Kingman High School's girls' tennis team squared off against Deer Valley Saturday and lost 7-2.
The Bulldogs were without their No.
2 player Tarisha Patel who is out of the country on a school trip.
The absence of Patel forced Kingman to do some line-up juggling and it may have thrown the team off its game.
"I could tell as soon as they walked on the court, they were nervous," coach Kasie Juelfs said.
"There was a lot of pressure.
They felt like they had to win because we switched the line-up.
But everybody was a little sluggish.
Our nerves got the better of us."
Kiersten Abraham played the No.
1 spot, her first varsity appearance this season, while Maryn Brannies slid down to the No.
2 position to take Patel's spot.
Brannies notched one of Kingman's victories, beating Danielle Biers 6-0, 6-4.
Stephanie Chan got the Bulldogs' other victory at the No.
She defeated Allie Caylor 6-3, 6-2.
"Maryn and Stephanie played wonderful," Juelfs said.
"They kept their composure.
It was good to see that under pressure, they didn't crack."
Kingman was unable to win a doubles match, but two teams were able to attempt comebacks.
Brannies and Claire Heinitz went down 5-0 to start off their match.
But they came back to tie it at 8, before falling 10-8.
Chan and Sapna Patel also started to rally, coming back to tie their match at 8 before falling by the same score.
Juelfs thinks this loss may be what Kingman needs to get its game back on track.
"All around, we didn't play too well," Juelfs said.
"But we'll be okay.
If anything, I think it lit a little fire under them.
We were too confident after winning the past two years and dominating.
They realized they need to work a little harder."
The Bulldogs next game is March 25 at Lake Havasu.
