Business in Dolan Springs serves prospectors

There is still gold in these hills and prospectors continue to search for and mine gold in Mohave County.

Sandy's Detectors in Dolan Springs is a new business opened to serve novice and experienced prospectors.

"Dolan Springs is near the accessible gold fields on public lands in northwest Mohave County," Sandy Burton, owner of the business, said.

"We are half way between the prospecting supply stores in Lake Havasu City and North Las Vegas."

Dolan Springs is on the way to a popular gold mining area between U.S.

Highway 93 and Meadview.

Stockton Hill Road and Antares Road provide access to the same area north of Kingman and Route 66.

Burton said the area is popular with prospectors and casual miners because much of the public land is open to the miners.

Prospecting is a popular passtime with snowbirds and area residents.

"As many as 400 snowbirds will park RVs on (Bureau of Land Management) sites in the Gold Basin area," she said.

"They can stay for short periods and then move 25 miles to another site."

Maps on the store walls show general locations of known gold deposits in Mohave County and areas from Oregon to Mexico.

Burton sells metal detectors, dry wash equipment and a wide variety of small tools used by casual miners.

"One of the advantages of my Dolan Springs location is the space to demonstrate equipment," Burton said.

"Just a little ways from the store where there is no electrical disturbance, I can show people how to use the detectors."

Metal detectors identify gold as small nuggets in the ground.

She said the gold is usually encased in dirt and not visible until it is cleaned.

Old mining camps and abandoned town sites produce all kinds of metal objects left by earlier miners and residents.

Education is an extra service Burton provides.

She has been looking for gold since her father took her to pan gold at Knott's Berry Farm when she was a child.

"I would take my gold panning equipment and go along when he went hunting or fishing," she said.

"Now, my husband Michael mines with me on his time off from the fire department."

Burton is president of the Gold Seekers of Southern Nevada, a group of 400 that meets in Las Vegas.

She said Kingman and Lake Havasu City have local organizations.

The Lost Dutchman's Mining Association is a national organization of persons interested in mining.

Burton said more than 35,000 casual miners are active through the LDMA.
