Golden Valley fun day to raise money for library

A Golden Valley business has helped a volunteer group plan a fund-raising event for a county library branch.

Friends of the Golden Valley Library and The Stockmen's Bank branch will be hosts for a family fun day May 3.

"Stockmen's Bank has a fund-raiser every year," friends of the library president Yvonne Meredith said.

"We're pleased that they choose us this year."

The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m.

in bank parking lot at 4263 Highway 68.

Activities will includes karaoke music, game booths, a dunk tank, a cakewalk and drawing for prizes, and there will be lots of food, Meredith said.

Tickets for prizes can be picked up at The Stockmen's Bank or other area merchants.

Prizes include a two-night stay at a Laughlin hotel, a microwave oven and homemade crafts, Gina Hanks of The Stockmen's Bank said.

Hanks said the goal of the fund-raiser is to raise about $5,000.

The Mohave County supervisors recently voted to include a Golden Valley branch in the library budget for 2003-2004.

The goal is to open a branch by 2004 or 2005.

It is expected to cost $98,000 for a part-time staff, computers, book shelves and furniture.

Annual operations would cost about $30,000.

The county is negotiating with the Bureau of Land Management to lease 2.5 acres of next to the Golden Valley Chamber of Commerce on North Verde Road.

The building itself will cost about $14,500.

The metal building is 34 feet by 64 feet and 18 feet high and would be brought from Canada.

The idea for a satellite library was developed in 1998 when about a dozen women formed The Friends of the Golden Valley Library after a town hall meeting.

Volunteers of the non-profit organization have raised $14,837.

Mohave County has other satellite libraries is Meadview, Golden Shore, Dolan Springs, Chloride and Valle Vista.

The 90-plus members of the Friends of the Golden Valley Library have published cookbooks and a children's calendar and have had other fund-raisers.

Friends of the Golden Valley Library meet every fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

at the chamber of commerce.

Dues are $5 a year.
