On Aug. 10, 2006, Dell Reon Harris of So Hi died and went to be with the Lord. He had been looking forward to this for many years, especially lately as his struggle with cancer worsened.
Dell was born in New Boston, Ill., on Feb. 4, 1927, to Dell Ransom and Grace Bethel Harris. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Chicago, where he lived until his early 20s.
In 1950, he joined the Air Force and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix. There he met Raydean Butler, and they were married in February 1952. Their first son, David, was born the following year at the base.
In 1955, the family moved to Kingman when Dell was hired to work for AT&T. It was in Kingman that the rest of his and Raydean's children were born. Dell worked 35 years as a communications technician for AT&T and retired in 1990.
In 1996, Dell's wife, Raydean, passed away. Dell thought he would never find such a special love again, but in 1998 he fell in love with and married Jeanne Chapman. He said recently that he had been "blessed beyond his expectations" with another loving wife.
Dell was a wonderful, loving husband, an affectionate, encouraging father, and a great example and teacher to his children and grandchildren. He was also a faithful, dependable and conscientious worker.
Dell's volunteer work at church was very important to him. Over the years he served as a caring deacon, a talented music minister and a gifted Sunday school teacher. He helped to build and support Manzanita Baptist Church and helped start both College Park Baptist Church and Golden Valley Baptist Church.
Dell was not depending on his goodness to get him to heaven. He was depending on God's grace and mercy. "For we are all justified freely by God's grace through Christ Jesus our Lord."
He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Ransom Harris and Max Harris; his only sister, Betty Anderson; his first wife, Raydean Harris; and a daughter, Nancy Harris.
Dell is survived by his wife, Jeanne Harris; and by his children: David Harris of Phoenix, Sharon Phelps of Glendale, Mike Harris of Kingman, Martha Harris of Kingman, and Paul Harris of Canton, Mich.; also by his step-children: Kandice Reed of Canyon Country, Calif., Kerry Dover of Piedmont, S.C., Michael Kane of Winterville, N.C., and Kathleen Fottrell of Kingman. His family includes 14 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many other cherished relatives.
Dell's funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, at Golden Valley Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home.
