in line at the market you might want to mind your own business because your letter is full of inaccuracies. I get the feeling that you only hear what you want to hear. The NSA was given their power during the Bush admin. Obama just went along with it. Probably because he didn't want to be called a traitor by the rightwing. The EPA can't take your land away from you unless of course what your doing to the land is affecting your neighbors health and welfare. Just because you believe in the invisible guy in the sky doesn't mean that you can deprive a worker of her healthcare rights like the Catholic Church does. And as far as gun laws you couldn't be more wrong. Under Obama the right to carry a gun has been extended to being able to carry almost everywhere even in bars. I'll bet that you even carry when your at church. So relax Sandy and quit watching so much Rush and Fox you'll sleep a lot better.
