A Golden Valley man wanted on a attempted first-degree murder of a Bullhead City police officer warrant was arrested Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday morning, Mohave County Sheriff's detectives received a tip of the possible whereabouts of Richard Eldon Benjamin, 39. He was sighted at a convenience store in Golden Valley.
Around 12:25 p.m., detectives and deputies responded to an area south of Highway 68. They then established a perimeter.
"A short time later, Benjamin was taken into custody after a brief chase where he ran into an open field near Bouse Road and Highway 68," MCSO Public Information Specialist Trish Carter said in a news release.
Benjamin was arrested and booked into Mohave County Jail on the attempted first-degree murder of law enforcement felony warrant issued by Mohave County Superior Court and on charges of unlawful flight from law enforcement, criminal damage and two counts of aggravated assault.
Benjamin was being sought by law enforcement for attempting to murder a BCPD officer on Sept. 2.
At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 2, a BCPD officer attempted to pull over a pick-up truck on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in the area of Highway 95 and Marina Boulevard.
"The suspect stopped his vehicle but reversed and slammed into the fully marked police patrol car," BCPD Public Information Officer Emily Montague said in a news release.
A vehicle pursuit ensued south on Miracle Mile.
"At one point, the suspect turned around and drove toward the police officer in an attempt to strike the patrol car for the second time," Montague said. "The suspect missed, lost control, slid off into a ravine and fled the area on foot."
Through investigation by Bullhead City detectives, Benjamin was identified as the suspect, and a felony warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Sept. 20, law enforcement received another tip that Benjamin was at a residence near Yucca. He allegedly fled into the desert area when he saw police, and darkness prevented a further search.
Benjamin's girlfriend, 38-year-old Barbara Ann Bauthues, was arrested for hindering prosecution at the residence. She is still at the Mohave County Jail.
