Kingman plays host to Ironwood, Peoria in track meet

Both the boys' and girls' teams finished ninth at Saturday's Buckeye Invitational.

Kingman competed at Ironwood last week along with Westview and Ironwood won the meet.

The Kingman High School track team hosts Ironwood and Peoria on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs will see two of the state's top runners at Wednesday's meet.

Jessica and Judith Onyepunuka of Peoria have been dominant throughout the state in their performances.

Jessica has been invited to try out for the U.S.

Olympic team and will compete for USC next year.

"It's going to be fun to watch that kind of speed," Kingman coach Bob York said.

The Bulldogs are coming off a strong performance at the Buckeye Invitational on Saturday, where both the boys' and girls' team finished ninth out of 25 teams.

"I can't be unhappy with it, but you always want to do better," York said.

The top performances came from the boys' and girls' 4x800 relay teams, which both finished first.

"Those were really good races," York said.

"They were some neat races to watch."

For the girls' team, Jennifer Lucero and Pam Erickson had the best individual performances.

Lucero finished third in the 300-meter hurdles and Erickson took third in the 3200.

Byzewski won the triple jump for the boys' team with a jump of 41-2 1/2 feet.

John Hicks finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 126-09 for Kingman.

"Ironwood also has some really good kids, so this should be a good meet," York said.

Wednesday's meet against Ironwood and Peoria will be at the KHS north campus field and begins at 3:30 p.m.
