Boys & Girls Club wants to expand to valley

During the long summer months ahead Golden Valley youngsters could have fun at the Boys & Girls Club in Golden Valley if enough parents sign them up.

The club is not just a place kids go to keep out of trouble.

It is also a place where they can pursue their interests, broaden their viewpoints and nurture their talents, director Noreen Frisch said.

"We do a lot during the summer.

There is never a dull moment," she said.

Frisch is trying to get at least 20 parents to sign up their children for a Boys & Girls Club summer program at Eagle Academy.

Called "Summer Magic," it would be a variety of activities including arts and crafts, pizza parties, sports, indoor games, a reading club, kite flying, card playing and gardening.

Guest speakers, drama, friendship and fun also are on the agenda.

The club accepts all children, ages 6 to 18 as members.

An application must be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian and the annual $12 membership fee must be paid in advance.

The $12 membership fee would allow children to use the club in Kingman.

The Golden Valley summer program would run from 7:30 a.m.

to 5:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday.

Session 1 would begin June 2 and end June 27.

The cost is $88.

Session 2 would begin July 7 and end July 25 at a cost of $66.

The children would be supervised but would not need permission to leave.

When children arrive or leave is a matter between them and parents.

Frisch said if enough parents sign children up for the summer session, she will try to get a grant for continuing the programs at Eagle Academy during the school year.

Several volunteers have agreed to help with activities such as gardening and drama, she said.

Mary Stuart, the supervisor of student services at Eagle Academy, said she is excited about the new program at the school.

"Golden Valley really needs something like this," Stuart said.

"There isn't much for kids to do here during the summer."

Boys & Girls Club tried to start a program in Golden Valley once before.
