Hearing set for juvenile being tried as an adult

KINGMAN - Mohave County Court Commissioner Lee Jantzen set a status hearing for a 14-year-old charged as an adult in the murder of a 60-year-old man in Golden Valley.

Jantzen set the hearing for 8:30 a.m. on July 16 before Mohave County Judge Steven F. Conn for Cody Jeremiah Robert Simons, of Golden Valley.

Daniel DeRienzo, the defense attorney for Simons, said he wants to address his request for a special investigator and child psychiatrist at the hearing.

Simons and Travis Lee Smith, 18, of Golden Valley, have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mark Samson Hall, armed robbery and theft of a means of transportation.

Smith is awaiting a new hearing date following a change of judge from Conn to Judge Robert R. Moon.

Smith's attorney requested the change after determining Conn's wife was one of Smith's teachers in junior high school.

The teenagers were arrested on a warrant by Bend, Ore., Police Department officers. The pair waived extradition and were brought to Mohave County.

MCSO deputies and detectives responded to a residence in the 300 block of Verde Road about 12:55 p.m. on May 5 following a call from Samson's son-in-law, who found him lying on the floor of his home in Golden Valley. Hall's 1995 red Ford Crown Victoria was found abandoned the day before by deputies off Hidden Valley Road near Interstate 40 and U.S. 93.

According to an autopsy performed on May 7, Hall died of a gunshot wound, possibly on May 4.
