22 illegal immigrants collared in Golden Valley

GOLDEN VALLEY – Sheriff's deputies and Department of Public Safety officers detained 22 illegal immigrants after stopping a van Tuesday afternoon.

A Mohave County Sheriff's detective discovered the aliens after stopping the van at milepost 17 on state Route 68 at 12:21 p.m.

because of expired registration, sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said.

DPS officers responded after the sheriff's detective placed a call for backup.

The "coyote," or aliens' transporter, fled about 300 yards into the desert before he was arrested, Carter said.

The remaining 21 Hispanic adults stayed in the van.

Sheriff's deputies transported the illegal immigrants to the Mohave County Jail for deportation by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Deputies suspect that all of the illegal immigrants are from Mexico.

None had proof of legal residency, Carter said.
